It has definitely been a pleasure, I'm going to be honest, sometimes I dreaded going to this class, but sometimes I was looking forward too it because whenever I didn't read, I could just listen in class to the summarizations and catch up on the reading, but when I did read (even though I'm not a big fan), I enjoyed the fact that reading does help your knowledge of how we see things in this world, and is also an excellent factor when it comes to better vocabulary in ordinary conversations. Other than that, Chris's puns in class or on Tumblr is a highlight of the semester, don't get how you do that, anyways its been a pleasure, see you guys on Monday!

Movie: The Road

The film did a really good job at sticking to the book. For some reason I imagined the boy to be much younger, but I guess the director wanted to go with a older boy for obvious reasons. The world I pictured when reading the book was exactly a match when watching the movie. The movie didn’t show the man that was struck by lightning and they added a part in the movie where a crowd of people killed the mom and child on the ice. The thief scene was really a tear jerker and the director did a nice job at sticking to what the book said. For most part the movie was really good and the director did a good job at choosing the actors.

I feel the same exact way, I think the director did a great job as well. I thought that the boy was a little younger than the movie portrayed him to be, but like you said, I think it was done for some obvious reasons like just being more realistic. I wonder how the director(s) interpreted the other movies we read in class. I know 1984 had a film adaptation, but I’m unsure about the others. I may have to check them out over the summer.

I agree as well! The director did good, but I felt like the movie started in the middle of the book. Personally, I wouldn’t have liked the movie if I hadn’t read the book. In the book, they had long hair. Obviously if a person is living in the wild they would have long hair. But when they did the haircuts, I expected them to cut their hair shorter. The reason is because in the book the boy said ‘won’t you be cold papa?’ It was interesting to see how the director interpreted the movie differently and the same as I percieved them.

I thought the film did a great job sticking to the book as well. There were a few minor differences but nothing that really altered the plot or the significance of anyone or anything involved. I noticed that the bamboo flute was not incorporated into the movie. Also the father dreamed of his wife much more often than in the book. Overall I think they did a good job depicting a dystopian society in their adaption from book to screen.

Yeah it was interesting that some of the small changes between the book and the movie didn't really effect how we viewed the movie having read the book before hand, because in your mind you tell yourself, "there are more flashbacks in the movie, or cannibals enjoy having BabQ's in the book, but not in the movie, sadly." It's one of those things, where you need to read the book either before or after watching the movie, to get a better picture of the dystopian society that it was placed in.

The movie vs The book!!

Where to start? OK, I will have to say in my opinion that the book was better than the movie to me. The boy seemed whiner to me in the movie than in the book. Maybe it was just me. I liked the father better in the movie because I actually got to see what he really meant by him saying “he lives for the boy” basically. He put himself in dangerous situations just to protect his son. I loved that about him. And there were some absent scenes that occurred in the book but not the movie. For example, the man that was struck by lightning wasn’t present in the movie and when the cannibals were chasing that woman and killed her ,that scene wasn’t present in the book. Well from my knowledge, I don’t remember reading about that. The book was in more detail than the movie so I guess that’s why I like it better. I also found it weird that the movie had a black man stealing but wasn’t any other black people in the movie besides that cannibal. Maybe it was just me, but I know that alot of movies portray a black person as a thief. But that scene really kinda ruffled my feathers because I hate the fact that my race is majority of the time doing something bad in a movie. I’m not racist but I get tired of the whole cliche thing. That’s my opinion though. But the plot in the movie followed the story majority of the time. I did thought the earthquake was earlier in the story than later in the movie. I’m glad I got a chance to read a great story. #4-23-2016

You know, when I was reading the book, I always saw Eli (the old man) as a black man. I actually saw the thief as a young white redneck. lol… hahaha. Oh boy, I guess we stereotype without noticing sometimes. I really didn’t notice the thief because he was black - and - I wonder if I would have done the same thing as he did. I bet I would have if I was starving the way he was. I’d like to think that maybe I only would have taken some food, but I’ll never know unless I’m in that situation. I see your point though. Hollywood use to do that on crime shows a lot in the 70’s and 80’s. So now, even if the casting isn’t trying to stereotype - it could be seen as insensitive and unaware. They could have easily made Eli a black man and cast the thief as a white dude. Although, maybe they specifically wanted to get Robert Duvall in there somewhere. They could have made the family that he joined a black family too. Anyway, I get it. Thanks for reminding us all that sometimes to see everything - you have to hear it from another person’s perspective.

