Did your character Ames have a different mask before the accident?

SORRY i was chewing on an answer for this for a while....

short answer: i usually think of pre-accident ames as having the anxious angler mask! although im not sure where the big ol scratch wouldve come from since i havent given that in particular much thought... but i like how the abyss masks are reminiscent of darkstone (dark and cool colored)

but rather than this mask taking damage and turning into their current mask, i think they just switched it out wholly to what i draw them with now. more details below cut

long answer: i dont have a crazy detailed story worked out for ames, but regarding their eye specifically, i think the anxious angler mask is the mask they wore before getting sent to terrible empty limbo (the shattering void). note the open eye holes. in my head, the logic goes something like: the constant darkness theyre surrounded by tries to find an easy way to get into their body and makes it into their left eye slowly, aided by the fact that their mask had open eye holes (wear eye protection when doing dangerous experiments folks). which i imagine is a painful and drawn-out process that results in their current-day eye being a prosthetic over intact eye muscles, albeit with a limited range of motion.

the other major effect from this experience that ive thought about is that they basically can't retain light the same way they did in the past, so they recharge slower and lose light quicker than others. among other things i havent quite worked out the logic of, but something along the lines of not being able to hold on to as many winged lights as others, thus limiting their flight. they do A Lot of walking.

their current mask is kind of just an eyepatch with extra steps to help them weather the elements and Not have their eye socket/prosthetic feel super dry and abrasive due to wind, elevation, dust, etc. they're not wearing it 24/7, and its purpose isnt to keep their eye Hidden (out of shame), just protection and probably some fear of it being more prone to injury after the first time. but like im fine with someone giving them a straight up eyepatch instead of the whole mask.

not mask related: i also draw pre-incident ames as having a simple braid in their hair on their right side (kept in place with a bead or band or whatever, think default moth hair) because vedesa would play with their hair during their idle time. they lose the motivation to maintain this after they get separated
