Kalamaki: A Hidden Paradise on Crete’s Southern Coast
Kalamaki is a small village, situated at the south coast of central Crete between Agia Galini and Matala, 67 kilometres south of Heraklion Town. As all villages of south Crete is sporadically populated.
Kalamaki is a picturesque unspoiled landscape on a very long sandy beach which is never overcrowded. The sunset on this side of the island is spectacular giving you a sense of serenity while watching the deserted island of Paximadia. Kalamaki is ideal for people who are interested in relaxing, away from massive tourism. Here you will have a taste of true Cretan hospitality and the locals will know you by your name. At the village of Kalamaki, you will find all the basic amenities for tourists, like small tavernas, coffee shops, sunbeds and umbrellas. The fresh fish is on the daily menu and you can enjoy all typical Cretan dishes, made with fresh ingredients. The Greek cuisine is famous for its small dishes called mezes, like Spanish tapas, which are placed in the middle ready for sharing.
You can reach Kalamaki through a well-developed road which ends in the village, making it easily accessible for families with children. There you can have your peace of mind, letting the children play on the beach, while you relax in the nearby tavernas and coffee shops. On the beach of Kalamaki during the summer months, you can sometimes observe Carretta-Carretta turtles, which lay their eggs in the warm sand on the beach. The central position of Kalamaki in southern Crete gives it the great advantage of offering quick and easy access to many tourist spots and archaeological sites, such as Matala, Kommos, Phaistos, Agia Galini and many other places. Kalamaki is built along the great beach of Messara Bay, the largest beach in southern Crete.
Kalamaki hasn’t got the nightlife of neighbouring Matala, but it is quite busy. It’s a place for young people and families who want to relax and enjoy swimming in the Libyan Sea, staring out at the Paximadi Islands. Nobody can feel crowded on the large beach of Kalamaki. It is a place of relaxation and tranquillity.

Discovering the Hidden Gem of Panormos, Crete
Panormo is an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing getaway and a traditional Cretan destination away from the nuisances of mass tourism and big tourist resorts. Panormo has become a hit with the travellers in the past few years thanks to its seer and wild beauty, the incredible Cretan landscape, the scenic village and the splendid coastline, which on the top of that are all easily accessible. In Panormo you can find two main beaches and a few smaller ones. Panormos formation is that of a natural harbour, thus the waters are almost always calm and serene. The beach in the harbour also houses an actual port, where local fishermen tie their boats. The beach itself is sandy and the water is transparent. It is also ideal for families with small kids, as it is shallow and almost never windy or wavy. Moreover, the beach is well-organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, showers, water sports and numerous establishments surrounding it offering accommodation and food. Moreover, on the east side, you can find a smaller unorganized sandy beach which is not frequented by swimmers and beach-goers. Panormo has its own rich historical heritage as it is believed that it is situated on the site of the ancient city Panormus. The existence of this ancient city is confirmed by the discovery of the basilica of St. Sophia 500 meters south-west of the village. The basilica is considered one of the most important early Christian establishments in Greece and it is the largest of its kind in western Crete. Moreover, Panormos is alternatively called Kastelli or Milopotamos because it was fortified by the Genoese who occupied it since 1206. However, the fort was captured by the Venetians a few years later. What remains of the fort of Milopotas is still visible by the harbour. Panormos is the perfect place for a relaxing family holiday and is an ideal base for travellers to explore western Crete. Moreover, it is a close getaway to nearby Rethymnon town.

