The idea that he had to share his time with Kimi was disappointing, but he didn’t want to miss out on even one second with her. The off-putting sneer on his face faded only after he was done glowering at the other male students, his long fingers finding hers. He grasped her hand gratefully and was tempted for a second time to wiggle his fingers between hers. Seeing as how another had grabbed her free hand, he resisted.
“Of course, Kimi-senpai~ I wouldn’t miss this for the world.” He cooed adoringly. Ignoring the looks given to him, Sanji grinned eagerly. If he hadn’t decided to spend lunch with her, then he would have anticipated it purely for the lunch he had made himself. There wasn’t much he could claim he was proud of, but cooking was one of the few things he knew he was good at. Fighting was a close second, but he had been told to behave while here or else he would be sent back.
Again, Kimi was decidedly oblivious to the sneer he had made at the other male students. It didn’t interrupt the way they made their way out of the classroom, or how they sat down under a tree in the courtyard. As they had walked, however, a couple of people seemed to disappear from their group as other’s called them. Not that she really minded, not seeming to even check for them once they were seated.
Now there were four. Kimi, Sanji, and two other female students. Sanji’s earlier sneer must have scared the male students away.
“Does everyone have lunch? Kimi-senpai didn’t bring a spare bento or anything, but she can share if she absolutely needs to.”
The two girls seemed to offer their lunches to Kimi immediately but she kindly turned them down with a “You need to eat, and I’m fine.”, turning to Sanji with a smile. French culture is something she is completely unaware about-- Were they like America, with cafeterias? Did he make his own lunch? To be honest, she probably should’ve gotten to know him better before offering to have lunch with him.
To the other underclassmen’s confusion, Kimi switches back to English with ease. Why was he getting special treatment!?
“How about you, San-kun? Do you have lunch? Is lunchtime super different where you’re from?”
devilslcg:
He was lead from one hall to another, her gentle hands lead him through the door. His long legs jerked as he stumbled, several pairs of curious eyes sending a thrill of anxiety racing down his spine. Being social wan’t a problem for him ( unless you counted his outright hostilities towards other males a problem ) but he was aware that he stood out and didn’t belong.
Her smile, as radiant as expected, only managed to put him vaguely at ease. Sanji’s lips wobbled into a sheepish grin; he felt silly for wanting to see her again when she had her own obligations, but it was hard not to become attached to the first person that took him seriously enough to help him.
“W—Wait, you’re going to get me after class?” He sucked in a breath, leaned out of the class room and blew her an exaggerated kiss. “KIMI-CHWAN IS THE BEST——!!”
A harsh cough from the front of the class killed the joy in his voice. The swooning blond flinched and pulled himself back into the room, only to find the teacher glowering at him. Sanji sneered back and scoffed when told to come to the front of the class, his behavior around Kimi drastically changing now that she was gone. His lack of experience with their language wasn’t giggled at nearly as much as he thought, which was a relief when he finally found his seat.
Class passed by uneventfully. Despite the awful first impression he made on the class, he had done well. To his surprise, he wasn’t meant to leave the classroom and visit another teacher. Another strange cultural difference that baffled him, but he endured knowing he would see Kimi again.
She only heard his cries as she walked away, though a couple of her peers did give him weird looks for whatever he had done behind her. A friend scooped her arm up once she met her, questioning why she was on the second floor and if she had gotten a boyfriend or something, seeing as her name was called so adoring in a male voice. All of this, however, was met with a small giggle, Kimiko waving it off as just “cultural differences”.
Once classes had ended and it was time for lunch, she had already trodded off to meet the strange young man. What she hadn’t expected was the cautious vibe that blanketed the classroom, Kimiko popping her head in with an innocent look.
“... Ara ara... Did something happen? You all seem so gloomy...”
Her voice is met with heads turning instantly, a couple cries of “Kimi-senpaiii!”. It probably didn’t help that she was actually quite popular with the underclassmen. A couple called out to ask if she’ll have lunch with them, others asked why she was even stopping by. Kimi’s eyes filtered through the students to meet Sanji’s seat, a small smile perking up on her lips.
“I promised San-kun that I’d find him after class. So if you’d like to have lunch with San-kun and I, feel free to come along!”
Beaming, she offers her hand out to Sanji, even as a random female classmate takes her other hand. The class still seemed wary of him, given his immediate personality change when Kimi left earlier, but some were ready to sacrifice that for time spent with Kimi.
“Are you coming?”
