Pietro nodded, agreeing with the statement, surprised to find he felt relieved that she understood. It gave him a chance to explain himself, too, his absence in Alexandria. He didn’t think he’d ever get to, assuming Octavia would have let him go the second the war was over. He hadn’t done it himself, the connection they’d shared so new to him it had shaken his entire worldview. Even if she hadn’t ever spoken to him again, he wouldn’t have forgotten her. But he expected the worst outcomes from the relationships he’d abandoned since the war had been won, always leading with pessimism. “She does. And… we needed zhis time together. Just us. We have never been apart like zhat before, you know. It.. felt like I had died.” Pietro found it easier to speak about it now that he’d nothing but the constant reassurance of Wanda’s presence for months. That and he trusted Octavia. The second she’d dropped the accusatory tone, he’d relaxed, allowing himself to be open for a moment. It wasn’t an apology, it wasn’t a proper recognition of their relationship, but it was a start.
“You wanted to go?” Pietro wasn’t the biggest fan of Bellamy’s, his memory of him marred by actions of the Capitol, but he felt grateful for him now, knowing he was just as protective of Octavia as he was of Wanda. They were almost mirrors of each other. “Mm. I am not sure I like it here. I have not seen too much, but it is.. busy. I prefer zhe open air.” At least the town was situated by the woods — they could escape whenever they needed, as they had been doing ever since Wanda accidentally destroyed their home. “But I am better. We are learning more about what happened, you know. Back then. I do not remember much, but it is important to Wanda zhat we know.” She’d recently confronted Rose, and since then, his sister’s energy had felt much lighter. He eyed her for a moment. “… So keres? How have you been?”
Octavia nodded, surprised to find that she believed everything he told her. She’d never met Wanda, or even seen the twins interact, but he’d mentioned her consistently in the Capitol, his worsening mental state directly tied to his absence from her. She liked to believe she understood it, considering all she’d known until her release from under the floor was Bellamy. He was her caretaker, her only relationship, the only person who knew her to love her. Luckily for the Blakes, they’d never been separated as the twins had. “I get it. If I was taken, and I didn’t know where Bell was or if he was even alive… I’d probably be the same.”
Pietro was being honest, more honest than they’d ever allowed themselves to be before, so Octavia decided to meet him there too. “There was one time, I thought we might’ve been. Separated. It was in the Capitol too, I was lost and I was scared. For a second I didn’t think I’d ever see him again,” she swallowed, uncomfortable memories of the Gala flooding back. “Someone saved me from that. I’m sorry that I couldn’t do the same for you.” The apology felt foreign on her tongue, never having said the words before, but she’d heard them often enough from her brother to understand the importance.
“I did. At least I did at the time.” She was unsure now. Octavia still disagreed with Coin, of course, but the Capitol was all she’d ever known. Moving to Alexandria had caused her to rethink everything, she’d had to adapt, change the very bones of who she was. She was unsure who she wanted to become. The fight was all she’d had, and without it, she felt lost. “Yeah, I prefer the open air too. I don’t think I belong here,” she admitted, meeting Pietro’s eye. It was also an answer to his question, if she was doing alright. In truth, she wasn’t sure. Physically, she was better than she’d ever been, and she enjoyed the exploration, the freedom. But as Bellamy immersed himself in new relationships, she felt stuck, as though she didn’t fit. “In the Capitol? I remember. I remember everything they did to you. What they wanted to make me do.”
I have no home.

Nell attempted a smile, as weary as it came across, appreciating the woman’s effort to meet her in the middle. Clearly she’d been in the wrong this time, and Nell had no qualms about that. “Either way, we’re safe. There’s nothing.” It was as if she was calming herself, nodding after she’d said the words, confirming it.
Nell certainly wasn’t expecting the follow up question, caught off guard. “Me? Am I.. okay?” Blinking for a moment, Nell nodded hesitantly. “I… think so, yeah. Relieved, really, that there… wasn’t something. Think I might need some more sleep.” A pause. “Are you?”
Octavia almost found herself wishing there had been a threat, having felt useless since she arrived in Alexandria. She’d been fighting one way another her whole life, and the absence of it was unsettling, although she was aware any normal person aimed for the reverse. “You’re right. Maybe you should catch up on your eight hours. But I’m fine, thanks.” It was automatic, at this point. Octavia didn’t presume that the rebels genuinely cared about her wellbeing, considering most of them still labelled her as a traitor.
Pietro rarely dared to step foot outside of the place he now shared with Wanda, unwilling to face reality, to confront all of the relationships that had changed in his absence. Octavia fell into that category, the speedster unsure where they stood. Hanna had confirmed her fate to him a few months earlier, and when he’d first heard, he couldn’t deny he’d been curious, immediately feeling compelled to go and speak to her. But time to recover with Wanda had outweighed anything else back then, so he’d swallowed it down, forced himself to forget about it. Perhaps she would forget, too. Perhaps the flicker of the something they’d shared in the Capitol had been borne only of their circumstances, and unlikely to lead anywhere.
Blinking down at her now, Pietro sensed her anger, and instantly felt irritated himself, uncomfortable with the unexpected confrontation. "My sister. She saved me.” He took a few moments to study her, which of course felt like minutes to him, surprised to hear she’d gone back for him. With a sigh, Pietro uncrossed his arms, feeling his defensiveness melt away. “You are still here. Zhis is good.”
Although Octavia still felt angry, she knew upon hearing his reasoning that she couldn’t argue. Because it felt familiar. Although she and Pietro had shared a something in the Capitol, it would never surpass the connection she and Bellamy had. Family came first. So if it was his sister that had come for him, she couldn’t berate him for it. If the roles were reversed, the Blakes would have done the exact same thing, and she didn’t want to be deemed a hypocrite. “Good. Well, I’m glad she found you. I know she means everything to you.”
Octavia wanted to convey that his absence had hurt her, but there was vulnerability there that she wasn’t willing to share yet. So instead, it went unspoken. “I am. My brother made sure of that.” It wasn’t a criticism against Pietro, but instead an offering, a sign that she understood. Considering this was the first time they’d seen each other in months, she didn’t want to waste it arguing, despite how she felt. “Are you feeling better? Do you like it here?”
