Layton’s Mystery Journey: English Dub Trailer Released
Following off of yesterday’s new Japanese trailer, what appears to be the official English Trailer for Layton’s Mystery Journey has surfaced on RPGFan’s YouTube channel! We say “appears to be” on account of we haven’t seen official PR from Level-5 about it, but it’s pretty clearly the real deal.
The game releases July 20th worldwide for Android/iOS and this fall on 3DS.

like….aa has always been this series characterized by walking this line between the absurd and the real. the trilogy’s art style really speaks to this.
these designs are cartoony, yeah. there are obvious anime-esque influences in some of their hairstyles and color schemes. but ultimately you can also see realistic qualities to them, this kind of “imperfect” feel and stylistic direction that makes them also seem pretty human. the lopsided mouths, the folds and creases, the different face shapes and angles. they seem like they COULD be real people, somehow. it adds to the tone of the story: its a fast-paced crime drama with a lot of character and some goofiness to it.
and like…the new games just feel like….anime? it feels like an anime. thats literally the best way i can articulate it. lots of fanservice and pandering, the wacky aspects are totally over-the-top and used to hide lackluster writing, and the characters tend to look generic and super cartoony
its this kind of…hyper-polished, aggressively stylized and super-colorful aesthetic that detracts from it I think? even while nuri’s AA4 art was more anime-esque than the original trilogy, he still made sure to keep a realistic, earthy sort of palette to maintain this tone. and he was never, like…THIS over the top. these are anime characters.
this is entirely subjective but i think it really takes away something special from the unique tone of the series. it takes away something that makes it feel believable, even under all the weird stuff. when you reduce characters to repetitive tropes and give them generic designs, it makes it harder for the audience to relate.
i dunno. im sure absolutely none of this makes sense. and this is all opinion. but i feel like stripping the series of its aesthetic and replacing it with something so aggressively like a comedy anime really brings it down
I really like the art direction of Persona 5 so I wanted to ace attorney it. I was was going to make Blackquill the main portag because he looks like a Persona character but I’ve yet to play the 5th game so I have no idea what’s his character like. So I went with Miles because he can be kinda emoish sometimes.