{{ Like this for a starter! }}
devilslcg:
“She called me San-kun~!” He sighed and, if that’s that her intention was, reached for her hand. It would have done his heart a mischief if he linked his fingers with hers, but he wasn’t so forward that he would risk making the woman helping him uncomfortable. He only grasped at her fingers gently, giving them a grateful squeeze as she pulled him down the hall.
Meeting even one kind soul was all he needed to feel safe. Here, there were no abusive brothers or a father with high expectations. He only an uncle that showed him the right amount of tough love and fueled his passion or cooking, and now a friend that he could communicate with. If things went well, he might consider making this place his permanent home.
“Will I be able to find you again after class?” He suddenly felt a pinch of anxiety when he considered this might be a one-time thing. She was too kind, and he didn’t want to take advantage of her helpfulness. Nor did he want people to think she was strange because she was hanging out around the strange foreign exchange student. “I mean, if you don’t mind me finding you again…”
He really is... Odd. To be honest, she had to restrain a giggle. Why was he enthralled by the idea of her giving him a nickname, or holding his hand? This could be a play on her own obliviousness of course-- People constantly commented on how she was “far too tolerant” or “far too kind” for her own good. They’d leave it to Kimiko’s curiosity when it came to things considered as ‘new’.
While Kimiko found that having an exchange student is interesting, she was more influenced by her knowledge of English and knowing that he didn’t speak much Japanese. And he had only been kind to her thus far.
Stopping at his classroom, she uses her free hand to guide him inside, only to stop short at his question--
“... Finding me...? Do I really need to be found?”
There’s a couple seconds of contemplation, and it’s unclear if she had misunderstood due to the complexities of the English language or simply thought the answer was obvious. Another second lost to silence before she beams.
“... Oh! You didn’t think I was just going to guide you to class and leave you alone forever, right?”
Turning her back to him so she could start heading off to her own class, she gives him a final glance, accompanied by a wink--
"Kimi-senpai doesn’t leave a friend behind! I already decided I was picking you up after class. See you then, San-kun!”
devilslcg:
“Kimi-senpai~! It sounds so cute when you say it!” He sighed with pure adoration and felt his heart hammer in his chest, hands pressing to the spot in hopes that it might hide the thudding from her ears. If there were rumors that he was easily swayed by the fairer sex, then he would have confirmed then that it was true. He was a bumbling, bashful, love-struck fool when it came to women, but he was making an effort not to lose himself so soon after meeting her.
The lanky blond calmed himself with a couple of breaths and stood upright, expression easing into something softer. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. You can call me whatever you like, mademoiselle, but most people call me Sanji. I appreciate you helping me out. I’ve tried to ask a couple of other students for directions, but…”
He was met with giggling, either because his Japanese needed work or his behavior made it hard for them to take him seriously. Thank goodness he found her, or else he would have made an awful impression on his first day.
Once the grin had faded to an adoring(?) sigh, she felt she could breathe again. Good– She hadn’t just ruined his day via a misstep. She couldn’t imagine having to adapt to an entirely new culture at this age– English was hard enough when she was younger and visiting English-speaking relatives. Even if they found her attempts adorable.
"Ah-- Really? I don’t know why people keep saying that...”
A pause, before she flashes him a grin.
“Hey-- You’ll be late if we don’t find your classroom, right? Let’s go, San-kun!”
Outstretching her hand towards him, she starts walking backwards, in the direction of his classroom. As strange as it sounds, she’s glad he found her. Being one of the few fluent English-speakers in the school, there’s no telling how the other’s may understand him. The cultures are vastly different, after all. That’s why she keeps hearing ‘flirty Frenchman’.
devilslcg:
His grasp on Japanese was pathetic at best, but he had gathered a few words here and there during his short time here. Please, thank you, sorry and cute where the only ones he was certain of, and it was only because he was keen on flirting that he knew the latter. So, hearing it from her, he felt his heart nearly bound from his chest. His face lit up, lips pulling back into a toothy grin. His nerves vanished and the hope that this wouldn’t be a total disaster returned.
And then it all crashed again the moment she said his name. A shudder marred his perfect posture. His grin disappeared. There was still the tiniest glimmer of hope buried under the rubble, but it was only there because she admitted to speaking English. The chances that anyone here would know that name and the meaning behind it were slim, but hearing it didn’t make him like it anymore than usual.
Nodding, he attempt a softer, more grateful smile. “I’d appreciate that, miss…? I’m sorry. You know my name already, and I don’t know yours.”
