― Well, he certainly didn't act like it didn't get to him, but Gregory could feel the shift in how Gyro was. That was good. Those first, always overly blunt comments helped him gauge how he needed to press on. Sometimes people reacted, tried to defend themselves. They argued, denied, asked why Gregory would say it? Then there were those like Gyro. Those who just acted as if a wall between the words and a reaction was enough to stop the consequences. It wasn't, because internally that thought would linger.
❝ I suppose not, my friend. I can't say I had ever thought of it that way. Even letters can be used as a trick. Would it really be ignorance if there was no way to know what was right? Or does hindsight always make a moron, I wonder. ❜
In the distance, there was the sound of... well something motorized moving. It was distant, in the hallways, though Gregory's reaction was more than enough to indicate the sound wasn't a hallucination. Eyes going wide briefly, he looked towards the opposite hallway, watching carefully.
❝ Perhaps it would be best if we keep moving, my friend. ❜
If there was anything Gyro knew, it was the sound of a machine. The shift was immediate - technically he was heeding the advice Gregory gave, but instead of moving away from the sound he moved toward it. Machinery was a lifeline, it meant something he could potentially use if he needed to.
"I am moving."
He grows a little more wary the closer he gets to the noise and further away from Gregory's light. The machine is hidden by the gloom he's squinting into, and he can't sense it the way he should. Usually technology prickles against his magical senses like a light touch to his feathers, but it doesn't register here. It's... wrong.
"Show me what you are."
He's trying to coax it out, harshness in his voice lightening slightly now that he's not addressing a person.

The city is full of beautiful surprises.
I dreamt you killed me.
Are the police after me?
Let's see who was killed today.
How do I know this isn't the usual swindle?
I don't know what's happened to me. I've got to get away.
Why do you buy my paintings?
I don't feel very well. I must get some air.
It was an air raid during the war.
Only death could be quieter than this.
Listen, I don't exist to make profits. I'm not a stockbroker.
You can't kill me with that. Come to bed.
Hey, what're you doing? Leave me alone!
Didn't you hear anything?
When I cleaned up today they weren't there!
It's over 25 years since I last stepped inside that villa.
Do you believe in spirits?
I believe in spirits, there's no question in my mind.
I suppose you heard the girl died near the wall of the villa.
Stop, you're making me dizzy.
What's the matter with you? Are you crazy or something?
Why do you have to behave like this?
Why did you cry out just then?
Look out, look out! The roof is falling!
I felt as if someone were pulling me down!
It was as if it wanted to hurt me deliberately.
I don't like the house, and the house obviously doesn't like me.
I find that your wit, as usual, is tasteless.
May I ask just why you're so interested in the house's story?
Don't listen to that! They don't know the truth about her.
We have a very gifted medium in the town, you should to them!
Why don't you come with me tonight?
Spirit, don't you want me in your house?
You want me all to yourself, don't you? Is that why you tried to kill [name]?
If some madman is going around putting flowers under your walls, I couldn't care less.
Your questions reminded me of an old story. A doomed love story.
Nobody, nobody would ever believe me.
You didn't care? Why not?
Come in, come in. What do you want to know?
Don't go. Please, don't go.
You'll kill it like that. Better dead and red.
Have you gone crazy? What are you doing?
Why did you run off the other day?
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't want to.
I wouldn't like the people in the village to know about it.
No, I don't. I only know she was killed here.
This house was abandoned.
I'm going to tell you something that I've never told anyone.
What are you looking for?
I don't know who I'm fighting. I can't find an explanation!
What is there to explain?
A girl who died here in this house. Now she haunts this house.
I suppose you are the normal one.
What do you do with yourself here all day, since you're obviously not doing much work?
Who are you betraying me with?
Everything I do and am annoys you, doesn't it?
We have guests tonight. They're all quite mad.
Why do these things keep happening?
It's like, someone in the house doesn't want me here.
It's your imagination, [name]. There's no one else in this house but me.
You're going to call the spirit?
Please stay. You mustn't leave now. At least stay for the séance.
Sometimes the spirit shows its presence by playing on it.
Bring your chair and sit around the table, please.
It's modeling clay, in case the spirit wishes to leave an imprint.
During a séance, anything can happen.
I want you all to put your hands on the table. Let your fingers touch, forming a chain.
Oh, my god, the ghost!
There's something very unusual in the air tonight.
Before we make contact, one word of warning. Do not ask personal questions or mention the subject death.
From now on, nobody breaks the circle.
Give us a sign of your presence.
Spirit, give us a sign!
How did you die? Who killed you?
Turn on the light quickly! Something's fallen on the table!
Break the chain. Turn on the light, please!
It's an omen of some kind.
Is there anything you wish to tell us?
Stop it, all of you! I know what you're doing!
Do you think I'm so stupid I'd believe this?
The spirit wants to leave.
Who is that? My chair's shaking!
Someone tried to strangle me! Get out of here!
Go home! Everyone, go home! She doesn't want you here!

"Bah, morons say anything corrupts the mind when they don't understand it. Anything can be considered occult when ignorance is in play. People will make terrible choices with or without technology and always have, all it does is show it happening more often. There's no difference between an email and a letter other than speed of receipt."
He glanced around the dining room, seemingly unimpressed. This room didn't feel any less liminal than the halls did, an uncanny sense that Gyro assumed the whole house held. It wasn't shadows, but it wasn't mortal either. Absentmindedly the scientist scratched at his arm, disappointed to find only candles even here.
He wasn't going to comment on the seemingly pointed comment of 'being snippy' about people getting too close. What was the point of having personal space if you didn't defend it? If people thought they had a right to get close without earning it, then they deserved the pain that would come to them.

