Lex closed her eyes for a moment, already quite done with the conversation that had only just begun. “It’s pretty much the only way to speak to you.” She stated, meeting her brother’s gaze. “And you didn’t answer the question.”

Reid placed his hand against his chest and feigned a hurt look as he gazed at her. “That hurts Alex. That really hurts. I honestly thought we could move past all that animosity.” You could hear the sarcasm laced in his words as he shook his head in fake sadness. “I’m not sure I want to answer your question if you’re going to be rude.”

He was beginning to test her patience, not once had she found herself this close to snapping, even during their entire time together. He was no longer than one she could laugh it off with, she felt threatened, by his words and by his actions. “Mind your tone.” She warned, a snarl on her lips. “I did what I had to do, I do not expect you to understand that but I had to protect myself and you!” She shouted, regretting once she had. “Work through what? Being a mudblood is hardly something I can work through—” She stopped, eyes wide, and full of regret.

“Or what? What are you going to do Rosa? Are you going to hurt me?” He laughed sarcastically. “You can try of course. Though let’s be honest, it can’t hurt anymore than what you’ve already caused me. I think I’m pretty immune to it all now.” His words weren’t a lie, since her death or what he was lead to believe was her death, the young wizard had pretty much closed himself off to feelings and any kind of pain. Though the words that followed happened to be enough to cause him to take a step back in shock, hurt filling his eyes as he looked at her. “You.. I--” He couldn’t quite get his words out. It wasn’t her revelation that had him shocked. “That’s why you left? You thought I’d care about that? That I’d what? That I would hurt you?” His voice was no longer raised to her, not having the energy to do so. “I didn’t care about that. Not with you. I never did.” He’d known for years about her blood status but just never chose to talk about it.

She had to remain silent, knowing the alternative was to tell him the truth and that was far more harrowing for her. She could cope with him hating her, at least it meant that she could see him, even in anger. If she was exposed, she’d be hung for being a traitor– that was far worse to envisage. “You need to stop being so dramatic, I did what I had to do.” She growled, pushing her hair from her face. She stood her ground, even if it meant hurting him– she’d do what she had to do. “Danger was coming, I couldn’t sit about and wait for the inevitable, I had to save myself!” She shouted out of anger, shaking her head.

“Seriously you’re calling me dramatic? You’re one to talk aren’t you, I mean remind me again which one of us faked their death.” He rolled his eyes and moved past her, needing to put space between the two as his annoyance with her grew. “Really, that’s the excuse you’re going for? Merlin, you’re a Death Eater. What did you think was going to happen? You could have told me. Nice to know how much you thought about our relationship to not even give us a chance to work through it together.”

It was frustrating, that he would never truly see or understand her point of view. Life was cruel to them, their happiness diminished and she had been the cause. She had seen no other alternative, if he had known, they would not be together, and it would have spread to the other Death Eater’s—- she would not be alive to this day. “There was no other alternative.” She shouted back, hands knotting int her hair in frustration. She felt anger pulsating through her, moving to corner him against the wall. “You’re pushing your luck, Reid.”

“Alternative to what? What was so bad that you had to resort to that if not to escape me?” He questioned as his voice began to raise slightly. That calmness he usually kept was beginning to slip the longer the conversation carried on. He could see what she was trying to do, he’d watched her do it so many times before to others. Backing them against things to give her the upper hand but he wasn’t about to let that happen now. There was very little that intimidated him since they’d left school. Instead, he met her toe for toe and instead of moving back he chose to move forward. “I always was good at that. Give it your best shot, Rosa. You don’t intimidate me. I’m not one of the little runts that you manage to scare so easily.”

She truly believed the man she had fallen for had gone, and this had been her own doing. “You didn’t know me at all if you think I left to get away from you.” She spat back, eyes moving to look away from him. “I never intended to scare you, you already know what I am capable of.” She threatened, sighing a little. She only wished things were different, but he wouldn’t accept her as a mudblood, so this was the only way.

“Oh, and I suppose to think otherwise when you fake your death to leave instead of just ending things? Instead of talking to me or find some kind of way to let me know that you’re okay, you leave me thinking you’re dead” He scoffed not willing to take the blame or feel guilty for it all. “Oh please, you may intimidate everyone else but it was never going to work on me. Like you said, I know what you’re capable of.”

Sat on a table outside the town’s smallest cafe, Lex was working in her notebook. The pencil in her hand moved quickly, jotting down lyrics onto the page – and erasing them just as fast in some cases. She hummed to herself, biting her lip whenever the melody vanished from her mind as she stumbled over potential lyrics. However, when a shadow loomed over her paper, she closed her eyes in frustration as she moved her gaze to look up to the person who had disturbed her. “What do you want?” 