There was an instantaneous tilt of the head once she saw his grin disappear when she mentioned his name. Ah... Was knowing his last name a bad thing? Her only reason for knowing was because the school had talked about him so frivalously. With words like “flirty” and “a bit odd”, of course, seeing as most Japanese women were rather reserved.
There was no trouble for her to switch to English, accent seeming almost non-existent. That’s what you get for having Australiasian relatives.
“Aaah... How embarrassing! I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Kimiko Akibara, but Kimi-senpai is fine. I only know your name because everyone is talking about you! Do you have a...”
A pause, as if she’s trying to find the right word for it.
“好適 ... Preferred! Preferred name? That I should be aware of? I wouldn’t want to make things awkward...”
bearxclaws:
“I know how it works, Blondie! M’not stupid! I didn’t ask you to pay for it, so don’t go——! Listen to me, dammit! I don’t want it! I don’t need some pretty, privileged girl actin’ like she’s all high-and-mighty because she can afford to pay for someone else. HEY!” The more she complained, the high her voice grew in volume. Shame and irritation colored at her cheeks while irregular breaths swelled in her lungs. Someone with a temper like hers wasn’t afraid to throw a punch if she needed to assert herself, but he woman shoving food into her arms had already left.
Growling in frustration and snatching the cup from the startled barista, Anita stormed out of the café. She followed behind the generous woman, weaving between oncoming foot traffic and hoisting the hot drink high above her head. Spilling a drink that wasn’t hers while chasing the woman it belonged would ruin the one excuse she had to pursue her, so she kept it as far away from herself as she could. A bump here, a stumble there, and she was able to grab for the woman’s shoulder just as they reached the street corner.
“Will you stop?! I’m not gonna tell you again, DON’T buy stuff for me.” With shaking hands, she helped the one with fair hair fold her arms and placed the food and hot chocolate inside them. “I can’t pay you back, so I won’t accept it. I don’t like owein’ people favors, either. So just… don’t.”
Never in her life had the poor girl been grabbed so aggressively. Especially with the other’s hands shaking so vigourously, snapping her arms into a fold and shoving the food and hot chocolate in her arms. The surprise that lit up her blue eyes were expected, and though Kimi wasn’t one to get annoyed easily... This aggressive behaviour was really starting to get to her.
Thankful that the lid was firmly on the cup, she had no trouble in throwing her hands up to push the food and the hot chocolate into the air. Using her skills from her other life, she watched as they neatly fell, catching the cup in one hand, and the bag of food in the other.
A crowd had already stopped short near them at the kerfuffle, forcing a sigh from the young girl’s lips.
“... Can you please stop? I can get you hate me for wanting to spend my pocket money on some stranger, but I’m not asking for something in return. I’m not taking your food. I’m not taking this behaviour.”
With a flick of her wrist, again, that bag of food being tossed about returning to Anita. There’s only so much a girl can handle without wanting to get aggressive herself.
“Thank you for the hot chocolate. If you really must see some kind of debt to this situation, consider it paid. Now, would you kindly stop harassing me?”
Consider it just Kimiko’s luck that one of the time she decided to “pay it forward”, she did so for someone who was literally going to chase her down just to yell at her.
The Beginning
taikisses:
『 It was supposed to be the first day of high school, the life-changing First Semester in afuture adult’s life- and in a way, she supposed it was. Just….not how she had initially assumed.』
YOKO doesn’t think anything of it at first- after all, the upperclassman is pretty, and movies always describe a first crush as a spark, so the sharp flicker that courses through her mind is written off as an interest in the beautiful girl she had happened to pass in the hallway.
AND so she ducks away, into her classroom, unintentionally hiding and wondering if maybe that upperclassman had felt the same.
THE gardening club; there’s an irony in the fact that Yoko had followed - not stalked - her upperclassman into the one club she had been interested in joining. Maybe it’s fate, but Yoko just writes it off as amazingly good luck, something she’s not exactly known for.
AND so she peeks shyly at the third year - Akibara Kimiko, Yoko’s sure to remember the name - during the introductions, always looking away when it feels as if those bright blue eyes might meet hers.
FOR a split second, though, they meet, right as Yoko is gestured at, and that spark flickers through her mind once again, this time causing her to trip up, mentally and physically, stumbling slightly as she bows, still trying to smile through her mess up-
“I-I’m Hanasaki Yoko from Toukawa middle! Please take care of me!”
SHE’S pretty sure she botched something up.
