Not Alone (@trenchant-enforcement)
full-sight:
By now Nao had pretty much come down from his moment of panic. He continued supporting his weight against the bench as he took his last deep breaths before they returned to normal. In hindsight even though it was just Takumi, he hadn’t realized until just then how reckless he was behaving exactly, especially to leave himself so exposed from behind. But for now it seemed his moment of error had yielded something certainly unforseen to him– Takumi was a fullbringer (or at least he thinks that’s what it was) too.
He listened as the other explained how exactly he was channeling his abilities and how that led to their encounter. He also remembered Rukia saying something about using a similar method himself but he was too nervous to use it without being detected in public. It definitely made sense why Takumi would use it for patrolling though, he’s sure it makes him a more effective policeman. Still, Nao was impressed by the fact that Takumi was really using his powers so seriously. Having never seen someone else like this before was already one thing, but seeing someone that he knew and respected be that first individual was exceeding any expectation he could’ve had. He could feel a new feeling stirring up his heart rate again, excitement.
A slight smile drew upon his lips as the other spoke on the strength of Nao’s spiritual presence. Rukia had also made him aware of this concept as well and it felt nice to know that he’d thought well of his. “I see,” it’s easier for him to look up at Takumi now, and he releases his weight from the bench side to stand up fully on his own now. “I didn’t know I was creating a strong presence, but I guess for what I was trying to do I should’ve expected that would be the case.” He moves closer to his friend, “I’m surprised that it’s you too, I can’t believe…” he pauses and looks at the ground again for a moment. Finding the words for how he’s feeling as always been hard, but now it was impossible. “…that you have powers too, Takumi-san.” Just saying it out loud sounded so ridiculous to him, so far removed from the reality he tried so endlessly to mask all of this behind. Now here was someone who he’d already had created a bond with, who understood him now more than ever before.
“We’ve known each other for a while to say we’ve been sharing the same secret.”
Takumi found it oddly comforting, and even relieving, that he was meeting someone who possibly shared his experiences after years of having dealt with them alone. He never thought he’d ever come to feel that way. In fact even after speaking to Rukia, Takumi was resigned to knowing of the presence of others like him around, but never knowing them personally. The situation he was currently in definitely changed the game for him. Still, it was also strange, for never in his wildest dreams did he expect one of his own friends to be like him. He knew that it was something that in time he’d grow used to. Maybe, they could even learn from each other.
“We had no other choice at the time. I mean, having these powers and not fully understanding how they came about is weird enough. But imagine just taking a chance and trying to tell someone you know that you have them.” Takumi shook his head at the thought. “They’d probably think you were drunk or something worse.”
A sudden burst of chatter from his walkie-talkie interrupted his line of thoughts, and for a moment he listened to the exchange between his co-workers. Some trouble had come up in the area, but it was nothing too serious. After looking at his watch for the time, and confirming that he was officially off for the night, he shut off the walkie-talkie and looked back at Nao.
“Sorry about that. Sometimes they call me in for back up, but I think they’ve got it under control.” He paused, adjusting the walkie-talkie back on himself. “Either way, my shift is up so they won’t be needing me anymore.” He took a moment to recall what he meant to say next. Luckily, it came to him.
“Anyway, if you don’t mind me asking, just what were you trying to do earlier?” Takumi then asked, his sense of curiosity getting to him again. “Were you trying to practice some of your powers? And, what are they exactly?”
