There were only a few things that bugged Jaspersprite. Mean people, rotten eggs, and bad fish. Bad fish and stinky things. All three of those things stink. But, some mean people smell good you may say! No. Not to Jaspers. They could smell like the prettiest, fullest rose in the garden and still be so, darn yucky.

Thankfully, Davesprite wasn’t yucky, nor was he mean, and he didn’t smell bad. At least Jaspers doesn’t remember him smelling bad… BUT that is not the point. The point is, is Jaspers if finally going to see Davesprite! It was so nice to finally be on the way to see him, but the snow had really picked up! It’s a good thing the cat can’t feel anything, he thinks, because MAN would it be cold right about now.

Jaspers had been used to the arrow blinking, that was the kind of blinking that it did when you were close to your waypoint. So where is Davesprite? Cupping his hands to his mouth, “Daaaavvveeee?” Jaspers called.

Davesprite had just been chilling somewhere against a tree, his wing curled around himself and eyes cast off in the distance. Right about now he wished he had warmer clothes, the white shirt did little to protect his skin from the nipping of the cold. Not that he could really feel the cold himself, he could just tell that's probably how it would feel. Still, the shirt was torn anyway where the sword was shoved through him, so he merely wrapped his wing tighter around himself, the best he could.

The jeans were in good condition at least, still orange and still form fitting. At least his blood would match them unlike the shirt was was soaked in now dry blood and trained orange around the ripped fabric on his chest.

His attention was brought to Jaspers when he spoke, and right away got up to find him. "Jaspers?" He called back, easily finding him through the snow and giving a half-smile. Really it seemed everyone was going to see his eyes now that he didn't have glasses, well he had them they were just broken and shoved into his pocket. It got to the point he didn't care if anyone saw his eyes. "Sup kitty, kitty?"

Her eyes widened when his hand found its way behind her ear before a rather loud and almost startlingly loud purr left her vocal cords as she curled up in his lap, leaning into his shortened yet still pleasing talons as she closed her eyes. She wasn’t meaning to make those sounds and Davesprite was the only one who actually knows where this spot is but FUCK did it feel good. "You should keep this up." She said softly as she leaned into his chest, her sadness momentarily forgotten.

Well it would continue to prove interesting to hear her purr, something that most normal people couldn't do. For a second he wondered what it would take for him to make chirping noises, and decided to not even bother thinking along those lines because that alone was embarrassing when you were a previous human turned bird-sprite turned human sprite bird thing. How many times he had changed and yet two were way too similar... at least he had legs in this form he supposed.

"Yea, noted. I'll keep scratching you like a cat who's in heat." A little groan left his throat when she leaned into his chest, the sword just digging into him a bit more but he didn't really feel it. Just a strange sensation, like pressure.

He’s batting at his shirt, shaking snow out of his hair when a terribly familiar voice comes drifting over the quiet snowbanks. John scrubs his hand through his hair one final time, before spinning on his heel. The snow crunches underfoot as Dave came morphing out of the listless landscape.

It’s not… the Dave, but rather the sprite John’d spent three years of his life with. Watching him date his ectosis before breaking her heart. Whatever resentment he might’ve held over Davesprite’s head from a bajillion years ago, takes backseat to a rush of confusion. He remembers Davesprite in an eyesearingly pop art orange, with a long, looping tail, and a scruff of feathers ringing his neck. This one resembles the original template a little better- pale skin and nigh colorless hair- but the wings are still there.

(Actually: wing, singular.)

"Holy shit, dude, you look like shit!" he blurts, closing the distance between them at a jog. The closer he gets, the worst Davesprite looks. There’s a sword sticking out of his chest. When he was a sprite, John was willing concede there were going to be some really weirdass design choices happening, including the decorative katana in torso look. But this version of Dave- version of Davesprite- was more human-looking. John isn’t a doctor by any means, but he was going to guess that sword shouldn’t be- couldn’t be there. 

In his panic, he forgets that it is colder than a Outkast song. He crosses his arms, unconsciously trying to warm himself, staring at Davesprite the whole time. The guy can front for days, so John automatically assumes that he could use a medic, judging by that makeshift bandage rather than Davesprite’s casual greeting. The trouble with that is, John does not have anything that he considers useful. He can rip his own shirt for new bandages, but. He kind of needs it.

"What… happened?" he prompts. He’s viscerally reminded that asking any Strider or Lalonde to summarize anything in the entire existence usually results in the verbal equivalent of a thirty page essay in 10pt font. "You can tell me why you look like you went through a garbage disposal while you lead me to the nearest source of warmth, possibly?"

"Oh thanks, captain obvious. It's not like I couldn't tell I looked like complete shit, y'know just a sprite-human form of my previous full on orange self. Sword through the chest and all that jazz, wonder if my wing'll grow back though." He muttered more to himself than to John, moving to pull the sword out a bit before placing it back to its previous position. "At least this thing isn't melted to my skin anymore, so let's all just be thankful I'm not looking as shitty as I could be."

