Call of Cthulhu: A legendary cosmic horror property that originated from H.P. Lovecraftās 1928 short story. It has since evolved into a famous tabletop role-playing game (TRPG) where ordinary people investigate unspeakable mysteries, face terrifying cosmic, eldritch entities, and struggle to maintain their sanity. There are many interpretation and stories using this TRPG as a medium.

" Walse fidgeted his fingers, obviously reluctant but yet struck by curiosity all the same in regards to Yugamu's specialty. Although it had always been quite morbid ( in fact, even Walse found himself bewildered by his eccentric behaviour more often than not ) , this was one way to get to know him right ? After all, it was his job as an A.I. to make sure everyone felt welcome here at the main campus !

It's incredible how, no matter how many times they've fixed the damn thing, the cage certainly wasn't helping in containing the danger that is Eito Aotsuki. On one hand, the fix would've been very concerning especially when Sirei would pop in to suggest alternative motives to keep the former SDU member in lineā¦ but on the flipside, this ended up with the researcher providing his own alternative to keep Eito in line. With a collar attached around Eito's neck, there was certainly nothing to worry about now that his movement was measured and his life attached to the ones in control of the project.
Stillā¦ the thought of Johann suggesting that the idea was intentional for him to venture outside into the hallways had Eito respond with an amused smile. Hidden behind the sheepish expression he wore when he turned his head to respond in kind to Johann following from beside him.
"You insist on keeping me so close to you like this, Johann-kun. If I didn't know any better, I would say that you take a lot of enjoyment out of it. Compared to the work that you've been doing, you would rather entertain my request instead... Not that I'm in any position to complain. I'm being a good little prisoner, just like I promised."
Was he being truthful here with him? Well, the fact is that Eito willingly came to Johann and only wanted to spend time with him alone, and with Eito restricted so much- just his presence alone was enough to suggest that Eito is definitely being on his best behavior. So far.
"Haha... You're still bitter about that from me, huh? Johann-kun is indeed so kind to indulge in my suggestion. It makes me feel..."
A shudder, the SDU unit pushes up his glasses and sighs as he merely stares on ahead. His footsteps rhythmic while they both walked side by side... until they got to the rooftop where the night sky would greet them under the light of the pale moon satellite. The purple hue of the undying flames casting an ominous warm highlight around their horizon.
"Everyone else is asleep, so... I was wondering if you were ready to see what I wanted to show you. It's not that much of a secret, but... when was the last time you were able to watch the sky from up here? Uninterrupted from everyone's daily activities?"
ć ¤ć ¤" Now what kind of idea do you even have about me, Aotsuki ? I swear you're always putting words in my mouth... I'd say there's more evidence against you than myself. So, at this point, you're just coming to conclusions on your own. " Would he have to once again, bring up the fact that Eito rung his doorbell repeatedly until he answered ?
ć ¤ć ¤" Trust me, if you did the same, boring work everyday, you'd be willing to entertain even the most wildest scenarios just to get out of it. I'll admit you've been behaving at least. I wouldn't have agreed otherwise. " Well, maybe he was over-exaggerating for the most part but not like he wanted to give Eito the satisfaction of the idea that Johann wanted to spend time with him. If he fed his friend's ego too much then Johann wouldn't hear the end of it.
ć ¤ć ¤" Hmm... it's less that I'm still bitter and more like... you've still got a lot to work on with regaining our trust. Not like I need to lecture you about the matter though. " After all, Eito was already well-aware of his position at this academy.
ć ¤ć ¤As they arrived upon the rooftop, Johann's gaze was instinctively drawn to the bright glow of the pale "moon" hanging above the night sky; the remaining proof of humanity's existence on this star... He used to not think much of it but as they approached the end of these hundred days, Johann couldn't help but wonder if his feelings towards humanity had already changed. Compared to living up on the Artificial Satellite, he's somehow felt the most at home here with the SDU... Was it because he had people he finally held dear in this very place ?
ć ¤ć ¤Johann found himself taking a moment to breath in the cool, refreshing air of the night before he shifted his gaze towards Eito. " When you talk it up like that... it makes me wonder just what you have up your sleeve but let's see.... I don't really remember the last time I went stargazing ... so maybe it's been awhile. Things have been pretty hectic for the most part so I never even bothered to consider it.... What ? Were you hoping to stargaze with me ? That's pretty bold if you ask me... "
"Last Order" is the prequel story to Ranran, set on an entirely different world from Earth. This is the overall world view of how this setting functions. Its primary feature is that it's a sci-fi setting.

