if there was one thing jonah had learned throughout his life, it was this; bad days got a lot worse before they got better. this theory was semi-proven when - five minutes into his arrival at the block party - someone decide they wanted to moonwalk into his left side. which, you know... would’ve been fine. if he hadn’t had a full cup of beer in his hand. now he stood next to the dimly lit side of the public restrooms, trying to figure out how to get the large stain out of his shirt without being too obvious.
maybe it was the fact that he was still at the beginning of his anger management classes. or maybe he was just too tired and not intoxicated enough to deal with human interaction. whatever it was, when jonah saw the shadow of a person make its way into his personal space, he shot a frustrated look in their direction. “ oh, what? you’re so perfect you’ve never had a bad day? ” he spat, immediately hating how angry he sounded.
“ COME ON ! ” a roguish grin replaces pensive chapped lips as hickory eyes explore the vibrant surroundings — bustling with residents in the midst of chatter, competition, and laughter. “ i reckon i meet the height requirements for the bouncy castles and it’d be a shame to let that go to waste, don’t ‘ya think? here’s the game plan … ” pointer finger taps his temple one time before he points it in the direction of the bouncy castles, “ i’ll go in and throw all the kids out, then we take it over — like king of the castle. anybody tries to come in? we zap ‘em ! ” a pause as he pulls the can from his back pocket, brows wiggling playfully, “ with silly string, of course. ”
jonah wasn’t nearly as drunk as he wanted to be. he had originally planned on drinking before the event started, but a parent he knew all-too-well had entered the liquor store and spooked him into leaving. that being said - when an all-too-familiar face spun into view and nearly made him lose his footing - it wasn’t a smile playing at the edge of the teenager’s lips. “ i’ll take some of whatever you’re on, ” jonah muttered under his breath.
the young myers crossed his arms and glanced in the direction of the bouncy house. “ it’s a dumb idea. i mean, really. what makes you think we can take on a bunch of kids? ” he asked, trying his best to be... well, civil. “ haven’t you been near one? they’re like demons. ” and you’re an idiot, he added - inside his head, for once.
the block party was, as usual, booming. although there was really nothing to celebrate about—no milestone to mark (besides the end of summer—that didn’t count), chase enjoyed the festivities. children were running around, teenagers were sneaking off, adults were lounging in the tent, and chase had spent half of the morning hovering near the aforementioned tent with a paper plate stuffed with various finger food while downing can after can of tepid beer. as a person approached, he found himself speaking, voice slightly slurred from the vast amounts of liquor he’d already consumed. “i’d avoid the shrimp,” he begins with a grin. “i saw, like, three people run off to the bathroom pretty quick after having one. seems like a recipe for disaster. unless you’re into that,” he added cheekily.
just like he’d anticipated, the elder cunningham lost sight of his family five minutes into the block party. he knew he’d see them later. this happened every year. his kids had their friends - and acquaintances - to seek out, while he chose to walk around and scope out the area. the neighborhood ran the same kind of event every year, and yet, somehow, each year it felt a little bit different.
and - each year - don always found himself standing in front of the snack table, trying to assess what looked edible. a young girl to his right pressed one hand to her mouth. she ran away a moment later, and he watched her go, eyebrows propping up in suspicion.
luckily, a familiar face was there to fill him in on the little charade. “ ah, ” don half-laughed, hoping it really was the shrimp and not some wretched stomach bug. “ how do i know you’re not just trying to keep it all for yourself? ” don asked, curious eyes landing on the circular platter.
There was a road that’s a dead end with no houses in sight. A symphony of nature is the only thing she’s listening to, drowning out that the sounds from the block party. The whistling of the Easterly winds rustling through the tree leaves, all the leaves on the trees a vibrant green and healthy tacked onto the twigs. In the far distance, the tiny waves of the ocean slushing against the shoreline ever so faint but oh so noticeable. What could be heard the most was the crickets chirping, hiding in the long unkempt grass clinging to the edge of the road. The road itself is old and unused in decades, seeing as there are ripples of veins cracking the road with sprouts of grass peeking out. Nothing but the sound of nature to clear one’s head from toxins of an over-thinking brain and sobering up.