A smile of smug satisfaction crosses her lips when she hears the first new member answer, only to be replaced soon after with a natural smile for each new introduction. A subtle glare from the Club President admits the accuracy of her statement, though a warning of “Don’t scare them away” to keep her in check.
She was always a little too free with her speech and oblivious to what reactions it may pull.
The introductions are finished with a single clap from both the Club President and Kimiko, another glare shot Kimiko’s way for mimicking, before the Club President speaks.
“Alright! Now that everyone knows each other, there’s a tradition we usually make sure begins on the first day you join the club. Each first year student picks a plant they want to cultivate for the next three years they’re at this school!”
“This is a plant that will represent you, or your growth. Be sure to treat them kindly, as they will be your main focus for the next three years.”
Kimiko chimes in brightly at the end, bringing out a bouquet of pink roses. To each new member, she smiles as she passes them a single rose out of the bouquet, placing it into their hands. As she hands each rose around, the President speaks.
“I trust, like this flower’s meaning, that your plants will bring you happiness. After that, you can choose your mentor. They will help you grow as a Green Thumb.”
bearxclaws:
Of course she was short a few yen. She was ALWAYS short — short on money, short on time, short on patience. The latter was the most noticeable as she begrudgingly began to gather up what little money she had scattered across the counter. Under her breath she mumbled and spat curses, cheeks the slightest bit red with embarrassment. She had been so sure that the spare change she found in the park would be enough, the sensation of hope slowly decomposing in her gut making her feel nauseous.
That was, until some chipper looking blonde paid for her meal. Head lifting, Anita gawked at the stranger. The one standing behind the counter didn’t seem to care who the money came from, as long as they were being paid. The card exchanged hands for a moment, the food the brunette had grabbed sliding towards her.
“No, wait. I’m——!” Greedy as she was, she hated knowing that she owed someone. Kindness was not free. It was a belief she stubbornly held onto since childhood, and she wouldn’t abandon it now despite the gnawing hunger in her stomach.
Huffing through her nose, she stalked over to the gracious woman and set her food down. “I didn’t ask for your pity. You bought this food, it’s yours. I can find someplace cheaper to eat. Don’t go around thinkin’ people are gonna be happy that you’re rubbin’ your money in their faces.”
Kimiko was used to people just shrugging when the meal was paid, taking the food and leaving. Watching them go with a smile, knowing that even though she’d never get to see them again, she could make it a little easier on them. And at this particular cafe, she was a regular, so her ‘paying it forward’ was a normal thing. Hence the lack of reaction from the staff.
There was bound to be a day where she was yelled at for her kindness, though.
Blue eyes blinked in confusion at the sudden hostility, Kimiko tilting her head to interpret the other’s words. Had she been too brash? She hadn’t meant to pity the woman, simply do an act of kindness--
“... That’s not how this system works. I’m not thinking of you as a charity case.”
Being one to not get frustrated easily, she gazed at the other calmly. A slight smile is offered without any malice as she continues--
“It’s a system I learned about when I went overseas. It’s called “Pay it Forward”. When you have some extra cash, you pay for someone else’s meal, no strings attached. This cafe has the same sort of system-- Which is why the barista had no problems in taking my card instead. So...”
Her smile doesn’t leave her as she picks up the bag containing the bought food, placing it back into the brunette’s hands.
“It’s yours. And so you know there’s no strings attached, I’m going to leave you alone now. Sorry if I upset you.”
The hot chocolate she ordered earlier is forgotten about as she leaves, opting to give disgruntled girl space. The barista calls out her name, but she doesn’t seem to hear it, only a step outside the door when the Barista speaks--
“Eeeh? Kimi-chan never leaves without the hot chocolate... Hey, Miss-- If it’s not too much-- Can you give this to the lady that just left?”
❤; @tsuukisses
When he made it known that he was more than happy to exchange schools and submerge himself in a culture vastly different than this own, he failed to mention that his only reason was to meet foreign women. Everyone and their parents knew that there were only two things on the young man’s mind — food and love. Part of his excitement when he finally arrived in Japan was the idea that he would be trying new foods, learning new techniques and admiring how different things were here.
It was staggering and intimidating, but it was a welcome change. With no one to bully him, he felt free to do as he pleased. Any friends he made here wouldn’t know who he was or what his brothers were like; they would meet Sanji, the Frenchman that loved to compliment and spoil people with delicious food.