Yeah its definately interesting to get a visual of the characters and they didn't necessarily turn out who we thought they were going to be, I thought at first for awhile that the movie was going to be violent and little extreme but it basically matches up with your normal gruesome film that has came out in the past 10 years because our society is use too it, wasn't a big fan of the movie but it gives me more of a visual understanding of certain parts of the book, so at least it was considered beneficial in some way.

So haven't seen the movie yet, it's so far so good, there are some differences I have realized so far that have to do with the piano in the movie, but it not being mentioned at all in the book. Another example could be the number of flashbacks the man has of his wife in the movie, even though the wife is only mentioned a few times in the book. She is mentioned when it's described that she walked away from the man and the boy, but in the movie, she technically committed suicide. Like I said, I enjoy the movie so far, but let's hope the ending of the movie doesn't suck as much as the book's ending.

Well I'm going to be another guy that mentions the "Walking Dead" because it's what everybody is talking about. The father son relationship held within this story relates very much to "Corral" and Rick in the Walking Dead, the father and son in "The Road" have relevance to the protection that Rick gives to his son, and the fact that they are completely isolated from all humanity which cuts off their communication with anyone except themselves.

Handmaids tale part two

After reading chapter 34 it’s the first thing out of the whole book that actually relates to real life, In my opinion anyway. When the commander is talking about how bad things used to be is what is really happening in our time now. He said that its so much better now that they have changed to the way they do things now. I’d have to agree with him oh how bad things used to be but I also don’t think that they way the live is anywhere near how it should be. After all we are living in a world made plastic.

The fact that our greatest interest is the fatal attacks going on in foreign countries or right on our front lawn is devastating knowing that we could care less about the person next to us, and more about those going through suffering, now I'm not saying it's a terrible thing to have sympathy for those who experience loss and pain but we also need to be mindful of the people around us that are just on their way to work or headed to the gym for their daily workout, the world has discontinued the spread of wisdom and love which distinguishes the need for interaction. I wish that we could just start over from page 1 in life that way we understand what it feels like to have nothing except each other. Little bit off in a tangent but completely necessary for the current environment we live in comparison with the Commanders saying that he is satisfied with the way things are now after they've been changed.

This book is getting more and more interesting as I become more open to what the author means to say. It takes me a few times to read the same line over and over again, but I realized that there is so many biblical examples thrown into the text that can be easily ignored and just viewed as a creation of the author. "Guardians of the Faith, Commanders of the Faithful, Angels, Eyes of the Lord," they all refer to the army, members of the police force, and men's roles in society. It is named the Republic of Gilead which is in reference to the books of Genesis, Jeremiah, and Job. Martha refers to the sister of Mary that was serving Jesus instead than listening to his teachings. I could go on and on, but the jist of it is Atwood incorporated so many biblical references within the text that could be easily passed by without taking a closer look. Deuces Lit class.

The danger of total equality

In “Harrison Bergeron,” Vonnegut suggests that total equality is not an ideal worth striving for, as many people believe, but a mistaken goal that is dangerous in both execution and outcome. To achieve physical and mental equality among all Americans, the government in Vonnegut’s story tortures its citizens. The beautiful must wear hideous masks or disfigure themselves, the intelligent must listen to earsplitting noises that impede their ability to think, and the graceful and strong must wear weights around their necks at all hours of the day. The insistence on total equality seeps into the citizens, who begin to dumb themselves down or hide their special attributes. Some behave this way because they have internalized the government’s goals, and others because they fear that the government will punish them severely if they display any remarkable abilities. Although equality is "ultimately” achieve in Vonnegut story it is at the cost of freedom and allowing people to be who that want to.

