Having twicord brain worms…the mlp ship ever…by far my most favorite ship in the astraverse tbh
To make it clear they aren’t really “together” in the AV. Monogamy and marriage is antithetical to Discord’s existence and Twilight eventually gets tired of his bullshit. But! They feed off each other so good
Discord is probably one of the only creatures that’s able to revert Twilight back to her pre-ponyville days. Egotistical, stick in the mud, temperamental, borderline mad scientist etc etc. He’s constantly testing her and making her think outside of the box, and in his own very unhelpful way, he is a mentor of sorts to Twilight. He’s wise in a crazy old man type of way, which intrigues Twilight deeply. He’s older than the princesses and could probably remember a random Tuesday a thousand years before Equestria was established like the back of his paw.
Twilight on the other hand is probably one of the few ponies that Discord truly feels comfortable around. Outside of Fluttershy, he always feels like he has to put on some sort of facade to convince ponies that he isn’t that evil anymore, just slightly malicious. She finds his cryptic advice helpful eventually, albeit much later than when it would’ve been appreciated. If she absolutely had to admit the most attractive thing about him is probably how he keeps her on her toes (hooves?). Being a princess is mostly comprised of paperwork, so the interruption during a mundane task isn’t unwelcome.
They have an on again, off again, push-pull type of relationship. Discord pushes things too far and Twilight wonders why she even let him back in the first place. Give or take a couple days (or weeks) of her ignoring him and trying to act like life as a royal when there aren’t any other worldly threats against ponykind is fulfilling and he eventually pops up again with some outlandish attempt at wooing her. He eventually wiggles his way back into her good graces and the two are seemingly inseparable (more on Discord’s end) until the next time Twilight is exasperated by him.
Discord is absolutely more in love with Twilight than she is with him and he’s fully aware of it. It wasn’t love at first sight, but he appreciated a creature that wasn’t afraid to snap at him even when armed with the knowledge of what he could do to them. The rare moments where Twilight earnestly thanked him for his help in saving Equestria/getting Spike out the house/research regarding chaos magic left him feeling curiously fuzzy inside…if it wasn’t obvious already Discord is painfully starved of affection and overall niceness, it’s why he latched so hard onto Fluttershy after all.
Twilight is different though…something about this hotheaded purple pony princess absolutely broke him and now he’s unable to look at another creature the way he looks at her. He’d rearrange the stars for her! Make her queen of a hundred different dimensions! No, he won’t stop taking cat naps on her antique collections! He’s like a schoolyard colt, being unable to show his affections like a normal creature and instead resorting to being annoying and backhanded.
Twilight doesn’t know why she doesn’t just cut her losses and let this hot mess go. Something about Discord scratches her brain in a way not even the most complex of spells can. She can admit begrudgingly that sometimes he’s charming, and perhaps curling up next to him on a cold night book in hoof isn’t so bad either. If she stands at the right angle he isn’t that hard on the eyes either.
Twilight refuses to admit her feelings for him go deeper than she liked to acknowledge. That’s okay, he expresses enough affection for the two of them.
