On a plane right now on my way to pick up the kiddos in Kentucky listening to a kid behind me react to his first time flying. He is freaking out so happy. "WOAH!! We're leaving the ground!" Often times when in a new town we try to explore as many new parks as possible. This means sometimes we end up in less than prestine neighborhoods while other times we find hidden gems. Today we found diamonds at Riverfront Park. To get to Riverfront Park you have to pass line after line of abandoned warehouses and factories. A rundown neighborhood that whispers tales of a more industrial age. To arrive the GPS tells you to turn right at what looks like a functioning warehouse and a road that just disappears behind the large building. Trying to trust technology we followed the road only to be led to a flooded lane that tested what our Subaru was capable of. The one way road wound around large shady trees with moss draping down covering the remains of what we soon realized were completely abandoned Southern style larger homes, the years of weathering leaving branches caved in through roofs and doors wide open. It made me wonder if perhaps this is how horror movies begin but the beauty of the quiet made us feel like true explorers. Finally coming to a friendly looking walker near some maintained yet still identical to the abandoned homes we asked him for directions he explained we were on an abandoned Navy base and the beautiful homes that surrounded us were old officers quarters long since forgotten. Pointing us in the right direction of the park finally we were able to get out and stretch our legs. A storm having just subsided the park though well maintained was almost empty and we were surprised to hear patriotic music playing as we passed a Navy War memorial. A boardwalk spanned the length of the park and allowed us to walk over the water to get to the sleek steal playground. As the hours passed in play slowly the park filled with fisherman using both reels, nets and crab cages. Some let us awkwardly watch them at their work and my kids stood hypnotized as fish after fish came in. One fisherman even let my kids hold their catch for a moment. One of our favorite parts about Florida so far is the incredible array of reptiles. We have already caught at least 3 🦎 lizards in our house 🏠 and fished at least 2 of these little frogs 🐸 from our pool. The kids are loving it and it almost makes up for the fact we are pretty much just staying in our AirBnB complex the whole time to avoid getting Corona. Still adventures though.
