Ep.5 Leaps of Faith
“The wrath inside Sean’s chest makes me immediately understand, that the violence he shows is to conceal the weakness inside.”
Sean meets Tawi Ep.8 Not Me
“I Quit” - “Your plan gave me a life goal”
I was re-watching Not Me with a friend and Seans reaction to “Black” quitting hit so much harder, his reaction makes so much more sense to me now. Blacks plan gave Sean a ‘life goal’ a reason to continue living and “Black” quitting is essentially taking away Seans reason for being alive. That is why it shook him so much and why he was so emotional about it, even though Sean doesn’t necessarily like Black he is still the reason he’s alive and the thought of him quitting is equal to everyone else who left him all alone.
Rewatching not me for the nth time, I really appreciate how rough everyone looks. I mean, the actors are still absolutely beautiful (and Gun almost inhumanly so), but there’s a roughness to them that isn’t there in other shows. Like, juxtapose it with something like Cutie Pie. Don’t get me wrong, the asthetics of cutie pie are fantastic and I love staring at eye candy on the screen, but when I’m looking at the faces of the actors in Not Me, I can see the pores on their faces, their skin doesn’t look like its made of silk and I can see the actual texture of their faces. Even Gun, who’s default is almost unearthly in looks, feels raw and real in a way that I didn’t think was possible. Off’s stubble is seen when Sean is waking up in the morning. The cleanist parts of the show are White’s home in the begining, Todd’s flat, and Dan’s product placement car. It’s such an effective way to hammer home the message from just a set design and costuming standpoint that I love the attention to detail.
I've just been on the hell site that is twitter and saw someone saying that KHAI has at least partial blame in the ching ching kiss incident and oh my god! This rubbed me the wrong way so bad! It was along the lines of he should have seen it coming' so he's at fault for not cutting her off and being a freaking nice human, like what?! It read to me like when I see someone saying 'oh she was wearing those clothes so she was asking for it'.
If anyone thinks Khai is in the wrong here, I'm sorry but you're wrong, she assaulted him, and I will defend that till the day I die.
Sorry, rant over.
Sorry to barge in on your rant but I feel you'd like to know this if you don't already!
The thing is, in the novel Third is suspicious of Khai and Ching Ching only bc he sees that she's been texting Khai. After Third finds him at the train station they go eat at a noodle stand where they talk about the incident and Khai shows Third the chats where Ching Ching had been trying to flirt with Khai despite Khai pretty much telling her he wasn't interested and that he wanted her to stop bc he was trying to start a relationship with Third and didn't want Third to get the wrong idea, and even eventually blocking Ching Ching altogether. It makes Third realise that this time he was the one in the wrong for letting his insecurities get the best of him and assuming the worst of Khai.
The show, on the other hand, creates the misunderstanding by showing not just Third but also the audience a false narrative where Khai seems to lead Ching Ching on by spending time with her and welcoming her advances for dramatic effect, without actively clearing up said misunderstanding to the audiece by showing how Khai had tried his best to set up clear, professional boundaries with Ching Ching which she knowingly ignored to come onto him despite him stating he didn't want her to. Which leads to people, justifiably, misunderstanding the whole situation and putting blame on Khai for what happened despite it being entirely out of his control.
Yes, Khai was polite to Ching Ching and spent time around her. No, their interactions weren't anything more than professional on his side. No, he did not lead her on by welcoming her advances. Yes, she ignored his rejection and discomfort at every step. No, Khai holds no justifiable blame in this situation. Yes, people will still continue to think he does because the show deliberately made it look like he led her on for the drama abd didn't properly clarify what really happened between him and Ching Ching like the novel did.
As I've said a million times before, one of my only real issue with TOL is how the show makes Khai out to be so much more of an asshole than he actually is when in the novel he was just a dumb slut (affectionate) and doesn't give enough time and focus to Khai's side of the story despite Khai's bisexual realisation and his journey to becoming a better person to feel worthy of Third's love being a much bigger part of the novel than Third's insecurities over his crush on Khai. So much of the novel is about Khai and Third communicating and figuring out both themselves and each other and building a healthy relationship together but most of the very important scenes of them actively doing all that just never made it into the show because they focus on the more outwardly dramatic moments instead. If they'd just not added in all those scenes of Khai doing selfish things and instead used that screentime for all the scenes where Khai and Third talked heart to heart about their relationship and how important they are to each other it would’ve made for a much better story overall.
Theory of Love is so far the ONLY time I recommend people who like the bl read the novel bc the depth of their emotions and Khai's whole journey is so much more than the show lets on. The way the novel explores both of their feelings for each other and about their situation in general is honestly really well done and quite impactful. So far, every single person I know who has read either the whole novel or parts of it has agreed the novel does a much better job showing why KhaiThird love each other and why they're perfect together. Absolutely worth the read. (Just skip the special ch with the sex scene no bl sex scenes are worth reading.)
I did hear that they did him dirty, but I haven't been able to read it yet, do you know where I could? (I'm terrible at finding these things)
Even though the show painted him in such a negative and shitty light, I still can't understand the thought process of him being in the wrong. Like his reaction to the whole situation was all I needed personally, maybe I'm too sympathetic lol
(I will definitely be skipping the special ch sex scene, never been a fan lol)
Look what came today... yes I bought them, and yes I'll be wearing one all the time

I’m still here...
I still can't get over the different dynamics Off and Gun showed us during Not Me. Like the casual intimacy and insane chemistry between Sean and White is absolutely amazing, and yet the dynamics between Sean and Black are so different, there is no chemistry, no intimacy, you really feel like these two couldn't care less about each other, yet it's the complete opposite for Sean and White, you really feel like they care the most for each other. And that just goes to show how amazing they both are as actors, because it's insanely difficult to 'turn off' chemistry.
I see many people upset about the fact that there are so many loose ends, Tawi being the big one I guess. But to me it makes sense, this is a story about fighting for your beliefs and finding people who share them, it's not a story about toppling the government, it's not a story about the end of the battle. Not Me is the story of a group of broken individuals who find each other and band together to fight and in the process find love and family whilst also providing information to the masses, so they can find the courage to fight too.
This is a story about arguably the most important part of any protest or social reform and that's the beginning everyone involved has helped start the long journey that will hopefully end in change, but change, especially on this scale, takes years upon years of action and fighting.