It's interesting that total equality can mean one thing to us in modern day such as our our rights but in this story, it actually means physical attributes or any "stand out" qualities which hopefully will never come in effect in our world. I can't imagine not seeing a person that represents courage, beauty, humbleness or any other unique trait that is leveled out with a negative trait. It sickens me that Vonnegut's portrayal of equality is basically stripping a person's uniqueness from them which we see as a crime against mankind. I guess that we need to give up our freedom in order to attain true "equality."

The Handmaid's Tale

I’m a little bit behind on the reading, but that’s okay because I have a whole week to do nothing except work and read this novel. AND a whole bunch of naps and soaking up some much needed vitamin D on the lovely, uncrowded beach of course. The further I get in the book, the more vulgar it becomes. Atwood isn’t shy and doesn’t hold back the most explicit details to say the least. It’s actually kind of funny! I’m looking forward to better grasping the plot of this literature while enjoying the week off from school-related stress and anxiety.

I feel the same way about this book. It is vulgar and some points are just so serious that I can’t take them seriously. I think it is interesting, no doubt, but it is not my kind of book just because of the content it has. Atwood is a very skillful writer and I like her style and looking for the symbolism she incorporates. It was an easy read and it really helped pass the time during my long road trip this passed week.

I often find myself enjoying the more vulgar points in Atwood’s words. Don’t get me wrong, considering the way Offred’s society conducts themselves is repugnant (when comparing it to today’s society, at least), but the concept itself is vulgar.

Essentially, it bastardized the concept of surrogacy and warped it into a prison sentence. Although, Offred could have been labeled an “Unwoman”, but could that not bear the question: Does Offred really have that much more freedom than an Unwoman?

According to her society, absolutely not. Though, through Offred’s thoughts and minimal actions, we see that it’s quite the opposite.

Dido, this beaches are empty and the fact that the lawsuits are just going to keep building up due to loss of income, it's still quiet for all of us locals, the author is straightforward and it seems assertive in a way but also she states the facts so that's why I enjoy her use of excessive detailing that describes and pinpoints every little thing. I wouldn't wanna get in an argument with the author because pretty sure I would be torn apart. I'm hoping I can further my knowledge along with listen to more of Atwood's descriptions throughout the remaining of the book.

De Oppresso Liber

The Handmaids Tale is not the book of my dreams, but it does bring to mind the nightmares of places I have been. Margaret Atwood said she did not write anything in the book that has not already happened in human history, but the truth is, the reality is far worse for millions of women today in the real world than those oppressed women in the book.

On my first combat deployment to Iraq (2004-2005), my unit was briefed on customs of the country by an Iraqi woman. At first she politely explained some of the culture and customs and how we as non-Muslims should tactfully navigate them. But it didn’t take long for her deep set anger to surface, before long she was railing at the treatment of women within the country and how the country needed to fundamentally change. She spoke to us, at risk of her own life. I remember as she left I remarked to a fellow Soldier that “We should give the Iraqi women the guns and combat training”. Twelve years later, I still think that would be the best course of action for the region, to arm the women and help them fight for their own freedom.

The women of Muslim countries are oppressed beyond the comprehension of most westerners, and they would be the ones truly motivated to progress towards democracy and freedom. When women literally have no voice, no will, and no way to escape the oppression of the society they live in, there can be no other word to describe it than ‘slavery’. In 2016, the world is a smaller place than ever before, and we as Americans have long taken on the responsibility of ensuring that oppression is not tolerated in the world. Yet every year our government pours billions of taxpayer dollars into countries that blatantly oppress women, countries such as Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to name a few.

