We made it!

Another year complete. I hope everyone has a lovely summer, and for those of you that work in the tourism industry, I hope we make tons of money this season! I’m really glad I took this class, and I really enjoyed learning how to dissect and critically interpret modern literature. To be honest, I didn’t even know what dystopia was before taking this course. I feel more educated now, and it was actually fun. Professor Clark, your class was perfect; don’t change a thing! You seem really happy and successful and I hope to become as passionate about my career when I get there as you are.

I feel the same way about this class. DON’T CHANGE A THING. To be honest, I wasn’t REALLY looking forward to a literature class, but I took Ms. Clark for 1102 and I knew that she would make it bearable. Well, I was very surprised about how much I really did enjoy this class and the books we read. Even though it is “Contemporary Literature”, I had a feeling we were going to be reading some modern day Shakespeare equivalent, and boy was I wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and if I am to ever take another Lit/Writing class I am definitely choosing Ms. Clark again as my teacher. (No, this isn’t an attempt to get on your good side Ms. Clark. ;-) )

This class was so much fun I have to agree. It was nice to have a kinda chill class this semester. Not really having to to worry about much beside reading. To be honest I don't really read a lot so to read 4 novels is probably the most I have read since middle school. Don't get me wrong I can read my text books all day but recreational reading is just not my thing. I feel like it really helped my vocabulary. I also like all the group work we did in class. Even though all had our own little clique and didn't really venture out much. All in all items a great class.

The Father

In “The Road” the fathers only motivation for living is his son. Everything he does is for his protection. When the father goes out hunting for food he leaves the boy with the gun, his only weapon, even though he knows he probably won’t use it. He try’s to teach him life lessons, like swimming, that a father would have taught his son in the old world. The father struggles with the idea of having to kill his son if they get caught. He wonders if he could do it, but he knows it is better than what they would do to him alive. He cares deeply about his son and although he finds his compassion for everyone, including the thief, annoying he often listens to him because he loves him.

I completely agree! The father loves his son so much. When the father always watched him sleep and thought about how peaceful it was. That action really gave me a idea of how much he loves him. When we watch movies with Married couples or lovers there's always that one scene where one spouse is just watching the other sleep. Then when they wake up they are like "you are so cute when you sleep" or whatever. It's a very cliche action of love in our world. Sure you can tell someone you love them you can tell them anything. The actions are what counts and you hit the nail on the head everything the man does is for the boy. He puts the boys happiness before his own. That's what love is isn't?...

Zoloft

All of the book we have read for class are just down right depressing. We got Montag who lives a fake life burning books. He's not happy, then his wife turns him in and leaves him. Then we got our boy Winston who just wants real love but the government won't let him and ends up getting rats put in his face. On to the handmaids tale. We read about the life of a baby maker, who her soul purpose in life is to pop out babys. And to end it all off there's a broken world of ash where every thing is grey and the boy has to watch his own dad die. Literature is just depressing as hell.

The boy

The boy in the book is a very interesting character to me. He is young, and not very out going we can tell that from the way he acts through out the story. It could be because there is really nothing else to live for but we would supper that from the dad, the one who actually new how the world used to be. The boy as far as we know has no idea of anything different then the way they are living now. It just amazed me how the man is outgoing the boy really just is not. Also the boy's conversations with his dad are very short and have little to no meaning. Could it be because he has had no real schooling or is the author trying to relate it to how the world is. Short and Left with no meaning.

Well I’m going to be another guy that mentions the “Walking Dead” because it’s what everybody is talking about. The father son relationship held within this story relates very much to “Corral” and Rick in the Walking Dead, the father and son in “The Road” have relevance to the protection that Rick gives to his son, and the fact that they are completely isolated from all humanity which cuts off their communication with anyone except themselves.

I thought of the walking dead too!! I have to agree with you of how much it relates to the walking dead. The man and the boy are just like Rick and his son in the show. The only difference I would say is that the boy in the show seems a little more out going about the whole situation. The boy in the book on the other hand seems very childish but that's just my opinion of him.

