Alloys: Mushet steel

Considered to be the first tool steel ever invented, Mushet steel was created by Robert Mushet in 1868. It is an air hardening steel (also known as self hardening steel), called such because it hardens in air, without the need for a quenchant such as water or oil.

Tool steel is a general term for those steels which have high hardness and are abrasion and deformation resistant. They are named such because they are used to make tools such as those used in shaping other materials through cutting, pressing, extruding, or other methods. Tool steels are often broken down into various groups: water hardening, cold work, shock resistant, high speed, hot work, and special purpose. Among these, Mushet steels, and other air hardening steels, are considered to be cold work tool steels.

Mushet steel does not have an exact set composition, but samples had around 2-4% manganese (2.5% was typical), anywhere from 4-12% tungsten (8 or 9% was typical), and around 1.5-2.5% carbon. Much of Mushet steel’s favorable properties come from the formation of tungsten carbides within the steel. Though Mushet steel was not popular around the time of its discovery, decades later research by Frederick Winslow Taylor popularized tool steels and led to the creation of high speed steels.
