VIRTUAL: Google Dives Underwater to Launch “Sea View” of the Great Barrier Reef
Can you imagine taking a deep dive into the largest natural coral formation on Earth without leaving your desk? A joint effort between Google, the University of Queensland, and the Caitlin Group will soon allow you to explore into Australia‘s Great Barrier Reef through any device connected to the Internet. Dubbed the Catlin Seaview Survey, the project will study how tiger sharks, green turtles, manta rays, and other creatures are affected by global warming, while sharing the mysterious sea views with the world.
The Catlin Seaview Survey will conduct and record a diagnostic on the health of the Barrier Reef through film and video. Four 360-degree cameras attached on Diver Propulsion Vehicles (DPVs) will be used for filming in shallow waters, while robotic subs will be used for deeper waters reaching up to 100 meters deep. Starting September this year, people from around the world will be able to visit YouTube,, choose a location deep underwater ,and go off on an unpredictable virtual dive!

Miles and Miles: Like Kayak Meets Pandora for Flights
source: MileWise
15 September 2011 | UrbanDaddy
We’ve seen your future, and you’re flying. On a plane. Definitely on a plane. But before you get a ticket for vacation/the holidays/your annual Halloween hot tub party in Ibiza (costumes mostly required), we wanted to offer some potentially life-altering help... in the form of a search engine. Meet MileWise, a flight-finder that brings all your richly deserved reward miles and points together in one place, online now. It’s basically Kayak meets Pandora meets good old-fashioned bartering. You’ll come here when you’ve got a huge amount of miles and points racked up from your occasional “business trips” to Vegas (nothing closes a deal like poolside blackjack), and you want someone else to suggest where to spend your next vacation. Let them know whatever rewards programs you’re a part of—frequent flyer miles, free sub clubs, whatever—plus, when and possibly where you’re looking to fly. Then, they’ll bring you a color-coded list of flights, each rated on a 100-point scale for price, lack of layovers and how many more rewards you’ll get. At that point, you’ll pick out your favorite route to Ibiza. And begin pondering creative Halloween eye patch placement.
SPACE: Space Pod Hotel Gives Galactic Tourists an Out of This World View
by Lori Zimmer, 08/19/11
Space tourism has become a reality -- albeit for the extremely rich, like Richard Branson. Now Russian design team Orbital Technologies are jumping on board the market for galactic vacations with their Commercial Space Station (CSS) hotel pod. Designed to be serve as a multiuse space station, the solar-powered orbiting space leisure craft could be a new vacation destination by 2016.
CSS will orbit the Earth from 217 miles away, where it will serve as a space station for scientific missions, as well as commercial use. Seven guests can luxuriate in one of the four hotel cabins on a vacation that offers views like no other – via large viewing portholes. Guests sleep in zippered vertical or horizontal sleeping bags, which keep them safe from floating about the cabin – a bit different from traditional camping. The bathrooms feature waterless air-flushing toilets. Tourists get a little more luxury than regular old astronauts – they may shower in a fully-sealed water cubicle, as opposed to the sponge baths that most astronauts endure when on a mission.
Also unlike “regular’ astronauts, no freeze-dried ice cream or spaghetti will be munched. Prepared on Earth, gourmet meals such as “braised veal cheeks with wild mushrooms and white bean puree,” are transported, then microwaved on board the hotel deck. Unfortunately, no alcohol is allowed.
After the peak space tourist season is over, CSS can be used for up to six months by scientists, and it will serve as an emergency station should a passing space craft face trouble.
No need to worry how you’ll get to the hotel pod – Orbital Technologies has made this an all-inclusive trip. The leisurely two-day journey by Soyuz rocket will set you back around $826,000. A five night hotel stay, including the microwaved gourmet meals, weighs in at just $165,000.

Some people watch Eyes Wide Shut and decry the dark vision of depravity and alienation. But you always thought the parties looked like a good time. Welcome to Voyeur, a lavish new nightspot suggesting that highbrow elegance and a bit of S&M are not mutually exclusive. Gotta say, you couldn't agree more. Behind dank casement windows salvaged from the original New York Times building, there awaits a dark lounge filled with corset-backed chairs and antique sofas made from bounced-against headboards. Lithe women fuss with their lingerie behind glass, maybe, or they really enjoy the sax from the stage. (You might also see a beauty doing stretches on the trapeze net above you—she must be hitting the gym later.) Once settled at your table, they'll happily mix your drinks tableside—in shot or martini form—with fresh juice concoctions like Watermelon-Jalapeno and White Peach-Sage. You probably already had dinner, but if you want to fuel up for the dance floor in the back, you can wave over some Crispy Shrimp Rolls and Fontina-Chorizo Grilled-Cheese Sandwiches. And far in the back, past the photo booth, apothecary bar and walls plastered in contact sheets from an illicit Mexico photo shoot, there's a private VIP room with a separate entrance and a giant chaise that could comfortably hold you and 10 beauties who appreciate furniture with well-placed handles… And anybody else who likes to watch.
