hi! ik you probably won’t see this but i just want you to know that even after 6 months, i still can’t get your series out of my head 😭 i hope any family situations you’re dealing with will get better and that you won’t feel pressured to write anymore! if you ever feel that you can, pls come back to writing one day bc your series was so good!

hii loves <3 i owe u a huge apology ... im really sorry for completely disappearing off the face of the earth :( i promised i would update from time to time but.. yeah i never came back. things regarding the personal issues i mentioned in my last post have been put in order (kinda) but i was pretty busy the whole summer bcs of my job + i changed my phone and lost all the spiderverse au stuff... and didnt even think about trying to recover it once i started college again. so im very sorry fr for leaving it on a cliffhanger and saying nothing for six months.

but!! i have some things to add:

first of all, i reread the whole spiderverse au and the planning i made beforehand and it really motivated me to write the ending :) however all the apps and pictures i used for the profiles and social media are still lost so it might take me a while to find everything again and organizing the next chapters so they make sense with the ones i already edited.

second, good news!! i left three chapters of the smau ready to post in my drafts so ill post these later/while i prepare everything to continue writing (which i hope won't take too long lol)

and finally, i have a question for yall. i watched hunter x hunter recently and got all the hype for jujutsu kaisen again with the new season coming out, so ive been thinking of expanding the fandoms i write for and add those two? i might have been planning a short jjk series so i was wondering if you'd be interested in reading them here, since i almost only write about bllk and the themes of this new series might be pretty different to the tone my works have had till now (darker, probably). so please tell me what u think <3

also! i'll be answering the asks u left me in a while, and i noticed we hit 300 followers in these past months so thank you so so much, with all my heart, for liking my works!! even tho im not exactly constant, writing remains one of my biggest passions, and it fills me with joy seeing that u enjoy what i do. thank u for the wait and sorry for keeping the hiatus for so so long. i'm back now (more or less) soo stay tuned! <3

chapter 17. canon event iii: the fracture.

it’s too elegant a place for any of you to really feel comfortable. the kind where the lighting is dim for ambiance, not privacy, where the waiters are too well-dressed and the water costs more than your monthly metro card. sae, of course, fits in perfectly. he orders confidently without looking at the menu. rin picks something at random. you try not to stare.

you are tense —not because of the setting, but because of sae. he hasn’t said anything cruel, not yet. he hasn’t looked at you in that way that makes you feel like you have to earn your place at the table. but the pressure of being here, of being beside rin and in front of his impossibly well-composed older brother, presses against your lungs like something solid.

you don’t think sae is a bad person, but the few times you’ve met him before, he’s always said something that got stuck in your head for the rest of the month. you are not scared of him, but you measure every move you make and every word you speak in front of him.

he's itoshi sae, at the end of the day —his smirk sounds like a challenge, as if he's daring anyone to contradict him, and his eyes taste of superiority, like someone who needs nothing more than a glance to remind you he’s better than you. he's barely two years older than his brother and you, but he's probably the person who has impressed you the most in your life.

he looks so much like rin, and at the same time, he's so different.

sae turns to his brother after the starters arrive. “so. how’s school?”

his voice is flat. not interested —just ticking boxes.

rin’s jaw tightens. “fine.”

you take a sip of water from a glass that probably costs more than your rent, avoiding conversation. that's another reason why sae scares you —he always knows how to turn simple polite conversation into a double-edged sword.

“you doing alright with your classes? that online degree or whatever?”

“i’m managing.”

sae nods, sips his wine. “i’m doing well. the academy’s going fine. top of my class last semester. i’ll graduate early if i keep this up.” 

he doesn’t say it to brag. he says it like a fact, uncontradictable like gravity.

“that’s good,” rin mumbles.

“i figured i should tell you,” sae adds, almost as an afterthought, lips tinted in wine. “since i’m still paying for your degree.”

there’s a shift. the tension goes brittle.

rin looks up, and there’s something sharp in his voice now. “i didn’t ask you to pay for it.”