It seemed John really just wanted to talk, and talk, and talk about what the fuck was wrong with him. Pointing it out wasn't enough? He gussed it didn't matter and just shrugged a bit, deciding to at least begin to look around before stretching out his wing so a few flight feathers were just inches away from touching John. 

"The closest source of warmth would be me, sorry dude you wanna get warm you gotta do the snugs." A light chuckle that really amounted to nothing. "Seriously it's cold out and you look more like death than I do, in the cold department. Not that I'm saying to actually touch me or anything I just mean if you're that cold I'm somewhere up in the hundreds when it comes to body temp, or some bullshit. Seriously why the fuck do I take after a bird more than a human? Like I mean now I got legs and obviously a dick as we've talked about in previous convos so wow okay don't ask why I just brought that up. Point being we can't start a fire and I have no clue where any caves or shit are because I just kinda sleep in trees or on the ground. Maybe I'll build a nest..." Was he good at staying on point? Not at all, his mind sort of wandered from one topic to another.

What was it that John wanted to know? Oh yeah, why he looked like shit. That was hard to explain and he supposed he'd bring it up after they at least got somewhere that wasn't piling snow on them, or windy, or as freezing cold as he assumed John was.

"Oh yea, I never thanked you for helping me with my wrist even if you sucked at setting it and wrapping it I think it's actually healing pretty well now." Needless to say he had no idea the other John died, and that this was a new one.

John doesn’t really want to.

He can tell, right off the brilliantly colored warhammer, that something’s off. The isn’t a warm cozy pair of blankets surrounding him. His skin is prickling with goosebumps, and there’s an unfriendly wind tugging at his hair. The troublesome thing is, John can’t rightly remember a time before the game (The Game, in capital letters) when he labeled a breeze as anything besides friendly or playful. He’d much rather stay motionless on the ground, over getting up and trying to figure out why his gut is clenching with unease.

At least for a second or two.

Gradually, his body starts up a role call, firing off all the little aches and bruises that sing up his spinal cord. His back ached and his shoulder joint was considering popping out of its rightful place. It probably had something to do with how awkwardly he was sprawled over the frozen earth. Little pebbles and dirt clods pressed into his cheek.

Well, he didn’t even know if this was technically “Earth”.

God, please let this be Earth, at least.

John Egbert, Master Prankster and Japery Enthusiast, will gladly relinquish his titles, if, when he opened his eyes, he will find that he was on Earth and subject of a pretty far fetched practical joke.

He pushes himself into a sitting position, twisting this way and that, listening to ‘bout a dozen vertebrae pop stiffly back into motion. He inhales once, breathing in nothing but numbing air. Then, he opened his eyes.

"Aw."

It looks… tentatively Earth-like. But if he’s going to trust his instincts, then this is not Earth. Just on account of the fact there was a bigass red moon seared into the sky. John rubs at his face, pushing his glasses into his hair, and caught sight of the band on his wrist, the barcode on his forearm. He glowers. Great. More bullfuckery.

Davesprite was starting to get used to having a sword perpetually just resting inside a crevice that just so happened to be located mid chest, just above his abdomen. It was a cozy little fit and worked nicely for a sheath that he didn't have. Apparently, being part bird helped in the fact that the skin was healing to create an almost bubble and the flesh was no longer infected but rather already healed nicely that he didn't tear it open every time he removed the blade. That was a bit of a lie though because if he moved wrong it would cut into the flesh and reopen a wound. Maybe if he didn't mess with it the sword would just become a part of his body.

Was he really just thinking about a sword being shoved into his chest against his will in a body that wasn't even quite like his old one? Yes, yes he was. What was there better to do than to think of swords and bird anatomy and why the fuck this body wasn't as durable or weird as his previous sprite form. God it was almost hilarious how he singlehandedly decided to think about the object protruding from his chest that wasn't even supposed to be there in a body that was more human than sprite.

The snow was piling up, and the cold he couldn't really feel well. That was the one thing he had going for him though, even if he couldn't quite feel he sure as fuck knew that his temperature was higher than almost anyone, averaging somewhere around 105. That was good, so all he did was wrap his wing around himself, the right one just kind of hanging limp, half arched around himself as the wing ended just at the joint, fabric still wrapped around and clear orange blood having stained the fabric.

He should change those soon, the injury might get infected. Halfway through his thoughts he nearly ran into someone who was just a hair taller than himself. 

His eyes widened, golden hues fixated on a familiar form who had not long ago helped to set his wrist in place. Davesprite had no clue that this John wasn't the one he had previously known, not quite. Not the same but not different either. 

Well this must have been the first time he'd seen him without any shades on, to which he adverted his gaze and gave a halfhearted wave. "Sup loser, you get lost again? Need a ride on my broken ass wings? I'll soar you through no skies because neither of us can really fly." Since powers seemed to be mostly shut off, and his wing was recently cut off...