I had the privilege and honor to serve in a Special Forces battalion in Afghanistan (2010-2011). The motto of Army Special Forces is “De Oppresso Liber” Latin for “To Free the Oppressed”. It was very hard for me to see a women covered from head to toe in a burka in the hot Afghani summer beaten with a stick by her husband while she carried two large bundles of firewood and was trailed by three small children, treated as nothing but another piece of livestock by her so-called ‘husband’. It was very hard to see the shallow pits stained with blood and strewn with rocks that lay on the edges of many villages, where women had been stoned to death for some perceived crime, including the ‘crime’ of reporting they had been raped (which rarely led to a man being convicted, but often leads to the stoning death of the women who dared to speak out). It is hard to know that millions of women live under such horrors and we have not acted on their behalf, on behalf of human Rights and of freedom itself. “De Oppresso Liber”

It is very hard to think of women being treated this way anywhere in the world. We have so much to be thankful for in the United States, and even in this country, women have had to fight for every bit of ground gained.  It wasn’t easy for the men of our country to give up all that control and power.  We have our own history of fighting for rights, of being stoned, of being labeled, etc.  More to your point, I see the courageous faces of women from the Muslim dominated countries and even in communist countries who risk life and limb to speak out and try to make their world a better place for their children and for all women.  When education is denied and the prospect of living up to one’s potential cannot be fathomed.  It’s hard not to judge another persons life by our own standards and values of the United States.  We assume that everyone wants freedom the way we want it - yet - I have heard women interviewed that say that the west has got it wrong and they are fine to be covered and follow the traditions of their faith.  I suppose - just as in our country there are many religious women here who are fine to just have babies, be submissive to their husbands, and allow their husband to lord over their life.  Still, I agree with you. To see the things you witnessed would have horrified me and probably gotten me into trouble because it would have been extremely hard to not be able to say anything.  That is like we have saw in our chosen readings for this class. There was something blissful to be ignorant.  It was a good thing to not know - and just life in that ignorance.  I suppose people can choose to do that about anything.  I saw a documentary once about the girls in Afghanistan that want nothing more than to go to school, but they have to stay home and make dinner and clean the house and help their mother with the younger children, etc.  Then, by the time they are 14 they are married off to some man 20 or more years their senior as a bride.  Never having a childhood, never learning to read or write.  Only given the opportunity to have children and be a servant to that man and his offspring.  Sad indeed.  Thank you so much for sharing your experiences.  It must have been a truly depressing place to be.  I’m glad that your heart is so kind toward the women there.  Thank you for your service. What an amazing experience you had, thank your for your service. It's crazy how we seem to take things for granted and how our country is so worried about the next president, that women in foreign countries are hoping that they won't be beaten or arrested today. Their idea of freedom and our idea of freedom is nearly the same exact, it's in the aspects of them trying to attain freedom daily and we already attain that freedom that they strive for. It makes me feel and I'm sure it makes all of us feel disgruntled. We can go to sleep at night without having to worry about the safety of ourselves and our families but the world changes so quickly that who knows where we'll be in a few years, hopefully not aggressively beating others because we're afraid of our own limitations.

Margaret Atwood, author of "A Handmaid's Tale", from what we saw in the video of her in an interview, she was blunt and straight to the point which wasn't signified by any known emotions, portrays herself like a boring sloth, but as intelligent as the worm on the game "BookWorm". She doesn't seem like a very approachable person if you were to just walk by her on the street. Her facial expressions and emotion cover up her intellect on religion along with her straightforward attitude that informs the public exactly what she means by her writings in "A Handmaid's Tale". The totalitarian Christian theocracy creates the idea that the government can be overthrown by anybody that has supporters and if you were to first meet Atwood, you wouldn't expect this theory within her range silenced intellect.

1984

After writing my paper it really had me thinking. We are on the track to being like the people in 1984. The people in the book are in miserable marriages just for the soul purpose to reproduce. The average divorce rate in our country now is 40-50%. We even get the luxury to marry who we love or at least who we think we love. So then why do some many marriages end in divorce? “If you loved someone, you loved him, and when you had nothing else to give, you still gave him love.”(1984) if that’s true who do you give your love too after you get a divorce? I mean I guess you could give it to your kids if you had any… You could love your religion. But how much longer will religion be around in our more and more secular world. All that’s left is government. So in my opinion We will be like 1984 one day it’s inevitable.