“no,” sae concedes. “but someone had to. you know mom and dad would’ve wanted you to study something useful.”

rin cocks an eyebrow, a bitter comeback ready on the tip of his tongue.

but suddenly everything breaks.

the explosion doesn't come with warning —just heat, sound, and blinding light. a shockwave knocks half the restaurant sideways, glasses shatter, people scream, the chandeliers above them sway like dying stars. it’s chaos, all at once: the thud of debris crashing down, fire licking the curtains, someone bleeding on the floor. one of the windows explodes inward, and the skyline fractures.

the last thing you see before the smoke covers everything is the bright mikage corp. tower across the street, glinting in the distance through what used to be the glass wall. it stands tall and untouched, practically next door to this destruction.

you think of reo, then wonder if you will ever be able to see your friends again after this night.

next to you, rin doesn’t move —his brain halts mid-synapse, his limbs don’t respond.

but sae does.

even with blood dripping down his temple and a jagged piece of crystal lodged in his shoulder, he acts. he moves in front of you without a word, shields rin with one arm, you with the other. he shoves you down just as the ceiling groans and more glass falls.

“you need to stay here,” sae tells him. “you need to stay down.”

he wipes the blood from his chin with his hand and stands up from the rubble, attracting the attention of the customers and waiters fleeing the collapse, analysing the place. there's a flash of turquoise coming from his eyes, and you can't help but think of rin when you look at him—he stands like an ice sculpture, impassive, in the middle of a blizzard. like a savior in the middle of the war.

a war of fire, chaos, and debris, in this case.

“wait, sae…”

his brother turns to rin one last time, and swallows hard as he looks at him. no one notices how his hand trembles as he stares back into the same large teal eyes that have followed him all his life.

“i said stay here.” he stands again, wincing. his white shirt is soaked through with red. “i’ll be back.”

“sae, don’t!” rin’s voice cracks as he tries to stand. 

he knows he should act, help the people trapped beneath the collapsed ceiling, be the hero he's been for the past few weeks. save people like he saved you two days ago.

but you keep crouched at his side, trembling hands grabbing his dark jeans like a lifeline, and he’s unable to let go of you. 

he tries to warn his brother again, voice a bit more desperate, slightly broken. “the structure’s unstable! look, that column, sae…”

sae turns to him, just briefly. the firelight catches in his eyes.

“it’s my job, rin. it’ll be fine.”

it isn’t.

something buckles, something falls. something crushes the table where you were sitting five seconds ago —sae is thrown across the room by the shock. for a moment, he doesn’t get up.

rin’s world narrows to a single frame: his brother—bleeding, still—on the floor. the sound dulls into a distant ringing, the smoke thickens. people are crying around him, someone is calling emergency services and there’s a waiter screaming for help.

but he doesn’t hear anything—not the screams, not the sirens, not your voice calling his name.

all he can see is his brother. not the best person in the world, not someone who cares about half as much as he cares about you. but he's the only family he has left.

lying motionless on the floor, just a few feet away, sae’s arm bent at a wrong angle. there’s blood dripping from his temple to the marble, and he’s still breathing—barely—but not moving.

rin stumbles forward like he’s sleepwalking, knees giving out when he finally reaches him. you follow him, hands on his shoulders, using it as a lifeline as well as an anchor. his hand hovers above sae’s chest for a second, afraid to touch, to feel him still. or worse, not.

“sae,” he whispers. it’s barely a sound. “hey, come on. you have to be okay, you always are fucking okay. you’re perfect, remember? the perfect son, the perfect brother, the perfect student. someone as good as you can’t be… can’t… sae?”

there’s a whimper —it’s his own.

and then a hand finds his chin, gentle, but firm. your face streaked with dust, your lips trembling when you turn his head to yours.

“rin.” his name sounds like a cry in your lips. “this isn’t safe, you can’t stay here. we can’t.”

“but he’s—” his voice breaks. “i didn’t do anything. i didn’t do anything. he moved, he protected us, but i…”

“you’re not losing him,” you say, trying not to cry with all your might. “you’re not, okay? you’re not. you are not losing him, just like you didn’t lose me.”

his eyes sparkle at your words, and for a moment, his gaze seems to focus again. he looks at you, amazed, almost, as if you were the apparition of an angel in the midst of the disaster.

rin doesn’t get a chance to answer. uniformed officers rush in, shouting orders, checking pulses. one of them grabs rin by the arm, trying to guide him back. he resists, eyes fixed on sae like he’ll disappear if he blinks.

“no, wait, let me… he’s my- he’s my…”

you can't help but feel your heart crack at rin's tone. you've seen him angry, yelling. you've healed his bloody knuckles, you've let him withdraw into himself.

but now he's begging, eyes wide open like a puppy watching its owner abandon it for the first time. his voice is cracking, his lower lip trembling, tears hanging from his eyelashes.

this last week has been too much, you guess. too many scares, too much fear, too many feelings spilling out in that silent plea that falls from his mouth. 

you've never seen him break like this.