Stalida, a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure
Stalida is a village that lies between Malia and Hersonissos on the north coast of Crete, 30 km from Heraklion airport. It is a lively resort, attracting tourists from many European countries. The heart of Stalis can be found in the 5km long coastal road, which is lined up with several kinds of shops and establishments. During sunset time, a walk along the beach is a 'must do' for all visitors. The beach itself stretches for several kilometres, up to the eastern part of Malia. Moreover, the beach is sandy and the waters are shallow making it ideal for younger visitors. Also, the beach diverges into two parts and is separated because of a short rocky cape in the middle. Stalis beach is very well organized and offers several amenities such as, sun loungers, umbrellas, lifeguards, beach volley courts, showers, beach bars, water sports, changing rooms and every other facility you might need. Stalis is also famous for its Cretan date palm plantation, which is one of the few in Heraklion prefecture. Stalida itself was named after the Greek verb 'stalizo' which means 'stop for resting' and that's Stalis main difference with Malia and Hersonissos and other similar resorts. There you can just unwind in one of the small family hotels and have some terrific long walks along the coast or simply sit in a coffee house and just watch the world go by. For adrenaline junkies and hiking enthusiasts, the Bulgarian trail that ascends all the way up to Mohos offers an excellent opportunity for a trek. The trail was named after some Bulgarian POVs from WW2 who were forced to build it. The total distance to Mohos is 5 km but the trail itself is strenuous, always on the incline and with no shade, thus making it a challenging hike. On the way, you will be able to cross a pedestrian bridge above the highway and a few kilometres away you will reach the monastery of the Virgin Mary. Once you reach Mohos you can enjoy a well-earned coffee in one of the local establishments on the main square. Alternatively, the Mohos trail can be done in reverse or descend through another Mohos trail towards Malia. The main difference of Stalida from Hersonissos and Malia is that this place is ideal for families. You will find peaceful small hotels where you can relax, have a walk and enjoy a terrific view of the bay of Hersonissos.

Agia Galini, a place of "Holy Peace" in South Crete
Agia Galini is a popular seaside resort, located 61 km southeast of Rethymno and 68 km southwest of Heraklion, about midway along the south coast of Crete. Agia Galini in Greek means “Holy Serenity” and that’s the description everyone will give to this place as it is very peaceful and the sea is always calm. Thousands of tourists spend their holidays in this place, enjoying the old harbour, the excellent beaches and the traditional village, which looks like time has never passed. In the past, Agia Galini was a small fishing village, but in the 60’s it saw large tourism development. The whole south of Crete became popular alongside hippies and naturists, enjoying the natural beauty at its fullness. Still, nowadays the area has a lot of fans who still visit the village every year. Agia Galini is a modern resort with all amenities provided to its visitors, but still maintaining its traditional character. You will find many options for your accommodation, restaurants, shops and entertainment. The village is built on the hill of a mountain and you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Libyan Sea. North of the village you will see the cliffs of the Cretan White Mountain, Psiloritis. West of Agia Galini you will find many beautiful rugged caves, which you can visit only by boat, but it will be worth your time. One of them is the famous Cave of Daedalus, the legendary craftsman of Greek Mythology and father of Icarus. They say that this cave was his workshop. You can also take a boat to the nearby beaches such as Preveli and St. George. Watching south of Agia Galini towards the Libyan Sea you will see two small islets, Paximadia, which you can visit by boat and swim in amazing beaches untouched by human hand. No one really knows the origin of the name Agia Galini, but the most popular story is about a Byzantine princess who was travelling to Jerusalem and her ship fell into a storm. She then started praying to the Virgin Mary, begging her to rescue them and swore to build a temple for her. Indeed, holy Mother heard her prayers and the ship managed to approach the small natural harbour of Agia Galini which is never wavy. The small princess kept her oath and built a church named “Panagia Galini”, the old church which still stands in the cemetery of Agia Galini. Agia Galini, is a small, tortuous village, with small old houses in the village which seem squashed by the larger apartments bouncing up in the area and the hotels in Agia Galini, built to accommodate rising numbers of visitors. What makes Agia Galini unique is the amphitheatrical layout of its houses on the hill, offering a wonderful view of the harbour and the Bay of Messara. The view of the village from the harbour is similarly lovely, especially in the evening and at night.