The fact that reproduction is the main purpose for marriage in the first place just doesn't add up in our world, but I agree with the idea that we will eventually be living in the same corrupted world. Our world gives glimpses of what could truly happen to all of us one day, such as the child limit in China, prohibiting the amount of boys and girls that they produce in each family. Abstaining from equality, there are some breaks within such as men being more "fit" for certain jobs and women being qualified for other jobs more than man. This is an approach to profiling which disperses a man's duty from a women's duty in 1984, and how they are able to coincide with one another to benefit either themselves or what the government tells them to do.

Alright so who procrastinated with the essay, this guy! Procrastination was only the beginning to my signification of Montag's courage displayed throughout the book. The fact that one man can go against all odds to portray bravery in a completely different aspect from what we live in today. Modern day actions would seek bravery as a last resort because we're frightened of stepping out of our comfortable zone. We want to live the amazing life of munching on cool ranch doritos while watching the Walking Dead on a massage chair. "It doesn't get any better than this." But it does, just depending upon what we're willing to do in order to make things right. Now opinion has a great deal with the way we make change, so often times were not afraid of the idea of change, we're more scared of the fact that people may judge us by the decisions we make, which can be detrimental to the confidence we all attain during the rebellion. It's important to keep in mind that whenever you are in a comfortable lifestyle, you know your doing something wrong.

Why is Winston so happy about Julia's response when he asks, Have you done this before?

Julia answers the question saying that she’s had sex hundreds of times and even with some of the party members, Winston was kinda hoping for more than hundreds of times which is a little bit creepy but who knows, the guy’s a freak. He was satisfied with her response because the idea of corruption gives him hope to be a demeaning and rebellious leader, so while she sleeps with men within the party, it makes the party seem gross and unprofessional. Sex is supposedly a “duty” in this time period and if its as much a requirement as going to the bathroom in the middle of the night when you ingested too much milk, then that’s somewhere I never want to be.

Purity was a Flawed Concept Anyway, Winston.

Corrupt to the bones, you say? Maybe that’s not such a bad thing. I’ll explain my thought process here in just a moment, but let’s do a quick rundown of, “what does Winston literally mean” vs. “what does Winston metaphorically mean”. Or really, my theories as to what he means vs. metaphorically means.

In a more literal sense, I think it’s Winston trying to be ~deep~. He’s trying to get across how strongly he feels about what they’re doing, and about the difficulties of trying to hook-up with someone in this world. He honestly hopes Julia’s slept with as many people as possible (unintentionally progressive, George Orwell!) which is echoed by his hope for,“everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” (Is he saying he hopes Julia slept with everyone? No, no he isn’t, but that’d be fantastic and hilarious.) He’s, in other words, using corruption as a euphemism for sex.  

Metaphorically is where we get to the interesting bare bones of it all. Now, in 2016, I can recognize the inherent problems of equating purity with goodness.

Purity is unattainable. Goodness should not be, and isn’t. 

Something that’s pure is flawless because it has no agency or movement. There no mistakes because there are no choices. Purity is a the stationary emptiness of a blank sheet of printer paper. Goodness is all of the color and life on to the canvas. Character comes from the scars and scratches.

But let’s back track to the 1940s, when this was written, and the fictional 1984 that it takes place in. Winston is about to hook up with Julia, a, “political act” in his words. He’s trying to understand how what he’s doing is impure (according to BB) and also good (according to how he himself feels about it). When he says purity, goodness, and virtue, he’s thinking about BB’s ideas of purity, goodness, and virtue. Think about BB’s other virtues: War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. (Everything regarding the “Junior Anti-Sex League”.) So really, when he hates purity, he hates Big Brother. He hates the Peaceful War, the Free Slaves, the Ignorant Strength. He hates Big Brother’s Pure Corruption. If purity is goodness in this world; if BB is pure, Winston wants to be corrupt. He wants everyone to be corrupt. To the bones. Leave no space for Big Brother ideal, no light for it to bask in. Live in a place where there is only darkness.