“we need you to step back,” one of the officers says. another crouches near sae, radio pressed to his mouth.

“copy that. agent in training itoshi from district 5. wounded but responsive. suspected rib fractures, some blood loss, disoriented but breathing. we’ve got multiple civilian casualties. suspected gas leak in the kitchen. begin evacuation protocol.”

someone touches rin again. a gentler grip, this time, from a different officer. he looks older, but not the kind that looks worn out, but experienced. he bends down to rin’s level. 

"what’s your name, son?"

rin opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. you answer for him, running your fingers along his arm from his shoulder to his wrist, gently surrounding it.

“rin. his name’s itoshi rin.”

the man looks at you, and then back at rin. his expression shifts—recognition, and something like heartbreak.

“…alright. come on, rin,” the officer says, crouching to help him up. “sae’s your brother, right? he’s gonna be okay. let’s get you out of here.”

rin’s legs barely work, but the officer steadies him, hand warm on his back. he sees your hand still grabbing his wrist, and he sketches a soft smile.

“you’re not alone, okay?” the officer says again. “sae’s tough. just like your father was. that kind of strength—it runs in the family. you’re all heroes, kid. let’s go.”

rin walks. and, beside him, you follow.

chapter 15. canon event ii: the fall.

you were never supposed to take that many coffees.

five americanos —not even your usual sweet coffee order. no water. no food. just caffeine buzzing through your bloodstream like a countdown you hadn’t even realized had started. 

you had just had an exam, and since you’ve been anxious for the last two weeks, you linked unease to the exhaustion after the test. so when your friends tell you they want to go to this new restaurant in manhattan, you accept without thinking much. you’ll be fine once you sit and have a sip of water.

but you’ve walked just a few blocks to get the subway, and now you’re not fine.

you’re surrounded by the boys—chigiri, nagi, reo, and rin, walking beside you, everyone talking about something and nothing and laughing about a joke you didn’t catch. your mind is fraying. your hands feel cold despite the sun, and everything around you is too bright, too loud, too much. when you enter the platform, it gets even worse.

the heat is stifling, the fabric of your sweatshirt itches against your arms, but your whole body feels frozen. your mouth is dry and pasty from dehydration, and the aftertaste of coffee in your tongue is making you want to throw up. you take uneven steps, trying to keep up with chigiri next to you, but there are too many people and suddenly you can't see anyone —the faces blur together. the colors blend. thousands of black dots invade your entire vision— and the voices feel distant, as if someone had put you in a glass jar.

you don’t say anything, and no one notices when you suddenly stop in the middle of the platform. you no longer see chigiri's red hair, reo's back, nagi's figure, or rin's shadow —just a large mass of colors that suddenly merges into black. 

and you don’t even stumble because of someone else. your legs suddenly forget how to walk, and they falter.

no one sees it when your foot misses the edge of the platform, and no one sees it before you fall —you’re already unconscious, so your body is a dead weigh as it disappears. there are no screams, no cries. just the edge of a dream unraveling before anyone can notice it was even there.

rin’s the first to realize it —the space behind him suddenly feels too empty. he’s been listening to reo complain about his father’s unannounced trips the whole way, so he hasn’t been able to talk to you yet, but he’s been conscious of your presence at his back the whole time. and now, suddenly, he doesn’t feel it anymore.

he glances to the left, says your name softly. then again —asking. then pleading. once. twice. he turns fully and you’re not there.

his stomach drops. he doesn’t even able to warn the others —panic takes hold of him just like it did three days ago.

and then it happens.

a scream from the other end of the station, near the entrance —sharp, piercing, terrified. an old woman, he realizes as he turns to her, her hand trembling as she points.

“there’s a girl on the tracks! someone save her!”

rin’s world stops.

people freeze, someone gasps, there are already phones in hands, recording. reo —or maybe chigiri— calls out to rin as he starts walking, running, away from them —but his voice is drowned out by the sudden sound of the train approaching, building up like a drumbeat in rin’s ears. it’s too fast, it’s too close. he can’t think —he just races.

and, waiting in the other platform, so does isagi —he hasn’t even received bachira’s signal yet, but he can’t help it. his body acts before his brain does.

they both move at the same time —like something ancient has snapped awake in their chests. unwitting like instinct, innate like survival, raw like terror.

rin reaches first, and isagi gets there just half a second later. 

