Nikki just nods as she listen to him, hearing an answer that she expected. Still, if there weren’t many of them, it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Well, actually, it would. Her question was painful, but anytime she even vaguely thought about her past was painful. “Do you remember a lot of ‘em? When there’s a bunch of ‘em? If…would you –” shit, how should she word this.
“Did you reap a bunch of inhuman souls after a fire about seven years ago?”
Clay thought for a moment. “No, the only inhuman souls I deal with are the occasional animal pet or corvid. My sister tends to deal with any crowds we deal with, you can ask her if she’s home...” They stopped at a set of lights, the lights he always got stuck at for too long. He took the time to look her over. He knew vaguely what she was trying to find. It was what everyone who followed him wanted to find.
“Why bother?” He asked. No one who ventured down this path got an answer they wanted. And, Clay figured, they knew that when they started.
