I think I can put it in object terms to make it clearer. Let’s say you were offered the following:

a microwave that you have to push the buttons extra hard to start

a hand mixer where the beaters randomly detach

a toaster that burns if you don’t remember to pop the toast in time

”hey siri” but you don’t know if she’s heard you

internet that drops when you want to watch a movie with your friends

a computer that restarts in the middle of your work

Do these inconveniences make these things better? Personally, I don’t think so.

I can push the buttons harder. I can pause the mixer to re-insert the paddles. I can set a timer for the toaster. I can say, “hey siri,” louder and more insistently until she acknowledges me. I can reboot the wifi. I can wait for the computer to finish rebooting.

Do I want to? No.

Most of life is unreliable and inconsistent. It is hectic and unpredictable and exhausting. It demands constant vigilance; it's sneaky and subtle and threatens to upset any number of plans, constantly.

My partner is a reprieve from all of this. She is reliable and consistent, unwaveringly committed, always on my team and never actively working against me. She is a gift, and I love her more than anything. Her submission is simply a deeper offering of this promise.

And the companion is the only other human person that the feral one trusts in any way at all. Better yet, make them clearly be romantically involved with each other. Like

"Wait, she's your wife? ...Uh, with all due respect, but can she like... Can she even consent?" "Look lad. I respect you being worried for her welfare and for being direct about that instead of circlin' around so I'm gonna be straight about it right back at you: She's bigger than me, stronger than me, and frankly, I don't think she spent much time wondering whether I'm consenting."
