today, i logged onto twitter and was met with countless photos of places across america bordering up windows in preparation for the election. today, i was reminded of how lucky i am to live where i do.
the last australian election, i walked down the road to my polling place. i’m lucky enough to have 2 within walking distance of my home. it took me all of 5 minutes to vote and i spent another 20 minutes catching with people that i knew who were also there voting. i grabbed a ‘democracy sausage’ before making my way back home. never once did i have to worry about my safety. never once did i truly fear the detrimental impact that vote would have.
on the eve of this american election, i am reminded of how worlds apart my country seems to be from america. whilst australian politics is far from perfect, i am so grateful that i don’t have to spend weeks upon weeks in an anxious state, watching the never-ending news cycle of trash talk and scandals. i am grateful that i don’t have to fear an outbreak of violence due to election results. i am grateful that i don’t live in a country that has to urge people to vote. i’m grateful that the whole world isn’t watching, judging, or ridiculing while our election process takes place.
to those living in america, my heart is with you. i hope you get the outcome you so desperately deserve. i hope this nightmare can have a somewhat positive bit of closure. stay safe out there.
