RIP Libby German and Abby Williams;

february 13, 2017 in delphi, indiana, united states. friends thirteen year old abby and fourteen year old libby were last seen hiking a popular outdoor trail near deer creek. when they failed to be at their appointed pick up location, the girls were reported missing by their families. on february 14, their bodies and personal belongings were found less than a mile away from the bridge. when authorities looked through the contents of libby’s phone, they found video and audio of a man following the girls. he can be heard saying “guys, down the hill” in the clip available to the public. this man is believed to the girls’ killer and authorities are still searching for him. libby and abby’s murders remain unsolved.

The Covina Christmas Massacre

On December 24, 2008, 45-year-old Bruce Jeffrey Pardo arrived at his recently divorced wife’s family Christmas party dressed as Santa Claus. Within minutes, nine people had been murdered and three had been injured.

The Ortega family, located in Covina, California, were celebrating Christmas and playing poker when the doorbell rang. When Bruce’s 8-year-old niece unluckily answered the door, she was shot in the face by Bruce who was carrying four 9mm semi-automatic handguns and a wrapped package containing a homemade flamethrower.

After Bruce shot the family, some execution style, he unwrapped the flamethrower and began spraying racing fuel gasoline around the home. Neighbors noticed the flames and began dialing 911 telling them, “Come immediately! They’re burning someone’s house.” A lieutenant who arrived at the scene said, “When I arrived, to describe it as apocalyptic would be accurate.” The fire rose to over 50 feet and took 80 firefighters almost two hours to extinguish. The bodies within were so badly charred that they had to be identified by dental records. After the home was set ablaze, Bruce changed out of the Santa suit and drove his rental car to his brother’s house about 30 miles away.

Despite having a plane ticket to Canada and $17,000 in cash cling-wrapped to his body, suggesting a getaway plan, Bruce then shot himself in his brother’s home. Police later found his rental car had been rigged with a detonation device that would’ve exploded with gun powder when opened. Later, at his home, police also found what was described as a, “virtual bomb factory,” containing a high-octane fuel tank, semiautomatic handguns and a Benelli M2 tactical shotgun.

Among those killed were Sylvia Ortega Pardo, Bruce’s ex-wife, her mother Alicia Ortega, her father Joseph Ortega, two of Sylvia’s brothers, three sisters, and Sylvia’s nephew, 17-year-old Michael Ortiz. At least thirteen children were orphaned after the murders. Luckily, the 8-year-old child who answered the door survived her wounds, as well as a woman who survived by jumping out of a second story window.

RIP Danielle van Dam;

february 1, 2002 in sabre springs, california, united states. seven year old danielle was put to bed at 10:30 on the night of february 1. when her mother returned home at 2:00 in the morning on february 2, she noted that the family’s security alarm was going off, lights were on inside the house, and the garage door was uncharacteristically open. at 3:30, danielle’s father woke up to the alarm going off, and the back door open. both parents believed that danielle was still in her room, though neither checked on her. she was reported missing after 9:30 in the morning on february 2. when searches were performed, danielle’s blood was found near and inside david westerfield’s mobile home, parked in the woods. danielle had sold him girl scout cookies three days before her disappearance and had been inside his home before. david claimed to have gone on a spur of the moment drive to the desert on the morning that danielle was reported missing. on his route home, he dropped off linens and a jacket to be dry cleaned. these items would prove to have danielle’s blood on them. david was arrested for danielle’s supposed kidnapping on february 22. danielle’s body was found on february 27 of the same year, naked and too decomposed to tell a cause of death. david was sentenced to death for danielle’s murder and remains in prison.

RIP Max Shacknai;

july 11, 2011 in coronado, california, united states. six year old max was at home with his father’s girlfriend rebecca zahau and her sister xena. under no supervision, max tripped over a toy or the family pet and fell down a flight of stairs. he injured his spine and head and never awoke from unconsciousness. max passed away on july 16 due to brain damage. investigators believed that max had actually been suffocated before his lethal fall. in spite of this, authorities ultimately ruled max’s death an accident.

Emmett Till’s funeral was held on September 6, 1955. Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley called Chicago Defender, one of the country’s leading black newspaper, and Jet magazine to cover the story. With the help of Medgar Evers, the state NAACP secretary, Mamie decided to have an open casket funeral. That decision changed history.

From Mamie’s memoir :

“I knew that I could talk for the rest of my life about what happened to my baby, I could explain it in great detail, I could describe what I saw laid out there on that slab at A.A. Rayner’s place, one piece, one inch, one body part at a time. I could do all of that and people would still not get the full impact… They had to see what I had seen. The whole nation had to bear witness to this. I knew that if they walked by that casket, if people opened the pages of Jet magazine or the Chicago Defender, if other people could see it with their own eyes, then together we would find a way to express what we had seen.”