Gouves, the perfect choice for family holidays
Gouves is located 18 km east of Heraklion city, close to Gournes, consisted of a large area which is separated into two villages. The seaside village is called Kato Gouves and the old village next to the mountain Ederi is called Ano Gouves. The name Gouves is mostly referring to the seaside village. Gouves is a residential area which is neither a village nor a town, mostly developed because of tourism. It has a main road that starts from the highway and ends to the coast of the seaside village. This place is full of hotels, apartments and rooms to let. Gouves offers peaceful holidays, ideal for families with children. Here you will find mostly families that enjoy the lovely sandy beaches, close to all necessary amenities. The beach of Gouves is very well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, water sports, showers and changing rooms. The sea has fine sand and shallow water but is open to the frequent north winds, that’s why it is wavy. Therefore, there are several small piers and small marinas nearby, where you can swim, protected by the waves. The road of Gouves runs along the coast, which is full of beach bars, coffee shops and restaurants. In the evening you can walk along this road and enjoy the sunset. A place worth visiting is the church of St. Constantine, which is built within a small pine forest, just next to the sea. It is situated in a very scenic seascape and this is why hundreds of couples from Heraklion choose to get married here. Further north, you can visit the Cave of Agia Paraskevi, located near the village of Skotino. The resort of Gouves in Crete is the perfect choice for family holidays. With some lovely beaches and great places to eat. Gouves is close to the airport and the capital city with its modern shops.

Analipsi, a landscape quintessential to what Greece looks like
The village of Analipsi is located 20km east of Heraklion and takes its name after the church of the Ascension of Christ. It is located in a fertile valley, cultivated mainly with olive groves. It is also known as Analipsis Hersonissou, as it is very close to the seaside resort of Hersonissos.
Tourist development in Analipsis began very recently and that sets her apart from other seaside resorts in the area. Thus, Analipsis maintains a very authentic Cretan character. Once you enter the village you will be surrounded by white houses with beautiful gardens and olive groves. One can stroll around the alleys and the stone-paved square, which is reasonably lively in the afternoon. Many shops and cafes can be found in the main commercial street of the village, which runs upright the coast.
One very picturesque sight traveller can visit is the little church in the beach of Analipsis. The waves are leaping at the underpinning of the church, thus creating a very scenic landscape which is adorned in the typical imaginary of travellers over what quintessential Greece looks like.
East of the church the main beach of Analipsis is located, which is reasonably long, sandy and organized with umbrellas and sunbeds. In the west side of the church, the coast is covered by unsmooth rocks and most people do not prefer it for swimming unless they want to spend some quiet time or take a walk below the tamarisk trees.
If you walk further west you can find a small, sandy cove which offers shelter from the summer winds and the sea is rough elsewhere. At the mouth of Apostemis creek lies another sandy beach. Due to its proximity to the river, one can find a few ducks waddling around.
Makri Gialos "The Long Beach", a real hidden treasure for tourists
Starting as a humble harbour disconnected by any road network until the 50s, Makrigialos has faced such development that it now stands as one of the largest and most popular destinations of Southeast Crete. Numerous businesses operate in the village, so visitors can choose from an array variety of hotels, taverns, restaurants, bars, cafes, supermarkets and bakeries. Also, ATMs are widely available.
The key asset that drove up Makrigilos' popularity is the beautiful and shallow beaches in and around the surrounding area and the magnificent mountain range of Thripti that ascends on the horizon north of the village. The main beach of Makrigialos lies in front of Analipsi and it's 1km long. The official name of the beach is 'Makrigialos' but some locals refer to it as 'Hani' or simply 'Long Beach'. The beach is adorned by thick layers of golden sand and is well-organized. Here you can find a selection of cafes and restaurants, umbrellas and sunbeds, shower facilities, water sports and shady tamarisk trees. The temperature of the water is quite high even in winter times and the waters are shallow and calm, thus making the beach of Analipsi ideal for families with children.
West of the village and behind the harbour, lies a little-known beach named Kalamokanias, paved with coarse sand. North of the port, in Katovigli, you can find a small sandy beach, which is considered the extension of Makrigialos beach. Katovigli is also well organized and free umbrellas and sunbeds are installed for beach-goers.
Apart from the gorgeous coastline, visitors should not miss the ancient ruins of the Roman villa, dating back to the 2nd century. This site is quite unique from an architectural perspective and visitors can admire the remnants of some elaborate Roman baths and mosaics.
The village location is also exquisite as it faces an impressive mountain backdrop. Visitors can visit some of the local gorges which are equally as rewarding as the more famous Samaria Gorge. After a hike, visitors can enjoy time at the village harbour, sit in a cafe and just watch the world go by. Makry Gialos is an ideal place for relaxing holidays away from mass tourism.

