If Jade Carey is the US's 3rd All Arounder there are structural problems. It's not an insult to Carey. Not her vault. But that means they're bringing a bunch of tiny swiss army knives to a sword fight.

Is a swiss army knife useful in a team final score? Yup. Will a swiss army knife win you one on one duels with an actual sword? No.

Which team of five swords is USA going to be competing against one on one in Paris?

GBR and Italy have lost their best team members to injury, China doesn’t have any AAer without a weakness, Brazil’s entire team strategy relies on three very specific people not being injured at the same time, France drove their best gymnast to Algeria, Japan is counting their lucky stars that Miyata Shoko is still able to walk after NHK, and Canada’s armoury consists of Ellie Black carrying four swordless gym bags.

People have been complaining about USA having “problems” since Marta retired, but they just keep winning anyway. I scrolled by four posts on my home feed before I got to this one asking what will USA do without Simone, like they didn’t just stroll their way to gold without her in 2022.

I am not a USA fan, I would love it if they didn’t even medal in Paris, but if having Jade Carey as an AAer is a structural problem, after she was 9th AA in quals at the Olympics and 3rd! AA in 2022 Worlds quals, then the rest of the world needs to be contacting the Red Cross for help with their programs.

Post-Marta Team USA has been doing a pretty good job at keeping their top gymnasts consistently healthy and able to compete. Whatever they’re doing to achieve that is a big win for the program. That’s what will keep them winning into the future with or without Jade Carey, with or without Simone.
