4 months ago, when my husband David and I found out we were going to have our first child, we were ecstatic. Despite the idea that we knew our lives were about to drastically change, we knew this was exactly what we had been waiting for. And to make our family holidays even busier, my two older sisters, Lindsey and Lauren, just had their own firstborns within 6 months of our announcement. If my retired parents didn’t want to be around newborns, they were out of luck. In preparation of this new pack of babies, I quickly started to adjust my surroundings and make changes around the house, and I eventually had to address my walls.
When Jensen and I opened Gallery1988 over a decade ago, having kids and decorating nurseries was the last thing on my mind. I was 22 years old when we started the business and basically still a child myself. Gallery1988 has been my one and only project and I’m just so proud of how much I’ve dedicated to this business. Sometimes I even think the gallery was my actual first child. So there is a part of me that wanted to bring that same G1988 passion into my child’s room. And so Tree and the Rock was born.
Partnering with my two sisters, we’ve decided to work on a project together, as new moms, focusing on artwork for nurseries and kid’s rooms. We realized variety was lacking in this very specific market. Our friends also found options to be limited when buying their nursery art, and these parents weren’t going to settle for work that everyone else had on their walls. Also, children’s artwork tends to be very bright and cartoony, which conflicts with the rest of the décor in the house. And with G1988, we know pop culture artwork isn’t always going to make sense with your plans. So with Tree and the Rock, we were looking for an aesthetic that’s simple and clean, yet charming and innocent for children with neutral color schemes. Ultimately, the parents are the buyers, so we want to work to appeal to them, but still be appropriate, and pleasing, for kids. As a new extension to Gallery1988, starting Tree and the Rock seemed like a natural progression.
We’re excited to continue our work with the amazing roster of Gallery1988 artists, as well as artists brand new to the art scene. Tree and the Rock will be an online store with several in-store pop-up events throughout the year. All of our prints are produced at Static Medium in Los Angeles, and we will offer free shipping on all domestic orders within the US!
Our website officially launches on Thursday, October 15th with a pop-up event at G1988 (West) in Los Angeles. There will be an opening reception from 7-9pm at 7308 Melrose Avenue. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Tree and the Rock pop-up store will run through Sunday, October 18th. In the meantime, you can visit our website at www.treeandtherock.com and follow us on social media @treeandtherock. We hope you follow us on this new adventure, both in art and parenthood.