Positioning oneself in the middle of the road, you get the perfect stargazing place in town with the tops of green treetops framing the starry sky above. Though the stars and space was more her Daphne’s thing, she enjoyed viewing them as well. Laying flat on her back as she stares above at the sky with the cheap liquor bottle at her side. With her slender fingers trailing up and down the cold condensation coating her fingertips. Being so zoned out she not realise someone had approached her.
Yet her tawny irises shot to the direction of the person without realising it. “Before you ask what happens if a car comes? I do entice you to tip your chin to the road, should answer that question.” Her dreamy tone seeping out to touch the tree trunks nearby rather than the person. Orbs shifting back to the stars.
on nights like these, when the young myers’ head felt too full and his heart felt too heavy, he liked to be alone. while the other inhabitants of goldstone moved their hips to a catchy pop song and drowned themselves in six types of alcohol, jonah found himself walking through the nearby forest; a sudden escape he’d been planning for hours. he was almost sure no one would look for him. his father, to put lightly, wasn’t a concern to him, and he hadn’t seen any of his siblings since the festivities had started. still, as the brunette stepped deeper and deeper into the wood, he couldn’t help but glance back every so often.
when he finally reached the familiar road he’d been looking for, the last thing he expected to see was someone lying in the middle of it. he took a hesitant step forward - heart seemingly trying to break out of his rib-cage - only stopping when he realized the girl was very much alive. well, that was different. a girl around his age, out and about. lying in the middle of the road... by choice. it was something out of a nicholas sparks book. not that he’d ever read one in full.
jonah nearly jumped out of his shoes when the girl acknowledged his existence. if he’d been in the right state of mind, he would’ve turned around and left. instead - he found himself dropping to the ground next to the “thrill-seeker” - something unreadable flashing across his gaze. “ doesn’t mean i can’t pretend. ” jonah shrugged, reaching back to use his arm as a head-rest.
muse 16, henrik holm, eighteen, he/him. ☼ * ⋆ : hey, check it out, it’s JONAH MYERS! everyone calls ‘em J, though. aren’t they a HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR now? man, time flies. isn’t their birthday coming up soon? it’s AUGUST 4TH, 2001, right? i gotta get them a present – i heard they like MESSY BUNS, LOUD MUSIC, NATURE. and, like, don’t tell anyone, but i think they ARE IN ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES. ( lolly, 24, est. )
NICKNAME: J.
SEXUALITY: he likes people. in general. a lot.
SOME FACTS:
he never had a close relationship with his father. sure, the two would talk and occasionally throw a ball back and forth, but there was something missing between them. and he wasn’t sure he’d ever figure out what it was.
it was different with his mother. he was distant, for the most part - always residing to his room when he got home from school - but she would force her way into his life and leave a mark he wouldn’t know he needed.
she, along with his siblings, meant something to him (even if he didn’t always show them in physical gestures). and when she passed away so suddenly, something snapped inside of him.
he couldn’t stop the anger from festering inside of him. it wasn’t fair. how could this happen? how could the universe allow this to happen to him? it didn’t help when his father showed up - someone he hardly remembered - and they had to readjust to their so-called happy family.
he got into his first fight that summer. he punched a kid right in the nose, leaving him to bleed while his friends tried to help him up. it only got worse as time went on, and he started getting sent home for aggressive behavior.
eight or so months ago, he stood outside a bar with a fake ID. a boy his age bumped into him and called him a name he didn’t fully make out. the only thing jonah remembers from that night is sitting in the back of a police car; tired eyes locked on the bloody mess.. the one he’d created.
he was forced into anger management classes, after that. music and his classes have helped him so far, but he still struggles.
THAT PERSONALITY:
jonah is a complicated soul, as most of us are during our high school years. he’s still trying to come to terms with who he is, and it leads him to be a bit distant/reserved.
it’s not that he’s unkind... he just doesn’t want to trust the wrong person. he doesn’t want to get close to someone and then have them leave him, like his mother did.
he’s aggressive. little things set him off, but mostly because he reads situations wrong. he’s quick-tempered and always assumes the worst, even if his heart is telling him he’s wrong.
he has a lot of love to give. if only he knew how to do this without punishing himself in the process.
he’s intelligent. once you get him talking about something he enjoys, he might not stop for hours.
