WE ARE BACK AFTER ELEVEN YEARS!!!!!!

I think back to my 30th birthday a lot — solo in Spain. As a New Yorker, I couldn't believe how cheap yet better tasting the white wine was. Don't mind if I do. After hefty lunches, I would walk the busy streets of Barcelona so boozed and happy. It was the first time I was single on a birthday in 11 years. More on that later.

Anyway, this song is the lead single to that era, that version of me. I remember listening so closely to the song, to the lyrics, with no ache because I was so far from heartbroken, I was heartful! And what now? Lol. I said more on that later.

I generally veer away from the House/EDM type of music these days, but some songs just escape that category and define themselves. Exhibit A) Shift K3y's take on this Jessie Ware song (that I wasn't even aware of). The original version was already a gem by itself, but this remix was just...everything. The ending is my favorite. Have a listen.

So much of me is driving. Really. Its one of the hard truths that reenforces how not-made-for-New-York I am. Commuting and driving are two very different things, entailing two different states of mind.

I can write a whole book about romanticizing driving, if you ask me. Unlike commuting, it takes zero level of self-consciousness. And yet it takes a lot of self-consciousness to be doing hand, eye and foot coordination in operating machinery. I especially love driving home at night, cruising through glowing street lights and empty streets.

Hey Honne, if both of you are reading this, thanks. I have yet to turn this up on a drive home, but I'm sure it will be amazing.

OH MAN! I am SO sorry, Jessie Ware. I truly am. I'm sorry but you totally got trumped in this track. Cole completely killed it--and my heart hurts because he finished so early. Cole, why you do that? Man. What a tease.

I played this song close to ten times today--unfortunately, not through the end every time. In fact, listening to the rest of the song ends up being a chore because of Cole. Seriously.

Today we're on to hip hop. I always have my boyfriend in mind when I think of what to post...but then again, his flavor is too real for mine. He likes Tupac, Rittz (who the f, right), etc. I looked Rittz up and hey, he's kinda happenin. I'm surprised to see he is white. Now this track has Posner in it (two hit wonder, unfortunately. Please Don't Go & Bow Chicka Wow Wow) who makes things softer than Rittz' other songs.

Ugh I love Kylie so much. She's just so light, fresh and girly...like a tampon. I remember listening the hell out of this song after a good date. It felt so good to have Kylie sing my thoughts out. I mean sure, there's Taylor Swift, but her sex appeal compared to Kylie is ZERO! Unlike Miley Cyrus, Kylie is just effortlessly sexy. I don't see her sticking her tongue out but she is just oozing with.

I wish I was already a teenager when Kylie dropped hit after hit. I would've cranked them all in the shower or something.

I really like this band. They're kind of like Passion Pit, but with a different kind of flavor. I like how the melody doesn't overpower the vocals, but then it takes over at some point in the song, and you're like...wooowwww yes. So satisfying.

I'd say this would be a great song for long Sunday morning drives. Couldn't try it out for myself, unfortunately. My baby Toyota is left back at home.

Tuesday quickie.

Who's that talking? Is that Lil' Wayne? Haha, fooled you.

This song sounds fresh to me--I don't really know why. Heavy rap usually gets heavy when they be spittin and spattin, but I lasted the whole song with this one. Plus I kinda missed the way rap barely pronounces. Only a real OG would understand verbatim! But...I'm proud I picked up "baby, pass me the hookah" easily. Yay me.

I think my boyfriend will like this song lol.

When I was in high school, "remixes" used to be pop songs with a rapper squeezed in one of the instrumentals. Lol, remember those days? We've come a long way since.

Now, what makes a good remix?

I can't say definitively. "As long as it's not butchered," is the answer I used to throw but hey! I've heard remixes of songs butchered to the marrow, and I liked them.

The one nonnegotiable for me, however, is that the feature song must still be recognizable. I can't appreciate a remix if it took away the "essence" of the original.

20syl kept it pristine in this one. It's that piano going back and forth a few notes and Rihanna's signature husk that carried it all.

This one is fairly new. It was love at first listen--from the guitar. to the bass and of course, her angelic voice. I hold this song dear to my heart because I feel like my self-imposed interpretation is quite close to whatever the composer was trying to convey. I think it said a lot about long distance relationships without being the least bit cheesy.

Come to think of it, I haven't actually heard the original version of this. Or maybe I did, but this one won the place in my heart.

It's the guitar riffs, I'm positive! It's just pure and sultry. There isn't even much being said--just one line sang over and over again. It makes me want more, but when the song ends I'm left greatly satisfied.

Now this guy, Gibbz, is a fella from Brooklyn. I think the album is about a month old.

I've always had a thing with these type of beats, kinda funky, kinda soulful, lots of electronic. Kind of reminds me of Cherub with that falsetto. The vocals in this is distinctly different however, definitely also grade A.

If you're clever (like me), you'll pick up the sneaky, freaky lyrical plays.

I kind of miss classic Kanye. Don't you? Suddenly rappers want to rap about feeling mighty and glorious, rich and famous and hating it, or whatever, etc etc.

This song came out a long time ago. I even remember listening to it under the influence. Anyway, TWRK has reworked this song into the best trap song ever! It's my favorite song to play in my boxing gym. I've never been outwardly complimented on my song choices on there before, until I played this song. It came in the form of, "Excuse me, do you mind if I take a look at your iPod for a second? I'd just like to check that last song."

Remember your roots!

Although I'm not as updated with the rock scene as I used to be, I always make it a point to look for new acts here and there. My flavor would be in between the clubs (Bombay Bicycle, Two Door Cinema, Tokyo Police) and the ambient ones like Polock, Pet Lions, etc.

So I heard this song in a Forever 21, and I went in a trance. It's a spring/summer track which is a few steps away from the rock that I got used to. On top of the usual drums, bass, guitar and vocals this has a few xylophone sounds.

And of course, the lyrics are awesome. Come on, get used to it, the poet in me loves that stuff.

It's Hiphop Tuesday, everybody.

So we have Jay-z, J. Holiday, J. Cole, now we have...J. Mars. Although, I wouldn't really put him beside those artists. This song is pretty old, but I heard it only a couple months back as recommended by a friend.

Now which branch of hiphop does he belong to? Definitely not hardcore rap, not gangsta, not mainstream (you know--the type that has a catchy hook, perfect for radio). I'd say this is like smoker hiphop. Yeah, I made that up but I can't think of anything more fitting. I have a whole playlist of these smoker hiphoppers even though I don't smoke.

The beat is great, the lyrics are eloquent and meaningful ("pussy" wordcount: zero), and most importantly, it is without the tiniest bit of monotony. That J. Mars knows how to fit verses into the beat.

Left this blog a year ago and focused on 8tracks, had great success with it (visit here), and now I'm back. Why? I feel like I don't want to care as much about likes anymore. Sometimes I whip up a good mix, but I end up totally forgetting about it if it doesn't turn gold. Yeah, the habit kind of caught on since the multiple, consecutive golds. I apologize if that sounded obnoxious--let me put it this way: say I was a stand-up comedienne (ha ha, political correctness) who had so much jokes to tell. People attend my shows, but they do so for the theme of the night or something. Well what if I had a really good joke that can't fit in a theme??? What if I manage to put that in anyway, and nobody laughs? Is it still funny? What the fuck did I just write. So for a kickstart here is Miguel's live session of Do You. This will determine whether or not our musical taste align, because seriously if you don't find this any bit interesting then GET OUTTA HERE!!!
