i did a show and now i’m sad it’s over. but also i’m obsessed with myself so let’s talk about me some more.

Every time I do a show this happens. It’s like a weird post show depression. It only lasts a day or so, but it still kind of sucks. We just had our last performance of Oklahoma! and I’m gonna miss so many people in that cast. 

I hadn’t done a show in 3 years before this due to some poor life/career choices. So doing this show was like coming home. Literally, because I grew up doing theater with a lot of the cast, or their kids. Not doing a show in so long I honestly didn’t expect to get the lead, but it happened and I can’t say how much it meant to me. 

Obviously being in the performing arts we all look for that gratification of applause, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love after the show when the audience tells you what a great job you did (whether they mean it or not). But especially this show, having the weight of Curly Mclain on my shoulders I really felt like I needed more approval than usual.

I guess it was also tough because I’ve never felt super...masculine. I mean, I’m not the most feminine guy out there, by any means. But this character is basically a force of masculinity and confidence two of my (self-perceived) weakest attributes. 

In the end though I’m proud of my performance. It got me out of my comfort zone, and it was such a huge reversal from the parts I’m usually cast in. (awkward, goofball, comedic bad guy) So I’m glad I got to push my limits and try new approaches to my characterization. It wasn’t easy, but I did the best I can do, and that’s what matters. 

Now I go back to just working every day in the bookstore, until the next show comes around. Hopefully sooner, rather than later.

What infuriates me about the Orlando shooting is the media’s blatant removal of the word “gay” from their headlines on this tragedy. It was a GAY NIGHTCLUB. Don’t you fucking dare forget that. Don’t erase the identities of victims of the worst mass shooting in American history because you don’t think it’s pertinent to your story. This was a hate crime directed solely at the LGBTQIA community for daring to exist in the year 2016.