PROMPTS FROM WHEN HARRY MET SALLY * assorted dialogue, adjust as necessary
i've been doing a lot of thinking, and the thing is, i love you.
i love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out.
i love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich.
i love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like i'm nuts.
i love that after i spend the day with you, i can still smell your perfume on my clothes.
i love that you are the last person i want to talk to before i go to sleep at night.
i came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
i'll have what she's having.
would you like to have dinner?
i thought you didn't believe men and women could be friends.
when did i say that?
i mean, come on, who the hell are we kidding?
most women at one time or another have faked it.
they haven't faked it with me.
that's right. i forgot. you're a man.
what was that supposed to mean?
it is so nice when you can sit with someone and not have to talk.
marriages don't break up on account of infidelity. it's just a symptom that something else is wrong.
you realize of course that we could never be friends.
men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.
that's not true.
i have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.
you only think you do.
they all want to have sex with you.
no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive.
i guess we're not going to be friends then.
you were the only person i knew in new york.
there are two kinds of women: high maintenance and low maintenance.
which one am i?
you're the worst kind.
you're high maintenance but you think you're low maintenance.
i just want it the way i want it.
you look like a normal person, but actually you are the angel of death.
don't you have a dark side?
when i buy a new book, i read the last page first.
if you could take him back now, would you?
why didn't he want to marry me?
what's the matter with me?
you're challenging.
i'm too structured. i'm completely closed off.
i drove him away.
how do you expect me to respond to this?
i'm leaving.
i don't have to take this crap from you.
what the hell does that have to do with anything?
are you finished now?
can i say something?
i'm sorry.
everybody thinks they have good taste and a sense of humor but they couldn't possibly all have good taste.
that is just like you.
you say things like that, and you make it impossible for me to hate you.
at least i got the apartment.
the first time we met, we hated each other.
we were friends for a long time.
it only took three months.
you will never have to be out there again.
i'm not going to tell you that.
i miss her.
you know what i miss? i miss the idea of him.
when did this happen?
you don't bounce back from that right away.
doesn't what i said mean anything for you?
i hate you, [name]. i really hate you.
what can i get you?
no one has ever quoted me back to me before.
you know, i'm so glad i never got involved with you.
i am not your consolation prize.
i wrote that.
you're going to have to try and find a way of not expressing every feeling that you have, every moment that you have them.
"god fucking damnit, i'm back."

▬▬▬ ☾☆ Della looked at Huey’s hand, hesitating only brieflybefore shaking it. He was very formal. She didn’t hold on to it for very long though, not wanting to be overly enthusiastic… Even though this was a huge moment for all of them. These were her kids! But as much as this was about her, it was also about them && their comfort. She could respect that. After all, she was still a stranger to them.
She didn’t push the lack of any response from Louie. They were all going to react differently, she figured. Still, when the boys sat down, Della stood at the table instead, just watching them.
❝ It is still chili night. Donnie sure does make a mean pot of chili. Way better than me at that, heh. ❞ She went quiet after that for just a minute before the silence was toomuch for her. ❝ So… did you boys have a good day today? ❞
Hopefully that’d be a good enough conversation starter to tide them over until Donald returned.
Dewey finally took the lead. Louie was quiet enough to worry him, and so he was going to dewey what he did best - talk. “Of yeah, today was great! Learning is boring, but guess who’s got the best part in the big play! He’s got two thumbs and is this guy!” A grin and two thumbs pointing at himself.
That bit of ego was enough to draw a scoff from Louie, the youngest rolling his eyes. “He’s got two lines.” Dewey looked back at him, betrayal obvious. “Oh come on, you know it’s true!”
Huey shook his head, giving Della a long suffering look. “This is actually tame.”
gladstone:
“ Oh, please, doc.” Gladstone rolls his eyes, dismissing the question he asks entirely. For the moment, anyway. “ I can invoke a real emotion out of anyone. ” Sure, usually those emotions are negative, but an emotion is an emotion. And he likes seeing them on the overworked scientist’s face.
While positive emotions are preferred, he’ll take what he can get from Gyro.
“ To answer your question, however, I knew that you’d be holed up in your little lab for however many days on end, and figured a little company might do you good. ”
“As long as you’re not in the way.” Gyro acquiesces. Arguing with any member of the Duck Family is a losing game and that would take energy he could be using for his invention. Besides, as loathe as he was to admit it, he was still a social creature - company was helpful to him in it’s own way.
He almost wished it wasn’t.
“And as long as you’re willing to hold things if I need you to."

❝ you act like…you’re just a good man who did a bad thing. ❞ Gears @ Gyro | @geniusinventor
its easy to forget, sometimes, just how perceptive gears is. there’s the same genius behind the mask of mockery and deception, and a much deeper self awareness than the rest of their selves can really claim to have. he can’t even claim that he particularly likes any of their alternative selves - gears is his favorite, that’s a given at this point - but even so he has a list of people he’d rather have over gears in his life. but there’s a truth in gears’ words.
there’s no such thing as a good gyro gearloose.
he certainly wouldn’t claim it. he stood by and let his brother be killed and raised up by a necromancer as an undead servant and felt no shame, disgust, or affront. there was a grim elation at it, in fact. not the reaction of a good man.
“there are expectations in working for mr. mcduck.”
he shrugs, for all intents the image of nonchalance.
“we both know the truth, gears. i’m a bad man that occasionally does a good thing.”
