Can you murder someone with a ballpoint pen?Â
âDe Balpenmoordâ (translates to âthe ballpoint pen murderâ) is a famous Dutch murdercase that happened on the 25th of May in 1991. A 53-year-old woman from Leiden died that day because of a ballpoint pen that went through her right orbit into her sinus, her brains. The pen wasnât visible anymore from the outside and the womanâs death was almost instant.Â
Although nobody really knows what happened to the woman, there are a few theories. Some believe she was murdered by someone who shot the pen with a crossbow. This theory became very likely because the son of the woman told his psychotherapist that he had used a crossbow to shoot his mother. The son got arrested in 1995 and was sentenced to 12 years for murder but was set free in 1996 because experiments proved that the pen couldnât be shot with a crossbow. Still to this day, lots of other forensics (including Frank van der Goot, watch video here) are testing this and proving it actually is possible to easily kill someone with a ballpoint pen and crossbow. Eventhough there is enough proof, the ex-suspect canât get charged again because of  ââne bis in idemââ (which means that the suspect canât get punished for the same fact twice). The other theories are that the woman had fallen and the pen somehow got into her eye socket, or that she had comitted suicide by pushing the pen inside her head. This method of suicide is called ââintracranial self-stabbing.ââ
Luminol is a chemical that can be used to show trace amounts of blood by creating a light producing chemical reaction when mixed with hemoglobin.
Luminol powder is mixed into a liquid containing hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals. This mixture will then be sprayed over the area that is being examined.
The reaction of the Luminol spray mixing with the iron in blood will then produce a blue glow that can be seen in a dark room.
Other substances that can accidentally have the same reaction with Luminol are: bleach, urine, faeces & horseradish.
Unfortunately Luminol can destroy other crime scene evidence so it is usually used after other options have been explored.

Nathan Leopold and Richard Loebâoften collectively dubbed Leopold and Loebâwere a pair of affluent students attending the University of Chicago who abducted and murdered a 14-year-old boy. They had spent months on end meticulously plotting the murder, from the abduction to the body disposal. After typing up a ransom note, they commenced the hunt for their victim, eventually settling on 14-year-old Robert Franks, son of wealthy Chicago watch manufacturer Jacob Franks. Loeb was second cousins with Jacob Franks, so they were well-acquainted with each other. They implemented their carefully-crafted murder plan on May 21, 1924, They rented a car under a false alias and offered the boy a ride as he was walking home from school. After successfully luring him into the car, Loeb struck Robert in the head multiple times with a chisel, then dragged him into the backseat where he was gagged and thereafter died of blunt force trauma to the head. The duo then drove to their preset dumping spot, removing their victimâs clothing and pouring hydrochloric acid on his face, distinctive abdominal scar, and genitals to obliterate the boyâs identity, and stuffing his body in a culvert near some train tracks. About a week later, Leopold and Loeb confessed to the murder, admitting that they aspired to commit the ââperfect crimeââ and were motivated by the thrill of killing.
Both men were sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison. However, Loeb was killed by a fellow prisoner at the age of 30, and Leopold was released on parole in 1958.Â

Peter KĂŒrten first got a taste of murderâactually two murdersâwhen he was only 9-years-old when he drowned two young boys who he was swimming with. Authorities ruled the deaths as accidental and Peter got away with the crime. A sick, twisted individual, Peter had sex with a number of his sisters as well as animals. He took particular pleasure in stabbing sheep to death and watching blood spurt from them as he had intercourse with them. Not to anybodyâs surprise, Peter grew up to become a serial killing rapist. Unlike most serial killers, Peter didnât have a victim profile, or follow any particular pattern. He killed indiscriminatelyâmen, women, children, animalsâin various ways, from shooting, to stabbing, to strangling, and afterward sucking out the blood from their wounds, which earned him the moniker ââThe Vampire of DĂŒsseldorfââ. Peter later admitted that his primal motive to kill was one of sexual pleasure. Right before Peter was to be executed, he said, âTell meâafter my head is chopped off, will I still be able to hear, at least for a moment, the sound of my own blood gushing from the stump of my neck? That would be the pleasure to end all pleasures.â Peter was killed by the guillotine on July 2, 1931.Â
