I have so many thoughts right now and no one to talk to, so get ranted.
Back on my previous ask. And about the first two episodes, LIKE, THEY HAD A SILENT CONVO WITH THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. BUDDY, YOU KNEW HIM FOR NOT EVEN A WEEK, AND YOU'RE DOING THIS??? HOW??? I wanna call them platonic soulmates lwk.
It's still insane how that happened. A lot of people see HC Ray as someone who doesn't like physical affection, so taking that in, Henry just constantly (S1 & 2 and a bit of S3 too) jumps into his arms and has no issue with it.
Like. He was angry at Schwoz for, yk, taking his gf, and he was implied to be angry at him for all those 3 (??? I have a bad memory) Years clearly about to deny it when Charlotte said to have Schwoz stay (I swear Schwoz is the better uncle for Charlotte), but the ONE time that Henry just says, "Come on, Ray." (Or something similar), he agree nearly immediately.
He's not even trying in the later seasons (Looking at the episodes where Henry gets hired back and when Jasper knows)
Their connection really is crazy isn't it... I actually think about how well they match each other's energy a lot, like they obviously clicked from the start, and then the more unhealthy codependent they get the worse their joint braincell problem gets too. Also they're extremely similar— both at their core and because they basically went through the same unique life experience of being a child soldier at some point... Platonic soulmates seems like an appropriate term for them although probably not in the happiest way possible given the way s5 ended, more like they're fated to meet in every life but they're also doomed in every single one of them.
And yes Henry will always be Ray's exception in all areas but I think others have written better thinkpieces about that than what I can do rn... All I'll say is that Ray's increasing attachment to Henry is really fascinating. I've seen people talk about Ray not wiping Jasper's memory as a moment of character development for him and I actually disagree... There is a reason Ray is so adamnant on keeping their identities secret and it's because it's a major safety risk, and he obviously doesn't consider Jasper reliable enough to keep said secret, but he still employs Jasper to appease Henry even though he knows it's not a responsible decision. Such a stark contrast to the proffessional way he handled Charlotte finding out in s1
Ughh there's so much to be said about them but I'm getting off-track here so I'll stop now lol... But yeah I adore them a lot
Can we just appreciate the fact that Ray's weakness is literally just this kid who started taking adults down since he was 13? Villains are terrified of him yet the adult that they SHOULD be scared off is in fact the second issue in their mind. Ray cannot say no to Henry. He needs no convincing from him.
Yes you're so right Ray will do pretty much anything for Henry and it's hilarious because you know he wouldn't do that kind of stuff for anyone else. Generally self-centered man who will whine and groan but will eventually do batshit insane things like pursuing Henry's weirdo teacher multiple times or attending Jasper's birthday party as captain man just because Henry asked him to. I don't think he even realises how willingly he inconveniences himself for Henry
hai do you want to hear me yap about my hd au (poses cutely)
YES ALWAYS!!! hit me up twin 😼 If anyone wants to discuss dangerverse im always here I also love yapping about it... I know I mostly post art but I swear I have so many thoughts about this show that I will write down sometime
I have to say I'm super happy with how it turned out! The colors, the clothes, the tiny subtle details that nobody will ever notice 😂 I also tried to make a little bit of Art Nouveau with this frame and it was really fun to do!
Quick Historical fact: From what I understand, ancient authors referred to the "turned thumb" during the games, but without ever specifying in which direction (since, back then, it was obvious to everyone). Because of that, it's a bit tricky to figure out exactly which gesture meant what.
Some say the thumbs down ordered a specific kind of execution, while others think it was a sign to lower weapons, with the thumb representing the sword (but there's also this thing about tucking the thumb inside the hand to say "Alright, let's stop that shit", so basically, it's a total mess). Anyway, voilà ✨
✨ Some close ups (and spoilers...?) ✨
I really wanted Geta to have his thumb turned down, since he's the one deciding who dies and who lives. I also wanted to establish a kind of connection with the blood pouring out of his glass to Caracalla's dagger. A subtle reminder of the moment Geta throws his glass content to his brother's face.
