Finally fully natural! 02.05.2013
So instead of studying for my finals tomorrow i just cut off the rest of my relaxed ends (about 3-4 inches)...yes procrastination at it's finest..It's been TWO YEARSSS (and 2 months) since my last relaxer....i'm proud of myself for sticking to my goal of at least 2 years had so many moments of wanting to cut it all off or just get a relaxer but i did it :D now i'm ready for it to get super long! somebody give me a magic growth potion lol. To All the transitioners who follow my tumblr you can do it! Just keep your goal in mind and take it day by day.
so i stopped using relaxers last june and my hair is about 3in natural and the rest is in transition. my hair is neck length. my problem is that i have no idea what to do with my hair. could you give me tips? should i do the big chop?
Congrats on reaching 8 months! :) That is one of the most frustrating things about transitioning, those times when you don't know what to do with your hair. Ever tried a rod set? It’s time consuming to set but lasts for a week and looks beautiful. Mini twists or plaits, fancy braided updos, bantu knots and bantu knot outs, twist outs, braid outs. You could find countless youtube videos on all these styles.
Do the big chop when you are ready and sure you wouldn't regret it or if your hair is breaking off at a rapid pace. I really can't tell you whether or not to big chop because it's really a personal choice. You could try this, look at vids and pics of women who have big chopped at 8 months and ask yourself if you are comfortable with that length and go from there. Maybe you are maybe you need a few more months.
Hope this helps you!
I am thinking about starting to transition to my natural hair now so by the time i get to college I could either be all natural or have another month to go. I have a few problems though. I swim for my high school and at least twice a week we have morning practice, so what do I do with my hair then and with swimming in general. Also my mom doesn't support my decision so much and i am really going to need her support, so what do I do?? Thanks and I love your blog gives me lots of motivation!!
Great plan :) For swimming you could use naptural85's technique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bgjH8Gcql8. Afterwards you could do a french braid(or any hairstyle you can do quickly) after its air dried a bit if you don't mind damp hair or you can let it air dry during the day and pull it into a bun when it's dried. I would suggest doing deep conditioning treatments weekly and wearing a swim cap. Listen to your hair and adjust your routine to suit.
I can relate to you with your mom not supporting your decision, next month will make it 2 yrs now i've been transitioning and she is still not a fan however she was much worse before. All I can tell you is you have to be sure this is what you want to do and show her how strongly you want to do this, show her videos, pictures, talk about it, include her in it if possible. For e.g show her a video of a hairstyle you want to try and ask for her help. She may surprise you one day. If all attempts fail and she still isn't on board just take this as an opportunity to explore your own personal strength and commitment, don't let any negative comments get to you and look for support elsewhere. You could even msg me :) I wish you all the best in your journey!