WANTED (dead or alive):
a fling. can be someone he met in school, or maybe he met them at a party. serious?? not serious??? booty call??? angsty? throw it all at me.
a best friend/confidant. jonah isn’t very good at forming connections with people. this person would’ve had to knock down his defenses and showed him he could trust them no matter what. i’m even down for a trio.
an ex. maybe the two absolutely hate each other, or maybe they pushed each other away. they could’ve been each other’s firsts. they can still be friends, now.
enemies. face it. we all have enemies in high school. people we don’t necessarily enjoy, for whatever reason.
a "maybe we can try”. someone jonah didn’t expect to like as much as he does, and yeah, maybe the thought scares him. he doesn’t want to get hurt. but he doesn’t like “what ifs”, either.
muse 8, charlie hunnam, thirty-nine, he/him. ☁ * ⋆ : aw, look at this photo! it’s DONALD CUNNINGHAM with their family! they’re a FIREFIGHTER, right? this photo must have been before HIS ACCIDENT, but after HE HAD FOUR KIDS. i heard that when they were younger, they used to ROCK CLIMB FOR THE THRILL – i can’t imagine them doing that now! man… i wonder if their family knows they ARE PARTIALLY BLIND IN ONE EYE. ( lolly, 24, est. )
NICKNAME: don.
SEXUALITY: heterosexual.
SOME FACTS:
he originally planned to go to school for environmental science. a friend of his joked about how he’d look sexy as a firefighter, and, alas, the idea didn’t seem so bad.
insert info on how he met his wife here.
it was frustrating; the idea of them not being able to have kids, when plenty of others could do so without a problem. she wanted to try a fertility treatment - a one last resort kind of thing - and he was more than supportive of this.
then the treatment ended up working too well, and he wasn’t sure they’d be able to juggle work and four kids without a whole lot of “we’re getting a divorce!” arguments. somehow, they did it. four kids. all theirs. for a second time in his life, he was genuinely happy.
when their children turned ten years old, don got into a major accident on the job. his line of work was never easy, but on this particular day... he wasn’t sure how he’d made it out alive.
he was hospitalized for nearly a month, undergoing multiple surgeries and treatments. when he finally woke up - on a day that felt like any other - he realized something was off. his right eye... it could only recognize shapes. everything looked fuzzy. his accident had left him partially blind.
he couldn’t let his family know. he didn’t want them to worry about him anymore than they’d already had, especially when they had their own troubles to deal with. as far as he’s concerned, no one knows about his eye, and he doesn’t plan on telling anyone anytime soon.
A PERSONALITY:
don is incredibly kind to everyone he meets. sure, he has his bad days, as we all do, but he’s a genuine human being who likes to help people whenever he can.
he likes to make people laugh. besides his eyes, the first thing people compliment him about is his sense of humor. he’s the guy at the bar who cracks a joke every five seconds (you either love him for it or want him to leave).
he likes to think he’s good at being a dad, but he definitely has his flaws. being in a field that requires him to protect other people made him stricter than he’d intended to be. he’s over-protective and quite irrational at times, especially when it comes to change.
after his accident, he became moodier than usual. sometimes he snaps randomly, without thinking. other times, he comes home and closes his bedroom door, as a way to say “i don’t want to be bothered”.
WANTED (dead or alive):
an ex? someone who refuses to believe they’re over, even though he’s been married for years. or maybe he slept with someone before he met his wife, and he has a child he doesn’t know about.
a best friend/partner-in-crime. maybe they work with him? or they know him from highschool? maybe the two grew up together, and they’re the only one who knows about his secret? or maybe they don’t, and that could cause angsty issues later on.
enemies. people who are jealous of him or just don’t like him in general. someone he’s tried getting along with, but they just don’t click.
someone he’s saved in the past. the two have kept in contact all this time, and they’ve kind of found something they’ve been missing all this time. platonic or past-romantic.
