he walks down an aisle, his hand gripping the handle of his daughter’s stroller. he’s supposed to get – god what was it? bacon, that’s right. that’s in the meat section, back of the store, and currently he’s walking in the wrong direction. why are these aisles so narrow? he reaches the end and tries to turn the stroller around, but a wheel gets caught and sends some boxes of poptarts towards the ground. “shit – fu..sorry.” he mutters, crouching down to pick up the boxes and remove himself from blocking the aisle.
tessa hardly ever went grocery shopping by herself - she didn’t like having to navigate the aisles on her own and wyatt was the one that always remembered the list. without her little guy she was truly lost. ‘ ... bagel....s? and ... cream .... cheese? ’ she’s mumbling to herself as she walks, trying to make sense of the faded scribbles on the back of her hand.
she stops when she hears a mumbled ‘sorry’ -- it sounded familiar. ‘ christopher? ’ strange coincidence --- she’d spoken to his mother recently ( she’d reached out because she was worried and hoped tessa could help ). ‘ you alright? ’

With the mention of Wyatt’s insides turning to mush a slight chuckle escaped as he mumbled over his shoulder, “Glad to see you’re going with the honesty is the best policy.” His voice tone teased as he playfully low-key questioned her parenting skills. It was only meant in jest; a small attempt to bring about a smile before they delved into something deeper.
Even before they sat down the air started to feel weighted, and he wasn’t exactly sure if it was a shared experience or something he only internalized. He’d been concerned about framing the conversation correctly, and given her response, it was evident he failed. Exhaling the pent up breath he listened as she questioned his rationale, and while he was going to counter he didn’t want to speak over her. Disappointed with his execution the last thing he intended was to make her upset or anxious. Ever since they were kids he’d always taken a little bit of pride in his ability to help calm her down. He stood and closed the space between them by taking a seat at her side; his leg slightly resting against her knee.
Sitting on the edge of the sofa he locked his fingers together opting to scrap his previous tactics. Turning he looked over his shoulder taking in her profile before meeting her stormed over green eyes as he admitted, “Not so much a vacation I guess, Tessa. A place away from here so you and Wyatt can be safe. I think you should go for all the reasons you just mentioned: the show, Maya Pryors, and Lilly. ” Turning his attention away to an adjacent wall he sighed, “My uncle has a cabin on the outskirts of Geneva State Park…it’s nice…peaceful on a lake. Maybe you and Wyatt could go just until things settle down. Take a leave from work…I’ve money. It won’t be a problem.”
in an effort to keep her anger at bay, tessa shuts her eyes and settles back into the couch for a moment. she couldn't imagine leaving right now ... leaving her friends ... FAMILY ... it felt like betrayal.
she pushes herself up and off of the couch, crossing the room to stand by her fireplace. she starts to rearrange the pictures, ' no, ' she shakes her head, ' fuck no. we're not going anywhere and MONEY isn't the reason for the season, ryan. i'm doing GREAT financially. ' she spins to face him, crossing her arms with a huff, ' i can take care of myself and i can take care of my kid. i’m taking the proper precautions to keep wyatt and myself safe. thanks but no thanks. i don't need or WANT your help ... ' she knew her words were harsh but she felt like her competence as a parent was being questioned.
she crosses the room again, deciding to refold a blanket that was draped across the back of her couch, ' leaving is a cop out and you know it. what if someone here needs something? i love this town and most of the people in it, buddy. i know i might not be much help but i’m not going to just up and LEAVE when things are tough. i’m not a coward. ’

A S K I N G??? the thought had never crossed her mind. she didn’t think she’d need to ask anyone’s permission to offer them protection. it was a kindness, on her part, she’d fooled herself into thinking. but, he had a point. her demeanor soured for a moment as she hung on his words, “ the spells are harmless…. “ she said meekly, swallowing the hissss as the word dragged over her tongue. her arms folded inward, pressing hard into her middle, “ no. nothing will happen to you– not if you don’t want me to include you. “ her words were soft and her tone was tight, lips pressed hard between breaths, “ – i’ll just take the flowers and go. i’m sorry for disturbing you, “ she whispered even softer now, a pang of guilt at her obvious oversight digging hard into her gut.
‘ how d’you know? don’t ... haven’t you ever, uh? made ... a mistake? like ... like for example, ’ he shrugs a few times before lifting both hands, ‘ what if my flowers aren’t what you need? sure, you can give me the types of flowers you want, but what if it reacts wrong ‘cause of the way i grow them or the food i use ... y’know? stuff like that. how can you know that your spells are going to work every time? ’ he pauses to be dramatic, ‘ what if you accidentally, like ... obliterate the entire town? which ... y’know ... fine, just let me go home and pack my shit first. ’

rex watches grant’s movements, following the index card with his eyes with dread spilled all over his face. rex doesn’t have money. he doesn’t know how much he has to pay for a couple of flowers but … he hopes five dollars is enough. somehow, he doubts it. ❛❛ you saw my wallet, man. ❜❜ he begins, pulling out the zip lock bag again. ❛❛ i only got five bucks. ❜❜ he sighs quietly, holding it up in front of grant to show him again. it’s stupid that he never carries his money around, or his card, but he wasn’t expecting to need any of it. the only money he brought was the money he already spent on filling up the truck’s gas tank. it never runs through his mind how illegitimate grant’s index card seems, and how easy it would be for him to pull up a copy of his receipt.
❛❛ shit, ❜❜ he murmurs, turning to look at the petals on the ground. that should be easy. ❛❛ alright, where’s the broom ? ❜❜ he looks back at grant, sounding completely defeated but with an air of purpose around him.
grant wasn’t expecting rex to actually agree to clean up the front of his shop. it had been a ridiculous request ... he was sure the other would just grab his flowers from behind the counter and leave ... they were already paid for, after all. grant claps once before shuffling toward the little makeshift broom closet in the back of his shop. he grabs the broom and a dustpan and makes his way back to the front.
‘ okay, so - ’ he points to scattered petals and leaves on the ground, ‘ you’ve got to sweep to the left because if you sweep to the right, dust gets caught in the cracks on the floors. this is ... imperative, rex ... i can’t have DIRT ... in my floor. ’ he holds the broom and dustpan out for rex to take, ‘ this isn’t ... gonna set you back, right? ... i ask ‘cos i don’t need anybody comin’ in here yellin at me ‘cos you lost your receipt .... ’

“ W H Y do you say it like that? ” she almost laughed. his reaction was mild compared to some of the ones that she’d gotten over the years. sneers and mocking, were among the most frequent and, occasionally, someone worked up the nerve to throw something to her– though, they thoroughly regretted it later. “ no. not immortality–… that does sound awful, “ she said with a soft shudder in her voice, “ actually! it’s for PROTECTION… there’s some bad juju in this town and people need to be protected from it. “
‘ are you protecting people without them asking? what if what you’re doing has some sort of strange reverse effect and it ends up making things worse? ’ he shakes his head and holds up a hand, ‘ i don’t want you to protect me. don’t need it. leave me out of whatever you’re doing ... ’ he knocks at the top of his counter, ‘ ... will using ... my flowers ... include me regardless ... ? i don’t want that. ’
