A fair melt.
Photos of Spectrum, live at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ, November 8, 1992.
Being a fan of his previous band, Spacemen 3, I was pretty psyched to see Sonic Boom’s new outfit, Spectrum. I was also there to interview the man himself for my fanzine, which I why I had my camera with me to get some photos for the issue.
The interview itself took place in a basement storage room below the Maxwell’s bar. Mr. Boom seemed a bit out of it, and the reason became clear as soon as I sat down and handed him a copy of issue #1 of my fanzine. He proceeded to open it up to the center, then reach into his bag for a baggie of weed, dumping the contents out into the spine and separating it carefully.
I had never taken drugs - heck, I didn’t even drink - so I tried to keep my cool as I asked questions while he proceeded to roll joint after joint. There were a lot of awkward silences as he appeared to nod off from time to time. Though he perked up considerably when he reached into his bag again to show off the enormous baggie of magic mushrooms that some fans in another city had given him at a previous show.
Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To, indeed.