That was, until he realized how difficult it was flirting with the girls here. Back home, all it took was a subtle bow of his head and a quick kiss to their knuckles to fluster them. Here, that seemed less than acceptable. Not to mention no one seemed fond of him the moment he arrived.
Sadly, he was in need of help. The language barrier was thick and impenetrable, and the only way he could find his classroom was with a little help. There was one girl in particular he wanted to ask, but — for the first time since noticing the opposite sex — he felt nervous approaching her.
But, knowing it was now or never, he slowly slid up to her and cleared his throat. “Uh, excuse me. I’m sorry to bother you, but can you help me find this room?”
The school ‘buzzed’ with anticipation about the new student, and of course, Kimiko was the first to hear about it. A flirtatious frenchman who was trying to steal the hearts of many-- An exchange student at Hanakoto high!? If he hadn’t found her first, she might have seeked him out simply due of curiosity.
... The rumours couldn’t have been true, right?
Fortunately for this social butterfly, he had made his way to her instead. Albeit him looking rather intimidated by her, which was a first. Most found her cute more than intimidating, a constant beacon of hope for those who were lost and needed help. She supposed he was no different, even with his sheepish demeanour.
“... Cute! You’d be... Vinsmoke-kun, correct? I know English, if that helps.”
While her English is spoken fluently, she can’t help but add the honorific in there. Old habits die hard, even in other languages, it seems. Regardless, she gives him a warm smile, peering over at the note in his hand.
“Oh! That’s not too far away, would you like me to guide you?”
@bearxclaws caught Kimiko’s attention ~
‘Obliviousness’ could be Kimiko’s middle name, with the way that she hummed to herself quietly, nails tapping against the counter as she waited for her order. The only thing that was on her mind in that moment was her hot chocolate with three marshmallows, the creamy way it would taste and how happy she’d feel in moments. Hence the happy tune she was humming, tapping away as she absentmindedly eavesdropped in on other customer’s orders.
A medium-sized mocha for one, a half-strength long black for another...
It was the customer after them that seemed to catch her attention, however, listening as they counted up each and every coin they had on their person. Blinking, she stopped her humming to look over at them. Were they simply trying to get rid of their change? The expression they had on didn’t seem that way, especially when the cashier said they were a couple of yen short.
Without even thinking, Kimiko’s credit card had tapped the eftpos machine.
“Whoops, sorry! I forgot-- This one is on me!”
A grin and a wink offered to the person who’s lunch she just paid for, she simply tucks her credit card away again, returning to her spot from before.
new background I made
feel free to use! ^-^
The Beginning
@taikisses left a spark ~
「 When the day had started, Kimiko had promised herself a ‘normal’ school day. The last thing she expected was an underclassman to completely flip her plans. 」
It all started with a spark. Kimiko usually wasn’t one to pay attention to those who passed her by, focusing on herself or whatever was in her hands at the time. A surefire way to attract her attention, apparently, was a blur of black, emitting a spark in the back of her brain. However, by the time she turned to meet the person who sent such a reaction through her spine, the blur had disappeared...
“Welcome to the Gardening Club! My name is Fumihiko Mizuki, and I’m the president of this club. Beside me is Akibara Kimiko, my second in command.”
Her feet take her a step forward as she’s introduced, bowing slightly in greeting. Induction usually started with the introductions of the third years, before the first years introduce themselves and chose their mentor to start them off. A strange tradition started by the President before them that they’ve simply run along with, seeing as most first years who join the club have no clue about the best ways to make sure their plants do sprout up and grow.
It gives them a chance to grow, as well.
“Alright, now that all previous club members have been introduced, it’s your turn! We’ll start with... You!”
Kimiko’s eyes lift to meet the icy blues of a particular student, two black pigtails tied behind them. Again, she feels that spark just hours before-- Eyes widing in slight disbelief.
( What did these sparks even mean...? )
“Ara ara... We sure have some cute ones joining us this year, don’t we?”
It’s no surprise that she receives a nudge in the gut from the Club President.
They ask you what love is, but the real question is what love isn’t. Because love is everything-
It’s the SUN that shares its b e l o v e d light with the WORLD that gives it a name and treats it as a god-
It’s the TIDE that come up to meet the MOON that it’s destined to never touch, yet still reaching, r e a c h i n g-
It’s the FLOWER that blooms for the BUTTERFLY, sharing warm colors and sugar floss f e e l i n g s until the day it dies-
It’s the BEE that dies at the very MOMENT it is born, heart spilling out to protect family before breathing its last-
And most importantly, d a r l i n g, above all else, it’s
you and me.