The Handmaids Tale

When I first started reading “the handmaids tale” I had no idea what it was going to be about. I started out a little confused about their society and how it worked, but eventually I caught on to their traditions and way of life. I couldn’t help but wonder how a society ends up like that. Later in the book they explain that there was war that involved the chemical Agent Orange leaving many of the people with injuries the made them unable to have children. The handmaids were supposed to be the people who could still have healthy children and it was their job to try to grow the population. They live under a very controlling, twisted government that has taken away all rights of the people, even their ability to love.

The part in the book about agent orange really caught my attention. I had a family member that was exposed to this while being overseas. This herbicide causes a lot of damage to the human body. It can cause different types of cancer, heart disease and parkinson's.There are many different drugs that can be used to suppress the affects it has on the body but none to really cure them. I have also read that in people who had long term exposure to the herbicide upped the chances of birth defects. I would still think that even how screwed up their society is they could find a place for a defective baby.

After just getting an Apple Watch the sound of it was cool, basically a phone but on your wrist. If you take a step back and look at it the Apple Watch and any of theses fitness trackers are really invasive. These companies such as Apple have information from where you are where you go all the way down to your heart rate and BMI. I'm guessing anyone with a computer could hack in to theses thing and know more about you then you do. We give up our privacy so that a watch on our arm can count how many steps we take. Kinda like after 9/11 when we gave up some of our privacy to be safer i.e. More invasive airport security. Tying it all up relating fascism to fitness trackers.

Handmaids tale part two

After reading chapter 34 it's the first thing out of the whole book that actually relates to real life, In my opinion anyway. When the commander is talking about how bad things used to be is what is really happening in our time now. He said that its so much better now that they have changed to the way they do things now. I'd have to agree with him oh how bad things used to be but I also don't think that they way the live is anywhere near how it should be. After all we are living in a world made plastic.

I watched this show once on Netflix it was short lived only two seasons. To sum it up in the first season they produced virus that infects people and then those people infect others by biting them. The second season is a bunch of crazy inbreds in short. In detail it is kinda like handmaid tale, sorta. So what they have is this one immortal dude that runs a camp on a island. On this camp he has a special building that he keeps women who come to the Island and he locks them in rooms. As you can probably tell he is the one who inseminates them. So all the kids are related and they grow up and do what humans do and reproduce. Making a "pure bread" society of inbreds all from this one immortal guy. Basically like handmaids tale with out the inbreds.

Handmaid's tale

Because I'm such a great procrastinator I have waited till the last night of spring break to start reading the book. Getting in to it was pretty rough.. Then main character is so broken and disoriented. I think that is why the book is so hard to read. The book is out of place and broken just like her, it could be ordered and worded in better ways. As I moved along I got to thinking that maybe it was on purpose. The author wants you to feel how she feels. So much going through your mind at all different times, mental chaos. She has memory's of how things used to be like when she had a garden of her own but they are faded. This mental chaos she is being put through does not help her remember things any better. So far she has only felt like she was in control of one thing, and that was she can still work it for the guard boys in the shack. The rest of the time she is less than a person.

Amber alert

After sitting in Best Buy when a amber alert got pushed through. It made me think of Fahrenheit 451 when they were looking for Montag. The part of the book when the government told everyone to go look out side and see if they see a man on the run. Could our government do that now? They send out theses Amber alerts to people in a certain area. So if they wanted to they could send in out to everyone in the areas around wear the person on the run would be right? But I mean do you really pay attention to it? Who would actually look for this person and if they saw him or her would they really turn them in. In my opinion I doubt it, but what do you think?

“1984″

This book, “1984″ by George Orwell is very similar to the other stories we have read in class like “Fahrenheit 451″ and the short stories such as “Harrison Bergeron” and “The Lottery”.  They all focus on different forms of a totalitarian or dystopian society.  Even “The Lottery” can be seen as totalitarian in a way.  It seems that every day our society becomes more and more similar to the stories we have read in class.  For example, in “1984″ Winston describes how the televisions are always on, and how they are always watching.  Today, the same can happen easily.  Nearly everyone owns a smart phone or a computer with a webcam.  Could the same thing happening in “1984″ not happen to us as well?