It’s interesting that you compare Winston’s thoughts and action in a literal and metaphorical sense. In a world so wrought with the ideology of being pure, it comes to no surprise that purity has a correlation to being good. This strongly appears in religious teachings.

With that being said, I have to dive in a little bit deeper and build upon what you have written, especially in the line, “He’s, in other words, using corruption as a euphemism for sex.” This, my friend, is the easiest, strongest, and most prevalent example of goodness and purity. Sex. From the immaculate conception of the virgin Mary to Mary Magdalene, we see the battle between good and pure.

Now, let’s twist this to present day. There’s no denying it, we live in a society that is trying to be sexually liberal, however, there is still the taboo of being too sexually liberated.

The question is, how sexually liberated it too liberated, in the eyes of society?

Forgive me on this response. I may have gone off the deep end with this tangent. I apologize in advance.

That’s quite the description of purity in a variety of different ways, instead of trying to “top that”, I’ll build on top of what you’ve already said. Purity is also seen as a defense mechanism that separates those of innocence and those who are guilty. For example, a woman that has promised to live a life of abstinence would be the opposite of a man who was willing to pursue any young stunna lookin girl, as long as he received pleasure at the end of the road or beginning of the road, whatever works for him. This concept puts Winston into the picture as the corrupted horn dog that seeks pleasure over purity, corruption over peace, and war over goodness. As the immaculate conception of Mary Magdalene has already been mentioned, this portrays a perfect example of what it truly means to attain purity, similar to buying a brand new car, no mileage, unscathed, cleansed to the max, and most importantly, the new car smell. A little dimmed down description compared to Mary or the ideal of purity but you get the point.

Winston Smith uses this quote in the first chapter of “1984″ to describe “the sate of the union” in a way, more specifically, the proles and their lack of knowledge of it.  They do not know the power they have because they do not know their numbers.  If they could see what the government was trying to hide from them they would be able to rebel against them, but they cannot and, therefore, never will.  As Winston Smith says here, however, “until they become conscious they will never rebel.”  This is true for plenty of situations in life.  If a person is unaware of a situation, they have no reason to change it.  For example, if a persons boyfriend/girlfriend is cheating on them and they do not know, then are they going to do anything about it?  No because they do not know about it.  The same can be said about the government in this book.  The proles are unaware of the governments trespassing, and therefore have no reason to oppose them.

Good example with a boyfriend/girlfriend cheating on one another, their unawareness also leads to assumptions. I feel as if the proles are being hidden from everything, some of them will want answers eventually so they start making assumptions on things they are completely blinded by in the world. It correlates to the idea of maintaining control over anything such as, dictatorships keeping order in their region or even when your training a puppy not to urinate on all of your shoes, these things require absolute control (to an extent) and if there is a break or gap within that control then it leaves the controlled subject to act against their leaders.

* I wouldn’t read if you haven’t finished chapter 2 just yet lol* This stood out to me. Books have a way of bringing about language that holds a powerful meaning. Whether it is to do with a specific character, action or description, books have power. Because the authors that wrote them used their imagination, thought and knowledge from experience. They don’t draw from other writers. They use their own original thought. Montag did it without even thinking he could ever do it! He said something so strong and direct and no one around him ever speaks that way. When I’m writing I try my hardest to create something that 100% came from me. And when I do I feel empowered. “I did that!” This is my own piece. A part of me laid out for anyone to see or hear. And Montag discovered this ability! I love this part of the book because of Montag’s inquisition (I think that’s the word I’m looking for) in himself and the man he is becoming. Books opened a door of self empowerment and development for Montag. And that’s what they do for me too. In this chapter his anger progresses and honestly, I love the way he reacts to the women at his house. I would have done the same thing. And I am seriously disliking Beatty. I knew from the way he was talking at the firehouse what was going to happen next! Plus, he said it was a “special case” I mean come on!!! Who doesn’t see it coming! The way Clara was bawling her eyes out! Ugh I bet she told!!!
