jim kirk is the Queen of Distractionā¢ļø
bones is so submissive to it, damn it
usually jim gets bones to take a break when he has to be in med bay for a check-up, shots, nearly dying again, etc.Ā
so bones psychs himself up for it before jim has to come in, like, not this time not this time not this time
sometimes he doesnāt get to prepare becauseĀ āhe did what?! again? is he alive??ā
anyways, it usually starts with bones nagging him about his injuries again and taking care of himself, and then it gets eerily quiet and thats when bones knows
ex: āhey, when was the last time we had a drink? heard scotty smuggled in some of that andorian moonshine stuff.āĀ
bones is tempted, then, because heād been wanting to try some for ages but not this time
and then jim pulls out the big guns: that damn smirk
bones is w e a k but doesnāt submit without some protests (ājim, iām a doctor, not a taste testerā āokay but your wound needs time to heal, sit down damn itā) that jim easily casts away because heās so damn pretty stubborn
then jim drags them to his room where he has whatever alcohol it is stashed away and they drink until bones forgives him for pulling him away from work long enough to get drunk and maybe cuddle a little until he falls asleep (jim wakes him up the next morning with a kiss on the nose, but bones is a grump when heās hung over and tiredly shoots jim and himself with a hypospray and jim knows the fun is over)
jimās method with spock is slightly different
because, of course, breaks are illogicalā¢ļø and he didnāt go through all that starfleet training crap with dumb humans to take breaks
the first time jim tries itās justĀ ācaptain, are you attempting to sway me from my duties as first officerā and jim has been trying for the past three hours so he just,, gives up
the next time, heās got a game planā¦sorta
spock is a slut for chess
the hardest part was jim trying to get him away from the main deck long enough to move a single pawn
once heād gotten that down, he was golden
spock starts having this obsession with trying to beat jim
because somehow this guy justā¦wins Ā every Ā Ā time?
spock thinks heās cheating at one point, like he did with the kobayashi maru test (they donāt like to bring that up)
this vulcan gets sO frustrated and confused when jim seems to win almost effortlessly every time
so thats when he starts practicing on his own time
when heās not first-officering, of course
usually he plays against scotty, but sometimes chekov and sulu too, if theyāre around
bones refuses to play but likes to watch spock and jim go at it sometimes
sometimes spock starts asking jim to playā¦you knowā¦when itās logically convenient
the first time he wins, itās super intense and practically the entire crew is crowded around them and they erupt into cheers and jim canāt help a proud smile because finallY
after that its just a habit to play chess if they can pull away long enough
getting jim to stop for a breath is a wee bit more difficult
(unless itās him initiating it,, obviously)
sometimes bones will call him in for a check up when thereās no need for one, just so he can wind down for a bit and talk
jim catches onābones tends to do it when jimās stressed
bones usually knows itāll lead to jim offering them a drink
if itās particularly bad, heāll offer
spock sees when jim tires; sees it in his muffled yawns as they play chess or his tired smile when spock tries to say something specifically vulcan-like to lift jimās mood
sometimes heāll simply rest a hand on jimās shoulder and tell him heās got the chair for the next few hours (his way of saying to go get some rest)
other times he initiates playful conversation just to see him crack a smile, cause sometimes thatās all jim really needs
bones and spockās way of getting each other to relax a bit is by bickering
(weird, i know, just hear me out)
spockās incessant need to be right and bonesā stubbornness leads to particularly fascinating conversation, as much as either of them would hate to admit
after a stressful day compiled of injuries from away missions and not following the prime directive, both of them could definitely use a break
on the rare occasion that they agree about something, the outcome is more fascinating than the bickering
because, despite their differences, theyāre both science officers
occasionally bones humors spock with a story about a patient heād gotten that day and their peculiar injury
or he feeds spockās inquiries about earth people and things they say or do (lol mostly its about jim)
spock also can be a good conversationalist, although the beginning may be a bit rocky
he likes talking about space and the stars and planets and maybe heāll tell bones about the odd and fascinating creature he saw on the away mission today and basiCally their talks can be calming if theyāre tired enough
the best part is when it turns into a comfortable silence, and the silence turns into soft breathing because bones has his head on spockās shoulder and the vulcan is quite okay with it
