"I am too old for this" - Nick Fury whenever something mildly inconveniencing happens.
To be fair, he’s been saving the world since his early 20s and 40+ years of that shit will take a toll on a body.
But he still kicks ass, even while complaining. And if anyone else points out that he’s nearing “retirement age”, they get this:
(which is btw my favorite gif of all time. :D)
1x22 / 4x19
Nick Fury (2017) #001
Starter Call!
like this or IM me to plot. If you like this I’ll come up with a short starter for your muse and Nick. Just that simple!
Said During D&D Starter Meme
Wine isn’t flammable enough. You need vodka or something.
Am I allowed to dance on her grave?
Look, I’m all for destroying things, but…
Are you still on the ceiling?
Are you /more/ or /less/ undead than [name]?
If you’re still alive by then, go ahead.
I will explain nothing. You must discover.
I know it was rude, okay?
I’m not happy about this, okay? I don’t like hurting people!
How many miles per hour is that?
There’s blood everywhere!
What’s a good song for this situation?
Will you seek revenge?
This is a family-friendly establishment, sir.
This is the third time you’ve run away over the course of this fight, if you’re keeping track.
That doesn’t count as a costume, it’s just a hat.
He’s all talk. He’s never actually killed you.
Wait, do you not have any money?
Well, maybe the demon has devoured multiple people.
He is not a scaredy cat.
None of us came here to fight a vampire.
What happened? Where are you?
Who did she get murdered by?
The vampire killed her, but not with his mouth.
You killed her! You set the fire she died in!
Doesn’t he know that tweets can be 140 characters?
Are there any other figures of authority?
This entire town wants to kill me, so I owe them nothing.
Wolves aren’t necessarily considered townsfolk. Can they vote?
Who do you report to?
These people don’t like us.
I don’t know what we can even do to help them.
That’s not my name and you know it.
This is by far the worst contract I have ever been on.
Now everybody wants to steal!
I’m not a thief, I’m a lady. And an arsonist.
It’s a bonfire.
Is the frog a good guy or a bad guy?
I feel like we’ve accomplished nothing.
amazinghawkeye:
“Yeah, alright, fair enough.” Clint reaches down to tilt the passenger seat back a little bit, but not enough that moving quickly if he has to would be an issue. “Try not to get us killed.”
It definitely isn’t the worst situation they’ve ever been in, but the number of people that Clint would trust enough to try to get some sleep is very, very low. Nick is one of the few that makes the list.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll get you home safe and sound.” He chuckles as he sets the cruise control on the car just below the speed limit. There isn’t much traffic and just the annoying DJ and slightly less annoying music to keep him company. Well, that and Clint snoring. Just a little.
It’s a couple hours before he notices that the black SUV behind them isn’t going around, despite the speed at which is came up on them. He nudges Clint. “Might be time to take that shotgun position literally.”
amazinghawkeye:
Clint twists around in the passenger seat of the vehicle to peer out the back window, watching the black smoke curl up into the sky after the explosion.
“Because that’s not going to draw attention,” he teases, but he’s already crossing one foot over the other, stretching out as much as his 6′3″ frame is able to in the front seat, settling in for a nap.
Nick won’t hesitate to wake him up if he’s needed.
Nick can’t help but laugh. “That’s why we’re not there anymore. Keep ‘em busy there and we get a head start.” His smirk doesn’t fade. “I’ll get you up when we stop for gas again.”
He turns the radio on low, just to keep some noise in the car other than the road and it keeps him awake.
amazinghawkeye:
“Wouldn’t hate getting a quick nap in,” Clint concedes. It’s best for them to catch some sleep where they can because there’s always the possibility that things could go south, and he wants to have some rest under his belt in the event that happens.
He casts another glance over his shoulder and then slides into the front seat of the car. “Aye aye, boss.”
Nick shakes his head as he reaches under the dash and finds the right wires to get the car going. “Well, get some sleep then. I think I can handle things for a little while.” He sat up, pulling the car back on the highway and staying just under the speed limit.
He glances at his watch. “Three... two...” the explosion is impressive, even at this distance.
It’s been a long, long time || Steve & Nick
bruised-soldier-heart:
Steve stays quiet throughout the chuckle and Fury’s next words, his gaze on the table in front of him. He knows that the chuckle isn’t an attack in any way, so he doesn’t mind. And maybe he’s got a point, Steve’s not sure. He doesn’t see himself above others in questions of morality, but he firmly stands by his beliefs. And Steve knows that’s not something everyone can or is willing to do.
