remy froze solid in her place — midway through a hurried stride to her bus stop, which was waiting about a few hundred feet past q. she had tried to be so careful. skipped town on a bus with nothing but the clothes on her back. used a fake surname. tried to cover her back with cloaking magic, but her spellwork wasn't nearly as advanced as other members of her family. all of it brought him here — right in front of her. remy's insides were in turmoil; a mix of emotions swirling and crashing inside of her. fear, of course. but also, an underlying feeling of guilt. at having caused him such pain and struggle. dread dripped into her stomach at his offhanded compliment, her bottom lip trembling. ❛ i'm not going back there. ❜ she said, with as much bravado as she could muster, even though her voice wavered.

one hand curled at her side, and she could already feel the power growing steadily in her palms — aching to be set free. could feel the tendrils of nearby trees crawling underneath the dirt beneath the concrete road they both stood on. itching to heed her call. all she had to do was summon them. with enough force, maybe she could break through the asphalt itself; maybe buy her enough time to scramble away. ( did she even possess that kind of power? ) she managed to surprise herself before.

❛ please. d-don't...don't make me hurt you. ❜ a lie, and they both knew it. remy could never hurt a fly, not intentionally. at the same time, there was a pit of desperation in her soul not to go back to that gods damned place. ❛ just let me go. say you lost me, or...something. ❜ voice drops, eyes filling up with hot tears that threatened to spill over onto already reddening cheeks. ❛ please. ❜ she was actually begging, which she knew was pathetic. but, she didn't think she had in her to actually harm someone. even if it meant her freedom. much less him. q had always been somewhat kind to her, trapped in that...place. maybe it was her own naivety talking, but she felt in her heart that he didn't really mean to cause her any pain or hardship.

Her refusal to return was expected. Predictable. Shit. Quinn didn’t even blame her. It didn’t matter where it was or who ran it or what it was called. The Facility, the Agency, the pit of Hell. It was a place he had to return himself and the asset to. That’s how he had to view her. View all of them. As objects and not people. It was how Quinn had desensitized himself to the torture and dehumanizing experiments. That was all he had ever known. Taken from an orphanage at a young age, Gilbert Quinn was a distant name that held little meaning to Q anymore.

That boy he had been, the one that had fought back and tried to escape was no more. He died a long, long time ago. They had successfully broken him. At least. That was what Q told himself. Had to make himself believe in order to complete his mission. A retrieval mission. One more than meant to test him, but they were always doing that. Testing his loyalty. Especially when they noticed the slightest hint of favoritism towards the green magic user before him. Remy. No, no, the asset. The asset. His mission.

Quinn shifted the weight on his feet. An old injury to his right leg was bothering him with the cool weather in this particular part of the world. His hands slipped into his pockets, warming them against the cold but also taking hold of the small item he would use to incapacitate Remy. There were many ways he could accomplish that and although he didn’t expect her to truly hurt him, not enough to get him to stop anyway, despite her warning.

Quinn knew that desperate feeling he saw dancing in her eyes, a desperation only conjured by the prospect of returning to captivity. The feral desperation of an animal. Q was more shadow than a person now. Just how they wanted him to be. Perfect soldier, perfect puppet. Even with the machine in him ready to counter any attack, magic or otherwise, Remy might throw at him. Quinn didn’t want to hurt her anymore than she did him. 

The idea. The mere thought of letting her go was a foreign one. Something Q hadn't even entertained before she said it. His mind swirled for a second, the image of just letting her leave this place without resistance or any efforts to stop her made his brow furrow, confused almost that he’d managed to picture the whole scenario in the brief moments before she said please. "I don't lose things," Q said, head dipping downward a bit to look at her past his brow, his way of saying that he couldn't let her go. He couldn't.

noel looks down as she takes one of his hands in her own, then back up at her beautiful smile. he chuckles at her comment. it definitely makes the air feel lighter and his body relaxes. "that's very kind of you," he grins back. the blond stays quiet for a moment, trying to calm his spiraling thoughts. but raven's here, and she's the best thing he has going on right now. and the fact that she's so tender with him, it makes him want to melt into her. and he rests his head on her shoulder, kissing it softly. it's not entirely sexual, it's soft and appreciative. "i... i just hate when i get like this. but you being here helps," noel looks up into her eyes and says the words he hasn't uttered since the night they officially broke up. "i love you, rae."

For all her confidence, work ethic and professionalism. All the efforts she made in keeping herself look and appear like a woman who had absolutely everything handled, that she had her shit together. It was far from the truth. Raven was a good actress. She had to be. It was necessary for her to survive a world that was not designed for someone like her to succeed. 

Despite that and despite her father's control. Raven had found a way to thrive, to rebel and to love. Because that's what this was, right? The way her heart thudded against her chest and made every nerve ending on stand on edge and heightened to Noel's body. In tune the way he breathed, the way he moved and how he touched her. But it was more than that, more than just physical. Though, that part was so damn good too. 

Something inside her flipped in her stomach and then lodged itself in her throat, making it impossible to respond right away. His words moved over her and she had the same reaction she had when Noel had first expressed his love for her. Panic. Shock. And again she was in the boat of not knowing what to do because she felt the same. Surely she couldn’t mean that much to him? Raven was so used to just being a beautiful body shown off by people, wearing her like an accessory. But she was more than that to Noel. 

She was moving before she could stop herself, her hands pressing against his chest as she shifted closer to him and leaned in to press a kiss to his lips. It wasn't a kiss just to cover up the fact he'd said he loved her, or for the way he thanked her for just being there. It was the only way Raven knew she could get her feelings across before her brain and mouth made them more complicated than they needed to be. “I know you do,” she said after she pulled away enough to speak, her eyes moving from his lips up to meet his gaze. “I love you too, dummy.” The term dummy used as a term of endearment than anything else.
