status: closed starter for @loising location: a bowling alley after 8 pm
Diana had procured their drinks and was headed back to their table when a small child whizzed past her, almost causing her to spill everything. She hadn’t expected to be met with such a large crowd when she’d agreed to Lois’ proposal, making the scene in front of her all the more baffling . . . and frightening. "You didn’t tell me this place was so popular.” She had to speak louder than she would’ve liked to be heard over the music and children hollering in the lane next to theirs. It didn’t irk her per se; Diana was just accustomed to quieter settings. Following her time in the war, she cherished the rare moments of peace she’d find when her heart was still and her mind could momentarily forget about all of the hurt this world had caused her in such a brief span.
She was glad to have found Lois when she did. The woman had become a good friend and support system to her at a time when her real home was out of reach. It could explain why she’d decided to come--against her better judgment--or why she currently found herself dodging eight-year-olds for a bowling ball most of them probably couldn’t even lift. “If I’d known it was this hectic, I would’ve suggested we go wine-tasting instead. Not even Artemis could endure the wrath of these children.” Upon securing her ball, Diana collapsed into her seat in a huff, recalling her untouched drink on the table before consuming it almost all in one go. The instant effect it had elicited a delighted sigh of relief, her hand reaching over to touch the “start” button on the monitor. “Well then, Ms. Lane, shall we bowl?”

who: natasha romanoff + open where: a city street, new year’s day
New York city on New Year’s Day was a strange place: half-alive, half-awake, the moment between exhalation and inhalation. In the buildings overhead, people slept, or they hadn’t yet fallen asleep, and were dreaming of the new year. On the street, stores will still shuttered, their metal grates locked shut against the concrete. It was quiet, for New York, but it was New York, so it was never quiet.
Natasha pulled her jacket closer around her, head down, walking off the sting of a few too many glasses of wine the night before. She noticed her tail immediately, of course. They were a clumsy tail, all heavy footfalls and loud breathing. She gave them the courtesy of a full city block anyway, to let them think they were doing something, before she turned around. “Can I help you?”
For most, the new year symbolized new beginnings. It was a time for resolutions and personal growth, in hopes that the version of you today would not be the same person in another year’s time. For Diana, however, the notion of change seemed impractical. Where did she find the will to start over when for the last thousands of years, she’d spent every waking moment molding herself into the finest and most skilled warrior, only for that part of her life to be over now? It left her with a sense of aimlessness as she filled her days with procuring lost artifacts and adding pieces to her collection that were reminiscent of home.
New York, to her, was not home. Though she’d come to like it well enough, especially on quiet days like this. The streets were restful, most pedestrians cheerful after the holidays as they offered up a light smile as she passed. On the other side of the street, a rather captivating woman had caught her attention, followed by a hooded figure tight on her heels. Diana knew all too well of the feeling, often preyed upon for her beauty instead of her tenacity or intellect. But she was not some doe made of sweet nothings and silk; she was forged steel, unbreakable even to the gods. “I believe that’s the lady’s nice way of telling you to move along,” she interjected, arms crossed tightly as her heels clicked onto the sidewalk. The stranger’s eyes darted between the two of them before he was off, mumbling something under his breath. “Not a friend of yours, I assume?” She asked with arched brows, a faint smile curling on her lips. “I hope I wasn’t too forward. You seemed to have it handled, it’s just... force of habit. I apologize.”
