Face to face. Silence as their lullaby. Arthur’s nights used to be loud, full of music, partying, or his own mind pounding in his ears. But now…
Ludwig lay beside him, eyes finally closed after hours of staring at paperwork, brow relaxed, hair loose and covering part of his face. Arthur slipped his hand into Ludwig’s, amazed by just how much bigger they were. Rough and calloused with thick fingers but oh so warm. The exact opposite of Arthur’s smaller, bonier, colder ones. And yet they fit together perfectly.
They weren’t soulmates. Arthur refused to believe in such a thing despite his hidden romantic side. Especially for their kind, where things like romance seemed to be denied to them time and time again. But Ludwig…It all seemed too perfect. Stubborn enough to push back when Arthur’s pride was getting in the way, but also gentle and attentive when Arthur broke to pieces and needed to be put back together.
He traced the lines within Ludwig’s palm. Mapping out every inch.
Ludwig pulled the hand away, eyes flying open. “What are you doing,” he asked, hand pulled protectively against his chest.
“Just admiring you.” Arthur snatched up Ludwig’s hand again, lacing their fingers together. “A perfect fit don’t you think?”
“You’re almost as sappy as Francis.”
Though he hated being compared to his ‘greatest enemy,’ Arthur couldn’t help but grin when he met Ludwig’s eyes. Blue so bright that even just a sliver of light sneaking between the curtains made them glow.
“I love you…” Arthur whispered, pressing a kiss on Ludwig’s knuckles.
“You really must be tired,” Ludwig snorted.
“What? Can I not love on my boyfriend?”
Ludwig just chuckled and shook his head, pulling Arthur close. “I love you too.”
Arthur nuzzled into Ludwig’s chest. “Goodnight love.”