it's an unnatural quickness, a reaction time impossible for a normal human, much less two. but the public’s shock is enough to make it look logical—two boys jumping in to save a girl, just in time.

once sitting on the floor of the platform, a circle of people around him, rin pulls you up. his arms wrap around you before your body even fully registers in his vision—he holds you like something sacred. something already slipping away. 

when he caresses your cheek softly, your skin is cold —your lips dry, your pulse faint.

but you are real. and you are there.

the train roars past you, and people are already talking and passing by —a miserable, insignificant moment that someone will upload to social media later. but it practically gives the two boys sitting next to you a heart attack.

isagi is beside you, shaking, voice broken as he dials emergency services. he’s already pulling a bottle of water from someone’s bag, thanking them for their help —scanning the platform with his eyes. he finds bachira at the far end, too far to be the one who pushed you.

he looks at your face —eyes closed, expression relaxed, as if you were finally getting the nap you’ve been needing for days.

isagi swallows, throat dry —the fear of losing you, upon seeing your inert body on the tracks, tore at his insides, but seeing you peacefully lying in rin's arms is even worse.

because isagi isn’t the one who saved you. because he isn’t the one who gets to hold you. because he can't be the one caressing your cheek, feeling your skin beneath his fingers, waiting for you to wake up and see him first.

but he has no right to ask for that, either.

so he chooses to be the logical one, pushing down every messy thought into a corner of his mind. he’s so calm it feels automatic —the kind of calm born from fear so sharp it crystallizes into action. he has to act now. he can break later.

on the other side, rin still has you in his arms, but he can’t move —he’s kneeling on the ground, cradling you, the hand on your cheek now gripping your fingers so tightly it must hurt. he just stares down at your face. 

you’re pale, slack, unconscious —you don’t look like you’re sleeping at all to him. you always have this little frown on your face when you sleep, but now you look peaceful. too peaceful, maybe. enough to terrify him.

for a moment, he thinks he’s too late —he truly believes he’s lost you forever. 

he hears nothing but silence until your lashes flutter, your chest catches a breath, and your lips part slightly —and the sound of his heart beating so fast rises on his ears and snaps him out of the shock.

still, it’s isagi who quickly pours water into your mouth. who finds a protein bar —and when you take a bite, he lets out a breathless laugh and says, “you scared the shit out of me.”

and you thank him, voice low, raspy and cracked. you accept his help, take his hand when he helps you sit up and lean against the wall. he confirms he’s already called an ambulance when you say your head hurts and you don’t remember anything since you entered the subway.

but when everything calms and you start feeling a little bit better, it’s rin you look for.

your eyes find his —blurry and dazed— and your arms go around his shoulders without hesitation.

he forgets to breathe when you start crying, realizing you could have just died. rin lets you cling to him and tremble in his arms —and he holds you like he’ll never let go again.

both isagi and rin give you a few minutes to collect yourself, then help you walk up the stairs. chigiri, reo and nagi are there too, and they don’t let go of your side when the ambulance arrives and professionals check you.

they say you’re fine —caffeine, dehydration and lack of food caused your fainting. no bruises. just go home, eat, rest.

so rin grabs your hand and waits while chigiri calls kunigami to pick you up. he doesn’t say a word the entire ride. doesn’t blink. just keeps his fingers tightly tangled with yours like it’s the only thing keeping him grounded.

once you’re home, he doesn’t even thank chigiri or kunigami —just takes you inside, gets you water, makes you sit on the couch with the cat, and starts cooking whatever he can find in the fridge.

there are no words between you, no complaints. just a silence so raw it would feel like glass shattering if it broke.

and later, when he sits with you in the sofa, some program playing on the tv, he grabs your hand again. and you don’t say anything —just let him hold you. feel your fingertips on his skin.

for a moment—just one single, devastating moment—he thought he’d lost you. and he doesn’t know how to live in a world where that could ever happen.

chapter 14. canon event i: the loss.

content. cussing. yn is stressed rin is desperate and isagi is frustrated lets say

the only sound that echoes in your apartment when you finally arrive after a very long morning is the metallic clatter of your keys falling haphazardly onto the small table in the hall, and a long, weary sigh rising from the depths of your chest. you don't even bother picking up the jacket you just threw on the floor, the backpack you left on the side of the hallway —all you can think about right now is crashing on the couch, cuddling your cat, and closing your eyes while you pretend you don't have two more finals tomorrow.

but saespidey isn’t on her usual spot on the sofa, and the moment you call for her, there’s no answer. no familiar thump of little paws, no soft meow. suddenly the apartment feels too quiet.