“Now, now Alex. Is that anyway to speak to your big brother?” He questioned sarcastically as he stood peering down at her with a smirk. Their meeting was inevitable and with it being such a small town, it was always going to happen sooner rather than later. With that in mind, Reid had purposely seeked his little sister out in hopes that the meeting would happen on his terms rather than letting any surprises throw him off guard.

“Why wouldn’t you want the credit for that?” Ruby questioned clearly confused by the idea.

“Because it will cause more trouble if someone else gets the blame and they have no idea what they’ve done and then they’re accused of lying?” He pointed out as if it were the most obvious thing ever.

“If I were to theoretically push someone off the roof of one buildings or leave them abandoned in the old shed in the park, who would be the best person to put the blame on?“ Theoretically of course.

She was growing impatient with him, it were as if he resented her with every part of his being, which she could only believe to be true. It was easy to understand, after she left him, it was all her own doing. “I’d prefer none of the above, as you know, the more violent ones will only leave you worse off.” She threatened, eyes locking with his, rolling shortly after. She would never hurt him, but threats were her only defence now. “I should have never come back here.” She mumbled to herself with a shake of her head, sighing as she did.

Reid could see he was beginning to annoy the woman but he couldn't say he cared much. "Well, then I guess you just get my resting bitch face because I reserve my happy smirks for people who don’t fake their deaths to get away from me." He replied shrugging. "Threats? Really. Please Rosa, you don't scare me." He told her shaking his head. "I agree."

“My god– you’re so uptight, do you ever smile?” Rosa groaned, eyes rolling as she spoke. This was not the man she remembered, but she also knew she tarnished their relationship the day she left. If only he knew why she did it. “If your face is expressing what you’re thinking, it’s very bad things.”

“Smiling? No. No, not at all. Smirking on the other hand, now that I’m a master of. Tell me which kind would you like? I’ve got the sarcastic kind, the condescending, the arrogant one, the I’m going to kill you and bury your body where no one will find it one, or of course there’s the I’ve bludgeoned you with a beaters bat five times over in my head but I’ll have you think I’m just teasing smirk. Personally, I’m a fan of the sarcastic one. Though i have been told I’ve mastered the you’re an arse one too.” He listed off as he pretended to count them on his fingers.

She huffed a sigh, arms folding across her chest. He made her incredibly angry, and he had always been able to get on her nerves. Nothing had changed, not really. “I don’t need to read minds when it’s displayed across your whole damn face.”

“Now, now, Rosa. Here I thought you knew me best. Apparently not.” He tutted sarcastically with a roll of his eyes. “You should know that just because something is expressed on my face does not mean that is what I’m thinking.”

Heaving a sigh, Rosa turned her gaze to him, knowing nothing she said would be of any use to their relationship, not anymore. “I’m not depicting how you feel, I know I have no right to do so.” She defended, folding her arms across her chest. “You’re making it very clear how you feel.”

“It definitely feels that way. I mean the last time I checked you weren’t a mind reader and you hadn’t mastered Legilimency. So I’m not sure how you can claim to know whether I care or not.”

She remained silent, eyes fixated on the boy she could only remember as heartache. “I don’t expect you to care, nor to make conversation. We both know you despise me.”

“Well I’ve never been one to care much about people’s expectations. Don’t pretend to think that you know me Rosa, you lost that right a long time ago. You don’t know how I think or how I feel, so don’t try to tell me my own feelings.”

“Why would I give you an answer when you clearly do not care?” Rosa replied, brows raising as she exhaled a sigh. “What I do with my time is none of your business.”

"If I didn't care, I wouldn't have asked would I?" He pointed out with a raised brow. "Fine, have it your way. I was only trying to have a conversation with you." The male shrugged nonchalantly

The comment struck something within her, and she almost winced. However, she had to pretend not to be phased. He could never know her true reason for leaving. “Ouch, that almost hurt.” She rolled her eyes, lowering her gaze so that it did not meet his.

“For that to happen, you’d actually have to show emotion Rosa. I noticed how you didn’t exactly dignify it with an answer though.” Even though the words fell from his lips with such an attitude, he couldn’t help but feel slightly guilty.

It was true to say the words that left Reid’s lips stung Rosa deeply, but it was not something she would show him. She had to pretend it did not bother her, knowing feelings being involved was not something she could allow. “I’m hurt— never mind, I’ll find someone else.”

“Now why doesn’t that surprise me. Tell me Rosa, is that what you did while you were gone?” His tone of voice hadn’t changed, he refused to give her that satisfaction of potentially finding out just how much her leaving him hurt.

“Are these really necessary?” Owen asked raising a brow, gesturing to bonds around his wrists.

“Probably not but we just thought, why not. After all it obviously makes you more uncomfortable.” He smirked.
