they call sakuko igarashi "the girl with the highest self-esteem of all time"

ik there's discussion re: the veracity of what's in her dark shrine journals; tbh i don't think they contradict any of her character. she knows that she scares people sometimes; she likes the role of miko because it counters these negative elements of her self-image. she's ultimately a big ol sweetie imo but her dark impulses have been reinforced from specific places & she struggles with them! (tho i don't think she actually did That to a rabbit; the line comes immediately after she berates herself for being "dark and sad and mean," so to me it reads more as trying to further degrade herself to the reader.) to me the journals are less "lies" than "incomplete truths" *maybe* presented in a heightened / non-literal form, which i think fits with the general arc of pulling back hinako's perspective on everyone's flaws & struggles. sakuko is the most obviously dependent, but also the first (only? it's debatable re: rinko ig) friend to say "i messed up, do what makes you happy i'll support you" without strings attached. idk i think it undercuts something in her character to say "no she'd never even think mean things in private journals" when both her and hinako's accounts of events make it pretty clear, to me at least, that sakuko's insecurities - stoked by hinako's demonstrated lack of connection to her - blew up the relationship prematurely. this is a compelling type of character

sakuko copes with the misery of love and betrayal, as hinako struggles with the world of men. there are no happy romances here.

this is not necessarily a sequel to my prior fic, but it is something like a companion piece.

if you're used to reading ruxy fics you know what you're getting, but actually this is my first time writing a regular 'high school yuri' scenario… i tried to work in some ideas about yuri and class s and how people's perspectives affect what they see as possible. i hope you enjoy!