you check under the table, by the window, in your room —calling her nonstop in case she’s hiding somewhere or she’s gotten stuck behind a piece of furniture or something —which is a very common thing for cats to do, apparently—, but you get nothing. 

there’s only one place left you haven’t searched in yet. you stand at rin’s door.

for some reason, you hesitate before stepping in. it’s as tidy and sterile as always —clean black sheets, grey painted walls. one single picture of rin and his brother in the desk, near the dozen of polaroids of you two, sticked to the headboard of his bed. there’s a long forgotten skateboard in the corner of the room, a football in the shelve, his clothes hanging neatly from the rack. 

there’s something weird in the air, though, weighing on your shoulders. you look at his desk chair, empty. rin probably hasn't sat in it in weeks — but he’s in his room again, you lied to chigiri everytime he asked. he’s stressed lately, always holed up there.

you’ve said it so many times you could almost believe it yourself. but now, standing in this empty space, painfully his and strangely unknown, it feels like you’re a ghost haunting it. or maybe it’s him. you’re not sure anymore.

you back out slowly —after confirming that the cat isn’t there—, thumb hovering over your phone, ready to text chigiri or kunigami —maybe she slipped downstairs?

the text is half written when a loud, clinky sound startles you.

tap tap tap.

your head snaps toward the sound, and your instinct kicks in. you grab the first thing your hand finds —rin’s abandoned skateboard— and edge toward the living room, your heart pounding.

you're so startled when you turn your head and see someone standing on the other side of your window that you accidentally drop your skateboard to the floor. the shock is such that you can't even scream.

it takes you a few seconds to realize it's isagi on the other side of the window.

“yn!!” he shouts, hand grabbing the metallic frame of your window, breathless. “i came up as i saw your apartment lights turn on, i was waiting—i was on break in the cafe and i saw your cat jump out the window a while ago and-”

“what-” your brain short-circuits. you don’t process the rest of the words that fall out his mouth “what? how the hell do you even know how my cat looks? and if you knew why didn’t you- i don’t know, why didn’t you tell chigiri as soon as it happened?!”

“chigiri’s shown me more photos of your cat than of anything else in his life,” he says, like that explained everything. “and he told me you’re neighbors, so obviously it’s your cat if i see it run out your window. also, today’s his day off. i don’t have his number, and no one answered downstairs, so... i waited for you.”

you blink. right. of course. nagi’s streaming today and they club is at his house. kunigami works mornings. rin is somewhere in the city, overworking as he’s been for the last whole week. 

it is just you here.

“come on,” he offers, already reaching for the railing. “i’ll help you look.”

“why are you helping me? and don’t you have work?”

he shrugs. “my shift ended a while ago, i told you i’ve been waiting for you. and i’m the one who saw where she’s gone, of course i’m going to help you. we might still catch her.”

you don’t think it twice, though, as suspicious as all the situation can seem. the panic for losing saespidey, the literal light of your life, is greater than anything else. 

so just like that, you're moving. the skateboard abandoned on the floor. your phone forgotten on the couch—because you didn’t even realize it when isagi shot a thin spiderweb to your hoodie’s pocket, quietly taking it from you and tossing it onto the cushions when you weren’t looking.

you don’t even think about it —you’re out the window, following isagi without a second thought. you forget about telling rin, telling chigiri, telling anyone you’re gone.

the only things in your mind are your cat, and isagi at your side.

rin is going to lose his mind.

he’s already circled half of new york twice, rooftop to rooftop, alley to alley. his hands are shaking under the suit after hours of searching for you, and not just from the adrenaline or the cold wind rushing past him as he moves too fast to think.

he left your phone home, in case you came back and saw all his messages while he was away. but the had been no response, no call back, not even a fucking “i’m okay” after almost ten whole hours.

he tries calling you again, just in case, and, to no one's surprise —no answer. 

he doesn’t even care if reo or nagi or chigiri reach him and hear him cursing under his breath anymore. he’s already ditched them half a dozen times today—they keep trying to trail him with a fucking camera on hand like he’s not about to rip the city apart. 

he’s been trying not to think about it, but he can’t get it out his mind —if the green spiderman has touched you, if he’s done anything to you- if he’s even looked at you-

he swears he’s going to kill him.

after trying to follow a meditation exercise on youtube while hidden in an alley and, of course, ending up even more anxious than before, he decides to swing back toward the apartment. it’s not even because he wants to rest —he just needs a cold shower. something to snap his brain back into focus, to cool the sick feeling coiling tight in his chest.