‘Is it always that simple for you?’
That… well.
Steve draws a deep breath and reaches for the glass to be able to drink a gulp, giving himself time for the answer. Eventually he puts it back down and meets Fury’s eyes again.
“I can’t remember the last time anything was ‘simple’.” He pauses for a moment and adds then, “But I know what you mean.”
“I can’t remember the last time anything was ‘simple’.”
That gets a real smile from Nick. “I can. And I was a hell of a lot younger and things made a hell of a lot more sense.” He shakes his head. “I’m going to say... ‘86. New recruit spun my head something fierce and I never looked back.” His smile grows fond for a moment.
“But I know what you mean.”
Nick nods. “I’m sure you do. Its always easier when you know who you’re fighting. Almost feels like a luxury sometimes.”
Battle Scars #6
I was bored so I decided to do a new icon for my tumblr aaand this came out.
amazinghawkeye:
He takes in their immediate surroundings, casting a glance around for anyone watching them, but there’s no one close by. A tiny grin starts to creep across his features at Nick’s question. “Is this one of those situations where you’re implying that you want to drive without actually saying you want to drive?”
Nick lets out a small chuckle at that and shrugs his shoulder. “No. I just figured you might want to ride shotgun for a while. You know I have no problem with that.” He smirked and made quick work of the locks on the car door. “Lets go before anybody notices anything. Or before anything goes off.”
It’s been a long, long time || Steve & Nick
bruised-soldier-heart:
‘Is that more of that 20/20 hindsight?’
Steve just looks at Fury for a moment, even though he doesn’t hesitate, knowing his answer even before the question is finished.
“No. That’s what it’s always been.”
The thing is, the conversation might not be easy, and they might not be on the same wave length with a lot of things. But it’s not like Steve absolutely cannot understand Fury’s point of view. It’s just a very thin line they’re walking.
So he listens quietly to what else Fury has to say, finishing his food while still conveying his attention by glancing over at him every so often.
Eventually Steve leans back in his chair and crosses his arms over his chest.
“We all do what we believe is right. There’s nothing else we can go by, really.” And he knows that Fury has good intentions, certainly after what happened only days ago.
“No. That’s what it’s always been.”
Nick can’t help but chuckle a little as he takes another sip of his drink. It’s a self-deprecating laugh but he’s not sure that’s going to come across. He’s not sure he cares either. “Staying strong in that is beyond a lot of folks, Cap.” He sighs. “All the weird shit... gods, magic, aliens. It’s enough to make somebody question a lot of what they think they know.”
“We all do what we believe is right. There’s nothing else we can go by, really.”
“Is it always that simple for you?” It comes out with genuine interest. “I don’t know. Sometimes you do things you don’t regret but you get something you know you don’t deserve out of it... maybe you can only get lucky like that so much before somebody tries to kill you.” He smirks and shakes his head. “I miss the days when we could just deal with the regular human bad guys. Punch ‘em in the face and call it a day.”
Hazy Shade of Winter || Nick Fury & Natasha Romanoff
spiderwebbedlullaby:
‘This isn’t a work thing. I’m your boss, sure, but I’m your friend too, Natasha. I’m just looking out for you.’
Now, finally, Natasha drops her gaze and looks down into her lap, her shoulders relaxing a little. She’s not going to admit it, but she needed the reminder - that he’s on her side, always has been. And that he probably really is just worried.
‘I appreciate that. I’ll see what I can realistically sneak out to you from the archives. There’s not much but if you want it, I can cover your trail.’
“Thanks,” she finally says, making herself raise her eyes to meet his again. And it’s not like her sense of self-preservation just went to sleep - she knows how dangerous it will possibly be to go after this man, and she can’t explain it, but she knows this is something she has to do anyway. She still forgets sometimes that there are people now who understand that.
Natasha wouldn’t have asked him for this, wouldn’t have wanted to be in that kind of debt. But with him offering, she won’t say no.
“It’ll be a good start.”
“It’ll be a good start.”
