Guide to Transmogrification 3: One item, several looks

  In real life, two people don't look exactly the same in a piece of clothing because their bodies do not look the same. It's the same in World of Warcraft ... And then not at all.

One thing to keep in mind when transmogging is that not only do the different races and genders look different in an armour set - the armour actually changes too. The four characters here are all shown with the same plate items.

On taurens, worgens and trolls, footwear does not extend to the feet (or paws or hooves). And in many cases, the armour tends to be a lot more revealing on female characters than on male characters.

So what looks good on one race/gender may not look as good on another. A pair of boots may look bulky on one character and not on another, and you may need to work hard on a revealing set for your male toon or to cover up your female if that's what you want.

Guide to Transmogrification 2: Getting Inspired

So you want to transmog, and you know the basic rules. Now what? How do you find inspiration for a transmog set? There are, of course, many ways of going about it.

Premades There are quite a few "premade" sets (in lack of a better term) that Blizzard put in the game. So one way of finding a style that you like is looking at the tier sets. (They are usually sold by valor point/conquest point/honor point/justice point vendors.) There are other kinds of premade sets in the game, but we will talk more about them in a different guide later.

NPCs Some people like to model their transmog sets after NPCs in the game. A lot of the gear that they wear is obtainable. So you can find a rogue trainer and get inspired by his gear for your own rogue or take your point of departure in a character such as Jaina Proudmoore and go for similar colours for your cloth wearing character.

Other Players Sometimes you see another player in gear that looks really nice. If you right-click on their portrait, you can choose to "inspect" them. When you mouse-over their equipment, you can see what they are wearing. You can also look up the character on the official site (EU/US). There's a small, pink marker in the corner of transmogged items. If you mouse-over, the site shows you what the item has been transmogged to (and also where you get it).

A Certain Concept Sometimes you have an idea for a look and search for items that will match that. Perhaps you want something sexy and tight. Or something with a lot of skulls. Or something green. Or something imposing. You want your warlock to wear trousers or your death knight in a skirt. Icy-Veins has a database of items split up into classes and provides information on where to get the pieces as well, so that may be a good place to start.

Transmog sites There's a lot of them on the link list such as Mog My Gear. Here you can see pictures of tier sets and outfits that others have put together and either make the exact same ones or take your point of departure in one and mix it with other items.

Using what you have Some people keep quest rewards, green items and drops that bind on pickup if they like them and save them until they come across something else that matches. You may already have an item or two in your bags or bank that you really like the look of. You can start building a transmog set around that and find items of the same colour or style to go with it.

A lot of people combine several methods. You can get inspired by seeing another player with a nice weapon, then buy a couple of parts of a justice point set to go with it, use your own profession to create something else for it, and start running old raids for the last piece that will complete the set. - No matter how you go about it, there is a great number of possibilities.

Guide to Transmogrification 1: The Basics

Imagine having a warm winter coat. It's cold outside so you want to wear it, but it doesn't match anything else in your wardrobe, and it doesn't flatter your figure. Then imagine being able to make it look like a thin jacket or a nice blazer instead, but still being warm. Nice, right?

Transmogrification is the act of giving a piece of armour or a weapon in World of Warcraft the look of another item while it retains its original properties.

  Now, before you get too excited, there are limitations. Your warlock can't transmogrify (also called transmog, xmog or just mog) her robe to a plate chestpiece, and your druid can't transmog his staff into a rogue's dagger.

Here are some basic guidelines:

1) You need to have both items (the one you want transmogged and the one you want it transmogged to).

2) You can't transmog items of grey and white quality or legendaries (but there are rumours that the latter is subject to change).

3) The desired item has to be of a level that your character can equip (so a level 30 character can't transmog their gear into items only available to level 80+ characters).

4) You can only transmog cloth to cloth, leather to leather, mail to mail and plate to plate.

5) When it comes to weapons, the same thing applies. A two-hand weapon can't be transmogged to a one-hand weapon. (Bows, crossbows and guns can, however, be transmogged to eachother.)

6) If an item is class specific and your character is not that class, you can't transmog to it. So your hunter can't get the look of a "shaman only" item.

So where do you bring your items to have them transmogged? There are four so-called warpweavers (see what I did there?) in World of Warcraft who can transmog your items. Two of them are located in Alliance cities and two of them in Horde cities. Wowhead can tell you where exactly to find them.

Online Tools

Transmogger.info. If you know the names of the items you want to transmog, you can feed them to this handy site, see what they look like on a character model and save the set.

Icy-Veins. Armour sets and item models of practically everything moggable. Sorted into classes and with information on where to obtain the pieces. Mog My Gear. A lot of sets that you can view on every race and both genders sorted into greens, blues, purples and heirlooms. World of Warcraft Transmogrification guide. Has a lot of armour sets, but doesn't seem to have been updated for a while. Also home to some good explanations of transmogging and where to do it. World of Wardrobes. Items sorted according to kind and colour. Doesn't seem to have been updated for a while. WoWHead's comprehensive database of transmog sets. WoW Mogging. Armour sets sorted into class specifics. Has not been updated for a while. WoW Roleplay Gear. A lot of armour sets sorted into types (cloth, plate, mail and leather).

  Interactive Sites, Contests and Blogs

  Software and Addons

MogIt. An addon that enables you to quickly and easily view items on your character and make sets with gear you don't necessarily have in-game. WoW Model Viewer. Machinima artists use this for their videos, but you can load your character and play around with armourand weapons too.

Petopia. If you're a hunter, you can find a pet that will match your transmog here. Warcraft Mounts. Cruise with style. Warcraft Pets. Find the perfect vanity/battle pet to match. WoW Tabards. Find a tabard to go with your outfit.