of course, he has every intention of heading back out the second he changes.

rin has just one foot out of the shower when he hears it —and he swears that simple, almost inaudible click of the front door has managed to completely silence the irregular heartbeat that had been aggressively kicking his chest the whole day.

he doesn’t think, doesn’t even dry off properly. he just yanks the towel tighter around his waist and bolts out of the bathroom —barefoot, hair dripping, heart now in his throat.

and there you are. your hair is messy, your eyes swollen, and there's a grey stripped hair fluff in your arms. you seem tired, but also relieved, as you walk in laughing beside someone he doesn’t know.

rin stops dead in the middle of the hallway.

you’re standing there, in the middle of the living room, giggling like you haven’t been missing for hours, like you didn’t almost give him a goddamn heart attack. and you’re next to some guy he doesn't know. he has black hair, a bright smile, and he's wearing a jacket too big for him over the café’s apron, like he’s trying too hard to look casual.

that’s isagi, he concludes. the new waiter who had guessed your usual order on your first meeting.

“gosh, rin,” you say, completely unfazed by the fact that he’s half naked, standing there like some deranged phantom. “you have no idea what kind of day i’ve had. i’ve been chasing saespidey all over the city. thank god isagi helped me-”

“how the fuck do you forget your phone at home, yn.”

his voice is sharp —it cuts through your sentence like a blade. isagi frowns instantly, his gaze flicking toward you protectively.

“i don’t know, i just forgot it, i’m sorry,” you say, hands up in a placating gesture. “i was freaking out about the cat, i didn’t even think…”

rin interrupts you again.

“i’ve been looking for you. all fucking day.” the look in his eyes is dark, deep teal like a void. however, his voice cracks, just barely, when he says “you can’t even imagine how much i-”

he runs a hand through his hair, frustrated, echoing that same gesture isagi saw on the rooftop a few weeks ago. it’s a tic of exhaustion. or helplessness. or both. 

rin lifts his gaze to look at isagi.

“and who the fuck is this-”

“i told you about him,” you cut in, a little stern now. “he’s the new guy at chigiri’s café. don’t be rude.”

rin shuts up, but his eyes snap toward isagi like he’d burn a hole through him if he could. he takes a step closer, shoulders tense, jaw clenched —his height is intimidating already, but nothing like the lethal look in his eyes.

isagi holds his ground, holds his gaze. 

however, looking at him closely for the first time, spiderman suit off, the only thing he can think is this is him. this is rin. fuck.

in his universe, he would never believed you’d like someone like this, whose vibes are so different to his —but still, he feels intimidated by him.

he’s beautiful and terrifying and seems to suck the air out of the room just by existing—like a black panther watching from the shadows, or a marble sculpture standing tall inside a temple.

isagi doesn’t avoid his gaze, though, and rin doesn’t hit him. he doesn’t yell.

instead, he turns. then walks past him, toward you and the cat in your arms.

two seconds pass, it seems like the air freezes.

he reaches out first —soft, almost reverent— and pets the animal gently. you swear his hands are still trembling. 

and then, slowly, he lifts his hand again, toward you.

it hovers near your face. like he wants to touch you. like he can’t believe you’re here and needs proof you’re real —but he stops halfaway.

his palm settles awkwardly on your shoulder instead.

“don’t. never. never ever in your life scare me like that again,” he breathes out “god, i even texted the fucking reo.”

you smile, suddenly tender —you may be the only person in that room who's noticed, but there's a dull glimmer in the turquoise in rin's eyes. tiredness, and relief— “don’t worry. i won’t make you go through that again.”

you keep looking at him for a few moments, as if reminding him that you are there, that you haven't gone anywhere —and he understands. you can tell by the way he allows himself to blink again, to exhale a sigh. 

you turn to isagi.

“thank you so much for helping me,” you say, beaming at him. “if you let me, i’d like to invite you to dinner…”

rin clears his throat.

“…another day,” you finish. “somewhere else. as a thank-you.”

isagi’s breath catches. he wants to say yes so, so badly —it reminds him of how you, back in his world, had asked him out first. how nervous you were. how he said yes without even thinking.

but this isn’t his timeline, and you aren’t his at all.

“no, don’t worry,” he says, forcing a smile, voice light. “i’m fine just knowing you found your cat.”

and then he turns to leave, feeling rin’s sharp eyes heavy on his back the entire time.