The Mother Blue Star
The main setting of this story. The Mother Blue Star is a distant alien planet inhabited by highly intelligent species not dissimilar to humans. Its surface is covered by water on nearly 70%, fostering an incredible diversity of life. Humanity has reigned as the planetās dominant species for thousands of years. Technological development has advanced at a staggering pace, and expansion into space is just around the corner.
At the same time, tradition places heavy emphasis on bloodlines, giving rise to a rigid class system and widespread discrimination based on lineage.
Though not specified in its entirety, the class system does indeed follow a structure similar to how authors would normally depict omegaverse (alpha, beta, omega) class systems. There exists a named, bottom rung class known as the 'slave-class'.
The slave-class are individuals born into a poor, disadvantaged social status where more often than not, they're looked down upon due to their social standing. Though they are likely granted human rights, the attitude on this planet is brutal to the point many of the higher-classed citizens abuse slave-class individuals because they believe it's their right to do so. They have always faced an unjust amount of discrimination and people have normalized this fact for centuries, thus giving birth to a world that values merit and class above all else. It is a cruel, merciless world to those not born into privilege.
The Story
This story sets its focus on the researchers that seek to ascend this star to rule this vast universe. In order to achieve this goal, a handful of brilliant researchers have been handpicked by the government and assigned to a national secret project known as the "Providence Development Plan."
Providence, is intended to be an ocular cybernetic device intended to replace one eye of its user. As of the present it's been in development for many years so the listed functions aren't exactly complete. It supposedly grants:
The ability to analyze targets at the molecular level and instantly understand their composition
The ability to analyze genetic information of all living organisms and 'edit' their genetic structure
The ability to connect to and operate nearby machines just by thinking about it
The user can examine and manipulate an image of a person viewed by Providence right down to the genetic level. There are complications however. The DNA seeds may begin replicating stored waveform patterns instead of the host's normal ones . This process can continue indefinitely, reconfiguring the host's DNA to match that of the waveform. These are among its functions, and when worn, it immediately constructs a neural system that fuses with the human body.
Providence is intended to carry the biodata of an entire planet and is capable of hosting a large-scale A.I to help not just carry world's worth of information but also is capable of creating an artificial world known as the "Dreamlands." which can replicate the data of a real world and host reality within this world.
The ultimate goal of Providence is to preserve this civilization, expanding humanityās sphere of survival ā thatās the purpose of this research.
This is the mission that all researchers have decreed to follow.
"With the goal of preserving the very civilization of humanity from our Mother Blue Star, we have undertaken the development of this "Eye of God."
This eye can not only analyze, interpret, record, and store the genetic structures and compositions of living beings and inorganic matter, but it can also edit them.
In other words, it can "redefine" any and all existence at will.
Through the completion of this "Eye of God", we shall ascend to a higher plane of being.
To store everything of this planet within a single sphere that fits in the palm of oneās handā
That is to say, we will be able to grasp the same amount of information as a whole planet possesses.
Someday soon, we will comprehend the entirety of this universe. And like this Eye of God, hold it all within the palm of our hands.
As the gods do, one day we shall become the rulers of a universe."
The Characters
Walse Laika
The primary NPC of this story.
He is a young prodigious slave-class researcher who somehow made his way up through the ranks through pure merit and backbreaking effort alone. He somehow managed to rise through as he was the one who invented the original concept to Providence, which was the only thing that landed him a place in the Providence Research Team but even that didn't stop his work to be stolen from the higher-ups. He is often met only with cold stares and contempt from those around him due to his social status. Due to that, he spends a lot of time on his own, simply working away with the goal of completing this project in order to help humanity.
The reason why he pursued this profession so desperately was because he loved this planet and the life upon it. He always wanted to unravel the mysteries of life through science and engineeringāto make a world where humans and all living beings can live better lives.
Johann Freider
An original character.
Johann is a well-respected researcher technician who landed a position in the Providence Development Team thanks to his high intellect but the main difference is that he was able to easily gain a spot thanks to his connection as the son of the project's director. He's a talented individual, highly regarded by his peers for his efforts but he often is met with misunderstanding as it was in reality, nepotism that allowed him to work on this project. Many people gossip about him and as a result, he often keeps people's at arms lengths but the only reason why he works hard to help achieve this goal is because he's interested to see just how far humanity's technological advancements can take them. He's passionate about his work and expanding his perspective on the universe.
The Ending
This planet does unfortunately meet a world-ending calamity due to a passing comet. This comet is identified as a fragment separated from "Ghroth" ā the "Singing Comet"ā a massive lifeform adrift in space. It is feared across the cosmos, for wherever it passes, worlds are destroyed.
Its monstrous song rouses the Great Old Ones (eldritch beings like Gods) and its spawn from within the Earth, wreaking calamity upon the land.
Humanity manages to complete Providence before the arrival of "Ghroth" and evacuates the star on a space shuttle. They hoped to use this "Eye of God" in order to preserve the existence of mankind.
The Mission to Preserve Mankind:
A "sentient intelligent comet" has invaded the Mother Blue Star. Its strange song has awakened the lineage of blasphemous gods that slumbered within this world. Even with our civilizationās might, their advance cannot be stopped. Humanityās annihilation is at hand.
Thus, in parallel with evacuating survivors, we devised Code: Dandelion.
A countermeasure missile will be launched directly into the comet, carrying on board a human implanted with Providence. From within, the missile will gradually convert the comet into "seeds of life", to be dispersed across other worlds. One day, these seeds will create a habitable planet for humanity to escape to.
In other words: an artificial panspermia, using the very comet that doomed us as the vessel for humanityās hope.
The chosen pilot: Walse Laika, member of the Providence Development Team.
Walse was chosen as a sacrifice to help complete this mission alongside a close companion (the PC/"playable character") of this story and died.
explaining ranran is like really weird bc it takes place on real life earth but also is an incredibly meta game so it's just really weird to explain unless you're directly involved. it truly is just easier to just roll with the characters as if they're just normal people.
