i think lola tung is a perfect example that we judge wasian people’s ethnicities off of appearances before we know what we even have to say. as someone who is a quarter japanese, i have had to constantly fight to “claim” the wasian identity, because im not half. i have seen a LOTTT of discourse discussing the validity of quarter asian wasians. i have done a bit of research on lola tung and tsitp and i have really not seen much discourse at all about lola tung being wasian, even though she is a quarter asian. people do not question her calling herself mixed asian because she looks like what a stereotypical mixed asian looks like, whereas i am for the most part white passing/appearing. even when people find out she is a quarter asian, i have seen very little people say that she no longer deserves the role or that she is overplaying her chinese ancestry because she looks like a stereotypical asian, or at least “asian enough”. we need to stop trying to decide people’s ethnicities for them just based on their looks, and again, yes this includes white passing/appearing wasians.

another thing, from what i have seen in wasian spaces, asian-ness is praised and talked about, while white-ness is talked about more like something to be ashamed of. it is so asian centered, and i get that it’s because many of us have lived in very white communities and we just want to show our asian heritage, but we are still all part white. again, with the quarter asian thing, i have seen people 3/4 asian and 1/4 white being happily accepted into wasian spaces, while people who are 1/4 asian and 3/4 white are questioned or scrutinized. there isnt a (for lack of a better word) “beauty standard” around looking as asian as possible, but there is a notion that you have to look “asian enough" (skin tone, flat nose, monolids, ect) and people really do treat you like some white person invading your spaces if you don’t “qualify”. wasians need to stop trying to push their own people out if their community because of internalized issues.