That makes me think of that tv show called person of interest. The little computer that they call the machine can spy on who ever and whenever. In the show its a good thing at least in the beginning because it saves the world from terrorist attacks and such. this much power could be used terribly if in the wrong hands. I do not want to spoil the show for anyone who has not seen it but, it shows you what could happen. You never know who could be looking at you through that little camera on the top of your phone or laptop while you are reading this post.

1984

After writing my paper it really had me thinking. We are on the track to being like the people in 1984. The people in the book are in miserable marriages just for the soul purpose to reproduce. The average divorce rate in our country now is 40-50%. We even get the luxury to marry who we love or at least who we think we love. So then why do some many marriages end in divorce? "If you loved someone, you loved him, and when you had nothing else to give, you still gave him love."(1984) if that's true who do you give your love too after you get a divorce? I mean I guess you could give it to your kids if you had any... You could love your religion. But how much longer will religion be around in our more and more secular world. All that's left is government. So in my opinion We will be like 1984 one day it's inevitable.

This novel, “1984″, is interesting to me because I am never sure what is going to happen next.  It always leaves me guessing.  I noticed this a few chapters in because I was trying to read the foreshadowing to piece together the plot, but it was difficult to do.  I think that the style of writing contributes to this because we only know as much about the world as Winston does.  I find it refreshing to read a book with a little bit of mystery about where it is going to end up.  Many books that are written now are easy to see through because they have all been written before.  Every movie that comes out now seems to just be another remake of another movie that has already been out because no one has any new ideas.  “1984″ is an old book but I see it as new in a sense because the idea of it is so radical and different and surprising compared to that of books and movies being released now.

1984 was definitely different. I agree with you on the part of you never know what is going to happen next. There wasn't a lot of irony in it because like you said we never knew more then the main character, Winston. I thought it was a okay book but it was such a struggle to get through some parts. I don't read a lot of books I'm more of an magazine article person. With that being said I don't really know the cliche of what will happen in the end. So all novels are interesting to me, beside this one it was just too hard to get in too 💁

1984

After finally finishing the book that I thought would never end. It kinda reminds me about some of the short stories that we read in class. The first one that came to mind was the one where everyone had to be equal, sorry I don't recall the name. In 1984 everyone basically is equal beside the porals. Big brother tells everyone what to think and when to think it, even rewriting history to what ever he wants. And then just like in the short story there is Winston the rebel. 1984 also kinda reminded me of the lottery. Most of the people don't even question the government they just do it. Kinda like the in the lottery how the winner was stoned. No one questions the authority figure.

I'm sure you all have been here or at least drove past it before. For those of you that haven't it's Aly's beach off 30A. Aly's beach in my opinion screams perfection. Every where you look the builders payed such close attention to detail. The buildings are all uniform, same style, same color and same concept. The landscaping is just as perfect, the grass a vibrant green all year long. The foliage is never overgrown always clean and neat. Aly's beach is just a place of immense detail, down to the perfectly lit trees lining the road. Which brings me to Winston in 1984. He describes in such great detail everything he sees, dreams and thinks of. Winston is just one of those people who pays a close attention to detail, which made me think of Aly's beach.

“A book is a loaded gun.”

I think this is a very powerful quote because it is true.  In the book “Fahrenheit 451″ it is so true that books are banned throughout the society.  I do not understand how a society could ever get to the point where they do not question authority and where something so small as a book is not allowed.  Reading this book only made me more thankful to live in The United States, although, it also brought to my attention how our society has slowly come closer and closer to being more and more like their society.  We spend the majority of our day watching television, playing on our smartphones, and updating our Facebook pages.  Many of us ignore the real things happening in the world, just like the people do in “Fahrenheit 451″.

This is so true. Our society as a whole is becoming more and more controlled and we don't even realize. It tells us what to say, how to look and how to act. Like you said we are always on our phones. We don't know how to communicate to each other face to face because we are always hiding behind a keyboard. We now "catch feelings" then slide in to his or her's DM's. Romance is lost, we toss around "I love you's" like they are "hellos". Ringing the doorbells are replaced with a "here" text. Theres no room for interpretation you are either right or wrong. Technology ruined adventure. We don't venture out past a power outlets because our iPhones might die. God forbid we loose signal. The world around us is rapidly changing but turn down for what, yolo.