Karteros, 3km of golden sand next to Heraklion
Karteros is a resort village, 7km east of the Heraklion airport. The bay of Karteros is 3,5km long. On this long bay there are two settlements, Karteros and Amnissos, but because of the rapid tourism development, the two villages are now merged to one.
In this beautiful beachfront, with the golden sand, you will find many hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and beach bars. Unfortunately, Karteros Bay is open to north winds, that’s why the sea is sometimes wavy. There are no rocks here and the waters are shallow, making ideal for families with small children. The less crowded side of the beach is located just next to the Heraklion airport and it is called Florida. In Florida ends up the river of Karteros which during summertime is dry. Around the area, there are two churches, St John and St Nikon, which are built inside a cave. The main beach of Karteros is very well organized and you can find all touristic amenities. The next beach east of Karteros beach is named Xenia, after a local abandoned hotel. East of Xenia beach is the hill of Paleohora. The archaeologists believe that this is where the ancient town of Amnisos was built. The excavations have revealed several buildings, a large temple and a Minoan harbour. To the east, you will find the famous Minoan Lilies villa. This villa is considered to be the resort house of King Minos. East of the villa is the last part of Karteros bay which is called Tobruk. Here you will find a lot of restaurants, hotels and fish taverns. The beachfront is also very well organized with a nice sandy beach.
Karteros is ideal for family holidays or it can be used as a base for exploring Crete. It is a little bit noisy though as the aeroplanes approach the landing airway of Nikos Kazantzakis airport from this part of the island.

Milatos, a secret gem in Crete
Milatos is a small fishing village located 45km east of Heraklion Town, just next to Sisi. Milatos is an ancient city from Minoan times very important because of its geostrategic position. The area is a true Cretan landscape with small rocky coves, ancient olive trees and crystal-clear water. Here you will find many beaches suitable for swimming.
One kilometre east of Milatos, at Pigada you will some small isolated bays with sand, which are surrounded by high rocks and enjoy your own private beach. The main beach of Milatos is just next to the picturesque small harbour. It is a large beach with pebbles and rocks but unfortunately very wavy. The next beach is located inside the harbour near the taverns of the village. It is a small sandy beach, quite well-organized, preferred by most of the visitors and families with small children, as the water is always calm.
The famous Milatos cave is located close to the village. However, the Milatos cave is really known for a drama which unfolded with Turkish invaders in February 1823. Early in 1823, the residents of the surrounding area took refuge in the Milatos Cave to hide from the Turkish troops of Hasan Pasha, who were plundering and looting Lassithi. The Cretan rebel leaders, with a tiny force of about 150 men, fought the Pasha's large army around the cave in a desperate defence of the local inhabitants. The fighting went on for two weeks, until the besieged, suffering from extreme hunger and thirst, dared a heroic, but devastating escape. The defending warriors were slaughtered, many of the older ones trampled to death by oncoming Cavalry, the captured children were sold into slavery and 18 priests were burned to death.
Milatos is ideal for relaxing holidays away from mass tourism and close to Heraklion town and Hersonissos. It can be easily used as your base for exploring Crete.
