lots of incredible memories with Ralph Hudson, please send some good thoughts his way with me, he had a go down this morning at Bonneville 🤗🙏🙌 . PRESS RELEASE August 14, 2020 Bonneville Salt Flats Wendover, Utah At approximately 8:20 a.m. Mountain Time today, veteran rider Ralph Hudson, age 69, lost control of his motorcycle land speed vehicle. He was attempting a speed record and was traveling approximately 252 mph. Ralph was treated by medical professionals at the scene and transported by ambulance to Life Flight and flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Tony London in Wendover, Utah with his Bonneville Land Speed Record breaking car he built, circa 1965. My Dad’s racing was over long before I came around or was even a twinkle, and sure we watched a bit of NASCAR together when it was on, but we never went to the races or even discussed it. So it just goes to show you that passions run deep and are contagious. No wonder sometimes I feel like I don’t have any say in the matter. . Thanks Dad for the inspiration, and all my adopted Dads/Uncles/Brothers for helping me and teaching me what I need to know to reach my goals. Thanks also to my Mom for picking such an innovative (we always had the best Halloween costumes in school), honorable, and charming fella. A little of the back story: Doing more with less. . The Little Italian Harley and I almost didn’t make the race this wkd. We were supposed to leave for El Mirage on Friday morning and on Thursday night was still having problems and it just wasn’t coming together. Around 9:30pm something happened and it finally started and wasn’t smoking. . We made it and got through inspection on Friday. Saturday we got in line and got to the front, it was almost our turn but it wouldn't start again and there was no spark. Worked on it in the sun in the rookie line with everyone watching. Not good, so went back to the pit and worked on it more and then BOOM, it started! . We got back in line and made a 1st pass. 80mph. The record is 83. Pretty good for the 1st try on a fresh engine. Chkd the plug, chgd the jet and got back in line. . It was late in the day and the wind had picked up. I wasn’t sure we’d make it to the front in time before they shut down the track so we didn’t even off load the bike from the truck. . We made it to the front and they said they’d let me go. I tried not to rush and got the bike down and all my gear on, the bike started up in one kick and I took off. . It was a great start and felt good then suddenly lost power and shut off. SHOOT!! Chkd the petcock and it was off, so turned it on, kicked started the bike, it came back on! By now the one of the inspectors had driven over and asked me what I wanted to do? The bike was revving and I said GO! and he said, ok then go! . So I took off again and got back into it and just focused on revving out each gear. Had no idea how fast we went because the speedo is broken, but it felt good. . They didn’t announce my time but I really wanted to know to know what changes to make for tmrw. When Kim picked us up we went straight to the timing tower. . 87.256mph!!! I looked again and asked if this was the right one. It was right, so we went to impound to have the bike chkd over to make it official. After some discussion about the false start and measuring the gas, bore, and stroke it became official. . I made my 1st land speed record! All the hard work and late nights paid off. There’s still work to do for Bonneville but for now this feels great! It takes a village: This process would not be possible without the constant support and guidance of Ralph Hudson and the seemingly never ending enthusiasm and crew help of Kim O’Reilly. Land speed racing requires assistance in line and at the end of the run, so literally I could not have done this without Kim’s help. Thank you to all my friends, racing family and my parents for the flood of support and kindness, racing has made me broke but I feel incredibly rich xo (at El Mirage Lake)
