This is a once monthly One Direction fic fest where we all rewrite a classic tale with a fandom twist! No sign-up required!

Hi! Welcome to a new One Direction fic fest! Twice Upon A Time!

This is a fest that will run for the entirety of 2022 where every month will have a classic tale as the prompt and all who are interested can write their own version with a 1D fandom twist. No sign-up required.

The prompts have already been chosen and are listed below, so you may start writing for as few or as many as you like at any time. You only need to post your fics in the associated collections by the required deadlines, which will be covered in the rules.

Below is the list of fairytale/folktale prompts for each month. There are also links to Wikipedia articles for every prompt in case you aren’t familiar or need a quick refresher.

Hi! Sadly, I don't plan on running this fest again this year. I'd love to, but I just don't have the time or energy. December Fic Prompt:

Cinderella

"Cinderella" is a folk tale with thousands of variants throughout the world. The protagonist is a young woman living in forsaken circumstances that are suddenly changed to remarkable fortune, with her ascension to the throne via marriage.

You don’t have to stick strictly to the prompt. Make it your own! Just give us at least a glimmer of the source material. And don’t forget, all pairings including at least one member of 1D are welcome!

November Fic Prompt:

Little Red Riding Hood

"Little Red Riding Hood" is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a sly wolf. Its origins can be traced back to several pre-17th century European folk tales. The two best known versions were written by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm.

Life got hard, so this month got skipped. I’m sorry for anyone who may have wanted to participate. Just let me know if you have a fic to add to the collection.

The Princess and the Pea

"The Princess and the Pea"  is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a young woman whose royal ancestry is established by a test of her sensitivity.

Sleeping Beauty

"Sleeping Beauty" is a classic fairy tale about a princess who is cursed to sleep for a hundred years by an evil fairy, to be awakened by a handsome prince at the end of them. The good fairy, realizing that the princess would be frightened if alone when she awakens, uses her wand to put every living person and animal in the palace asleep, to awaken when the princess does.

August Fic Prompt:

The Ugly Duckling  

"The Ugly Duckling" (Danish: Den grimme ælling) is a Danish literary fairy tale by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. 

In the story, after a mother duck's eggs hatch, one of the ducklings is perceived by the other animals as an ugly little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse. He wanders from the barnyard and lives with whoever will take him in but always ends up getting teased and taunted mercilessly, and so he sets off alone.

After a long time alone, the duckling, now having fully grown and matured, cannot endure a life of solitude and hardship any more. He decides to throw himself at a flock of swans, feeling that it is better to be killed by such beautiful birds than to live a life of ugliness. He is shocked when the swans welcome and accept him, only to realize by looking at his reflection in the water that he had been not a duckling but a swan all this time. 

Andersen first conceived the story in 1842 while enjoying the beauty of nature during his stay at the country estate of Bregentved, and lavished a year's worth of attention upon it. He initially considered "The Young Swans" as the tale's title but, not wanting to spoil the element of surprise in the protagonist's transformation, discarded it for "The Ugly Duckling". He later confessed that the story was "a reflection of my own life", and, when the critic Georg Brandes questioned Andersen about whether he would write his autobiography, the poet claimed that it had already been written.

Eventually, they decide to run away and become town musicians in the city of Bremen. The Nightingale

"The Nightingale" is a literary fairy tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen about an emperor who prefers the tinkling of a bejeweled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale. When the mechanical bird breaks and the Emperor is near death, the nightingale's song restores his health. The tale is believed to have been inspired by the author's unrequited love for opera singer Jenny Lind, the "Swedish nightingale".