He smirks a little, a small warm chuckle filling the room. “I think I can do better than good.” He hopes that lightens her mood a little. She should be resting and he knows it but he also knows what it’s like, laying in a bed with nothing to do but spin what little information you have. It’s too easy to drive yourself crazy that way. So he gives her what he can.
“Get some rest. Barton will try to kick my ass if he knows I’m keeping you from healing up properly.” He reaches over, telegraphing his moves a little more than usual before patting her hand. “Don’t get me in trouble.”
It’s been a long, long time || Steve & Nick
bruised-soldier-heart:
Steve is chewing on a new bite of food when Fury replies, so that gives him a few moments where he doesn’t have to reply right away.
‘I think you have a hard time applying it to decisions other people make that you don’t agree with sometimes.’
Does he? Maybe. Steve has a very firm idea of things that are okay and things that aren’t. And, of course, sometimes people don’t agree with that.
That’s possibly a mute point to talk about, because it’s just going to lead them in circles. So Steve sighs eventually, but before he can say anything, Fury goes on.
‘Tell me something. If you could have brought Barnes back. If you could have done anything to do it even if you crossed a million lines to get it done, would you have done it? That kind of los, Captain… that kind of hurt doesn’t listen to right and wrong and I think you damn well know it.’
“Anything?” Something twists in Steve’s chest, suddenly forcefully reminded of that moment, the hours after. How sharp his grief had been, how consuming. Of his terror when he realized that Bucky was, after all, still alive.
He makes himself swallow that down.
“No. There are limits.”
Just days ago he had needed to make sure those three helicarriers were linked, no matter what. Only after that, when all those people were safe, he had allowed himself to do what his heart wanted.
Nick sighs heavily, again trying to push back his feelings on this subject. He’s never been good about being open with this stuff and he knows it. On top of that, he’s not really good at trusting people with anything, let alone his darkest moments.
“No. There are limits.”
Nick nods, not really surprised. “Is that more of that 20/20 hindsight?” He shakes his head a little, digging a little more food out of one of the containers. “Lines get blurry... they tell you they’ve nearly got it. That this is the last time. That it’s working and you think to yourself that’ll be it. No more but you can’t bring yourself to push the button in the end... to stop it all because that means--”
He stuffs more food in his mouth buying himself a little time to come up with something else to say. “Or maybe I’m just not as good a person as somebody like you is, in the end.” He tries to laugh it off a little but that’s been a sinking feeling he’s had for a long time.
Reporter AU
Nick had been EiC at Shield Daily for years when the company went under. He and a few colleagues started a news site shortly thereafter because, he said “People need to hear something true now and then.”
He took up writing again when they started the site. The hate mail is intense but he’s been called worse. He’d rather get it sent to him than his staff and he knows online they’ve all got targets on the back of their heads.
He interviewed President Johnson once at the beginning of his career and almost got blacklisted for it. The EiC at the time, M. E. Carter (”I wouldn’t have the job if they knew it was Peggy, dear.” though she did eventually reveal the truth to the world.) bailed him out and stood by his piece.
They site receives the occasional “anonymous” donation and tech pieces from a source unnamed. He’s sure it’s Howard Stark’s kid though. He writes like he speaks and it’s very readable so he keeps putting “Anonymous” on the site.
His foreign correspondent is a peach and he adores her. Even if he’s sure at least twice, she’s killed somebody for a story. She just smiles and shrugs when he jokes about it.
Daemon AU
Eliza is a California Red-sided garter snake and she spends most of her time curled around Nick’s forearm under his sleeve. Most people never see her and this has led to some wild stories about Nick Fury not having a daemon.
She gets along shockingly well with a certain agent’s Jack Russell Terrier daemon named Ruby. It’s not every day you see a little dog and snake hanging out but it does happen. Phil is endlessly amused by this.
Nick, Eliza and a very exasperated Agatha Harkness (and her even more adjudicated Elf Owl) did their best to keep Ruby from disappearing when they were trying to bring Phil back from the dead. Nick is still convinced that both efforts were absolutely worth it and he is reminded of that every time he sees the two of them passed out on the couch together.
When Nick was injured and Maria put the protocol into effect that he was dead, Eliza hid, wrapped around his ankle so that no one would suspect anything. She was almost caught by Natasha’s daemon but switched ankles just in time.
Eliza never warmed up to Alex’s daemon--a raccoon named Gretchen--and Nick could never figure out why. He knows now.
