I am so sick of the “he’s not just for clicks”/“we told him to work hard and not just be for clicks”/“play hockey the right way” narrative that multiple Flyers-affiliated folks have pushed onto Trevor when he joined the organization.

1) It’s very dog whistle old boys club to limit players self-promotion over the team

2) It’s such a misread of his actual skills and talents

3) It’s very ironic that a team that has shared 12+ posts promoting his extension for “clicks and engagement” on multiple platforms and has used him as a social media darling/puppet, are saying his play needs to not be that!

[continuing a conversation in my head] and i think it's fair to blame fans for demolishing the 4th wall but i also think there's at least a little bit of blame on teams courting interaction from both fujos and homophobes under the "any engagement is good engagement" type of posting. if you look at the comments on any given post about a heritage night, a non-christian holidays, or acknowledging any culture that's not white and usamerican and you see that nothing is moderated or pushed back on, that to me suggests that the pr and social media teams know what they're doing and they simply don't give a fuck as long as they can prove engagement. quantity > quality

like, as much as i/we can complain about the 4th wall breakage, the fact remains that for every fujo harrassing them, there will also be a man outright calling them gay slurs. and both are bad but we can't pretend that the teams aren't farming the latter for engagement too. end of year department report: our post about lunar new year received 200 comments. (190 of them used racial slurs or asked why we have to put politics in everything.) and while i wish my rpf playground wasn't being put on blast, i equally wish i could open comment sections without seeing racist slurs, ragebaiting white men, and transphobic commentary. so

#hockey content industrial complex #I feel like if ppl were legit about you can play and hockey is for everyone they would actually moderate TS.#Because how tf are poc supposed to feel safe about coming to games when they're worried some asshole is going to verbally harass them?#How can mom's let their kid play a sport where they can clearly see many fans of are hateful towards their kid?#how can anyone join just like a regular beer league and not worry they're going to get hatecrimed because of it?#and like some people will push through their concerns or feelings of unsafety. But a lot of people won't!! Bc that is a situation that #at a glance at the comment section suddenly seems dangerous or threatening! And not wanting to be exposed to threats is in fact #A very normal human behaviour!!!!!!!!!!