The blood on Geta's neck and the dropping blood from Caracalla's hidden ear is a reference to their fates in the movie.
so Normal about this moment in Back to the Danger part 1
like. throughout the entire scene, Ray keeps himself between Drex and Henry. not once does he put his arm down, nor let Henry get in front of him. look.
do you think when ray was parachuting away he saw the blimp crash into mount swellview and all he could do was watch with a broken heart and assume his best friend just burned up and died
tw for broken bones, mentions of nausea and vomiting, and mentions of a child getting hurt.
In this position, arm twisted roughly by some random thug, forearm braced over their thigh, pressure slowly building on the bone until it stops just short of snapping, Henry is reminded of a fight he got into when he'd just taken this job.
A teenager. Some guy who was probably no older than Henry is now. He'd been spoiling TV shows and movies just to ruin people's nights. Henry and Ray had learned the troublemaker would be at the early screening of Galaxy Wars, so they'd disguised themselves and headed to the movies.
The pressure on his arm returns. The thug shouts something at Captain Man. Henry's head is spinning too much to catch the words, but he shakes his head nonetheless. Ray can't give in, even if his arm gets broken. His thoughts drift back to that night at the theater.
The guy had called himself “The Spoiler”, which Henry thought was a stupid name, but it got the point across. He'd made himself known just before the previews for the movie started. Ray wasn't there, no, he was getting himself popcorn. Popcorn was more important than keeping an eye out for the guy. More important than doing his job. More important than protecting-
The bitterness in the memory startles Henry back to the present. He doesn't remember feeling bitter or upset at the time. He only really remembers the adrenaline.
Pressure again. Right. He's in the middle of a bust with Captain Man, and he's about to get his arm broken. He tries to twist out of the thug’s grip, but he must've been hit harder than he originally thought, because the move does more harm than good; His vision goes fuzzy at the edges and he's overcome with a feeling of nausea.
Has it always been this bad? Had fighting bad guys always had this risk? No, they couldn't have. Ray wouldn't have put a thirteen year old in constant danger.
Right?
The bones in his forearm are starting to hurt pretty bad now. It'd be nice if there wasn't pressure on them anymore. Ray says something; Henry still can't make out clear words. God, why can't he pay attention to anything? Does he have a concussion? That would suck. But it wouldn't be the first time.
His first concussion happened when he was fourteen. They'd been fighting Minyak and one of the hired goons had slammed Henry into a wall. His head had made contact first. He'd blacked out instantly. When he'd come to, both Captain Man and Nurse Cohort were kneeling over him, trying to rouse him. That had been fun to explain to his parents.
Speaking of his parents, Henry wondered if they ever wondered why he had blood on his clothes from time to time. Or why he had so many scars. Or why, sometimes, he flinched away when they'd show rare affection.
White-hot pain brings him back to the present. His arm was in the process of being broken. It takes three hits from the guy to break it fully, by the end of which Henry was close to vomiting from the pain. He'd screamed with each hit, though he only remembers the second and third ones.
After that, Ray takes care of the thug in seconds. The guy had gotten rid of his only leverage, so of course the fight was over. Henry just lays on the ground, trying not to move his arm even a fraction of an inch. He breathes hard through his nose, and only his nose; if he opens his mouth, he's gonna hurl.
“Kid. Kid, look at me.” Henry weakly lifts his head to look at his boss. Ray looks more serious than Henry's seen him lately. There's a light shining in his eyes all of a sudden, startling him and making him jostle the break. He cries out in pain at the movement. “Sorry- I'm sorry, just hang on-” There's a lot of concern in Ray's voice. Of course there is, Ray cares about him, obviously, but Henry is still surprised by it.
blarrgggghhh. I've been sitting on this for like. two months. got stuck. here it is.
