Translating the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Fanbook! Article 18
This one might actually be my favourite - and completely rewired some of my opinions on Miles' characterisation. Also some new Steel Samurai lore!
As always, Phoenixâs office is busy. Mayaâs leading the excitement, but who should show up but Prosecutor Edgeworth and the character thatâs all the rage right now?!Â
Maya: Thatâs it, go for it! Steel Samurai slap!Â
Phoenix: Hey, Maya. Could you please try and keep it down a bit, just for today?Â
Maya: Hmm. Iâm afraid youâll have to give up on that idea, just for today. Itâs the ââSteel Samurai: 155 Episode Marathon Day!â
Phoenix: Ugh⌠I have a mountain of tedious paperwork piling up. Iâve been so busy, I havenât eaten anything since this morning.Â
Maya: Donât worry. Lunch will be here soon.
Pearl: Kyaaaah! Mystic Mayaaaaaa!Â
Maya: W-whatâs wrong, Pearly?!Â
Pearl: Charley⌠Charley is all limp!Â
Phoenix: Charley⌠Ah. You mean Mia's houseplant?
Maya: You say limp⌠Uwah! Seriously! Heâs about to die!Â
Pearl: Could it be that this nutrient spray wasnât good for himâŚ?
Phoenix: Ah, stop - thatâs no good! Thatâs luminol spray.Â
Maya: Luminol? Whatâs that?
Phoenix: No, no. I only just used it last month!Â
Maya: Ah, you mean that chemical reagent that reacts with blood?
Pearl: Ugh⌠I sprayed it all over hoping it would make the leaves shiny.Â
Voice: Excuse me! Your order's here! ă
Maya: Oh, I guess lunch arrived.
Voice: Yes. Ten Chinese rice bowls.
Maya: Well, you see. It said âDiscount so huge itâll bleed us dry! 10 bowls for the price of 7!â on the flyer.
Pearl: âŚThatâs a pretty huge discount.
Maya: Letâs see how much bleeding there is. Here, with the luminol!Â
Phoenix: Letâs not. Weâll just end up exhausted and withered after eating it.Â
Maya: Youâre hungry, arenât you? Go ahead and eat up.
Phoenix: One of these is plenty!Â
Maya: Huh, whoâs that? Maybe another bowl of rice?
Phoenix: If they say theyâre offering 'something or other,' just send them away.Â
Voice: Itâs the police~. Iâve come to deliver your package~
Phoenix: Woah! Whatâs this huge white thing?!Â
Pearl: Kyah! Itâs face is scary!Â
Edgeworth: Itâs the 'Blue Bugger'.
Phoenix: EâŚâŚEdgeworth?!Â
Edgeworth: You also remember donât you? âŚ.âHimâ.Â
Phoenix: Ah⌠Of course. That case, huh?Â
Maya: If I remember Nickâs story, you suffered quite a bit of trouble because of him, right?
Edgeworth: However dubious, this 'Blue Bugger' has made quite the name for himself.
Maya: Uhm. We have another of those âsomething or othersâ as it is.
Phoenix: By the way, his name is âBlue Badgerâ. To be accurate.
Edgeworth: Hm⌠Perhaps youâre confusing him with some mascot or something.
Phoenix: Anyway, why bring him here?
Edgeworth: There was nowhere for him to go at the police station.
Edgeworth: Surely you could put him somewhere here? How about in place of that dead plant over there?
Maya: Charley isnât dead yet!Â
Edgeworth: Still⌠Somehow, I canât quite bring myself to throw this away.
Phoenix: Ah. Thatâs right, Detective Gumshoe made this?Â
Edgeworth: He said âI put all my blood, sweat, and tears into it, Pal!â
Maya: Hmm. Letâs see exactly how much blood went into it. With this luminol!Â
Phoenix: Thatâs not what that me-....Ah.
Pearl: Blood⌠is seeping out! Look, right there!Â
Edgeworth: Ah. That must be from when the detective sawed into his own finger.Â
Maya: About the saw by the way. It wasnât a jigsaw after all, was it?!Â
Phoenix: âŚ.I donât think thatâs the important part.
Pearl: Kyah! Thereâs blood here too?!Â
Edgeworth: Ah. That must be from when the detective smashed his own finger with a hammer - nail and all.
Maya: âŚâŚStories with blood arenât funny no matter how you put it, Prosecutor Edgeworth.Â
Phoenix: Anyway⌠this guyâs still dancing around like a maniac.
Edgeworth: I was thinking it would be a good fit for this officeâŚ
Pearl: Kyah! I wanted to clean up, but itâs blocking my way!
Maya: Ah! This is a really good scene, but I canât even see the TV!Â
Phoenix: Uwah! This guyâs perfectly in the way of both my paperwork and my rice bowl!Â
Edgeworth: Nobody can put an end to his dance⌠not until the battery runs out.
Phoenix: Take it home with you!Â
Edgeworth: However⌠If you consider it. Perhaps thatâs also true for us.
Edgeworth: Weâll keep dancing until our lives come to an end⌠Just like this 'Blue Bugger'.Â
Pearl: As expected of Mr Prosecutor!Â
Phoenix: âŚHey you. I think you should stop that habit of wrapping everything up with some zinger of a line.Â
Edgeworth: It canât be helped. I suppose Iâll return him to his creator.Â
Phoenix: While youâre at it, could you take some of these Chinese rice bowls with you?
Maya: I-is that alright? Thereâs a lot there.Â
Phoenix: Itâs cool. Heâs kind of like the âuniverseâ. In more ways than one.Â
Pearl: Help yourself to some of these too, Mr Prosecutor!
Edgeworth: Hm. Iâll help myself to a big serving...
Maya: There! Now weâre all friends who have been stuffed to the brim. In more ways than one. (1)
Phoenix: âŚWe donât need to have that kind of thing in common.
(1) Yeah no she literally says this, including the 'in more ways than one'. I don't know what to make of it. There's no reason I can think of where it wouldn't come off as an equally dirty joke in Japanese...
Yeah so. Miles putting on an (implied) cutesy voice and roleplaying as the blue badger to... amuse Phoenix, I suppose? And later doing an impression of Gumshoe... But mostly the cutesy voice thing. Rewired my brain.
I think there's also canon evidence of Miles being sentimental about objects - we can see this from his office, in keeping his first court outfit for so long, and all of his furniture through the years. It's fun to have some further written nods to this aspect of his character.
