saw a tweet that anya, who has jumped from orphanage to orphanage and house to house at such a young age, is building her perception of love through twilight and yor: the reassuring words twilight says to yor, yor’s constant acts of service for her family, and their overall warmth and trust to depend on one another, despite initially being complete strangers.

what i love about that and spy x family as a whole is that it doesn’t enforce love as something purely romantic or physical, but that it’s everywhere. love is in yor’s burnt fried eggs and twilight’s nagging to get homework done. it’s in the peanuts in the pantry, the family ootings, and in each stitch in anya’s penguin plush. despite having a rough childhood, it’s likely that anya will grow knowing that love is limitless and is sprinkled throughout everyday life, thanks to twilight and yor (and bond).

of course, love can also mean kissing

thought it was interesting how loid tells yor that he thought she was beautiful, but when anya appears, yor immediately blames herself for trying to ask out a guy who is clearly “taken”, but in reality, shouldn’t she be suspicious of loid for calling her beautiful when he has a child and (presumably) a wife?

yor is in a career (would you call it that? i don’t know) that involves a lot of “bad guy, good guy” circumstances. in her point of view and in the garden’s point of view, yor kills the evil people and is a silent hero, a weapon only to be used for the worst of the worst. despite this, yor is a woman who sees only the best in others. she doesn’t simply assume one’s flaws and mistakes but beats herself up over her own.

now this lifestyle can also be related to twilight’s own character— he was trained to perfection, except with the opposite effect: assume the worst case scenario, the worst quality in a person, the worst choice to be made, and prepare for anything that could happen. like how he recognizes yor’s attentiveness and deems it to potentially be a detriment to his work:

this is a mindset he has been honing for years, and it is the pure definition of perfection.

and that’s why i find it so endearing that thorn princess (the best assassin of ostania) and twilight (the best spy of westalis), are both navigating the unknowns of parenting a small child together. this isn’t much like a deduction skill or a physical skill one can train for, but it is a skill that cannot be completely perfected. and that is what is so new to them.

but another difference is that they are not learning alone, compared to their own isolation in the jobs they have, but that they can rely on one another for guidance. whenever one downplays their parenting abilities, the other is ready to reassure them and that they are doing well.

twilight also ends up being the most rational person (albeit a severe overthinker and becoming a cringy dad in anya’s eyes) in the forger family and yor is known to be the doting and sweet mother under almost any circumstance (even if she’s overthinker #2 and will kill to protect anya) thanks to their abilities. a perfect balance despite being direct opposites and a perfect 100 points

(idk how to end this i just think twiyor is so lovely and adorable and the similarities and direct differences they have are so intriguing to me and i need them to be canon asap and i need that butt shot episode right now i cannot physically restrain myself to wait until next year in this essay i will)

Loid and Yor are the world's most supportive parents. One time Anya had a play in school, Loid would cancel his missions in a blink of an eye and Yor would take a day off from City Hall and informing the Shopkeeper to let her off from assassinations for one day because her daughter will be performing in a play and SHE NEEDS TO BE THERE TO WITNESS EVERY SECOND. They'll cheer the loudest and will spend the rest of day roaming in the city with their daughter and gets her everything she wants.

And Anya is just happy to be around her parents and that's all she needs to be happy.

BUT THIS IS SO CUTE considering that this is the first time anya’s felt such support and love from anyone i know this means so much 😭 compared to her classmates she’s never had that fear of no one showing up because she knows that they’re smiling with a camcorder of some sort in the audience.

i feel like loid and yor also end up becoming everyone’s honorary parents too, but mainly yor. she feels absolutely terrible for the kids with busy and wealthy parents that never bothered to show up (cough damian cough), so yor always brings a bouquet of roses to give out to anya’s classmates (and gives non-bone crushing hugs if they want some) so that they feel included and recognized as well :)

in loid’s case, he finds this to be a surplus of information. he immediately goes into twilight mode, but seeing his girls be so happy makes him think that work can be put off for now. (it would be weird to ask these six year olds such serious things anyway, he thinks) instead of discreetly interrogating these rich children who are offspring of the most powerful people in the country, he gives them a high five and a “good job”, watching fondly as anya and yor interact with the other kids

i definitely agree with you on the fact that they would spoil the hell out of anya omg… i feel like what happens though is that anya just asks for peanuts and then wants to go home to play with bond because she’s too tired (same).

but its a guaranteed that anya will be hearing her and her classmates' performance replaying for weeks on end bc twilight and yor cannot stop gushing over her 😭

Requesting headcannon please! Headcannon where twiyor think anya's moving out when she's 18 and she reassures them she'll always be close

so sorry this is late bc i just finished finals! but ouuu this is an interesting headcanon i haven't considered before. i feel like it would be one of those things that she constantly sees in her parents' thoughts and just always reassure them about, but it's just always a recurring thought in their heads. what if she's just saying it to make us feel better? wouldn't anya be better off without her parents?

and she's always like "mama. papa. i told you i'm moving in the apartment on the fourth floor. you can literally go to my place in less than twenty seconds"

on moving day, loid and yor are slowly unpacking the boxes and sobbing at nearly every small thing. like they would see anya's beat up penguin plush that loid got her more than a decade ago, its fabric faded with its limp shape, and they would start blubbering about how long its been since then: "oh loid / [redacted], look at mr. penguin!" yor would sob, hugging it forcibly. loid would hold back tears and wrap his arm around her shoulder, also holding back his tears (and failing) while anya just stands there like 🧍‍♀️

"mama and papa are being so sappy."

what probably ends up happening is that anya unpacks everything herself while loid and yor are absolutely losing it over the smallest things in the background

reading chapter 66 for the first time and why does nobody talk about how creepy melinda desmond can be. like from what i've seen on twitter i thought she was just another bubbly mother like yor but these panels are going to show up in my nightmares tonight

i really feel terrible for damian growing up with such negligence from his parents, not to mention how they WILLINGLY don't give him as much attention as a 6 year old probably needs. i hope he visits the forger family sometime in the future and gets showered with love by them because i know they would treat him so well (partially for twilight's mission but also because they're naturally just like that <3)

i have a headcanon that sometimes yor has twilight tie up her hair before going out, whether it be before work at city hall or before a family ooting.

the first time she brought it up was with a teasing lilt, but twilight took it so seriously. she immediately apologized when she realized that twilight was really going to attempt her signature hairstyle, so one thing led to another and suddenly she was standing in front of twilight as his fingers ran through her long black hair and analyzed however the hell she did this every morning. anya, who was eating her breakfast, watched intently with a smirk on her face, listening to her parents’ racing thoughts with their match pink blush dusting their cheeks and the tips of their ears. it took him a while (longer than twilight wants to admit), but as he slid her headband to secure her hair he exhaled a breath he didn't even know he was holding.

as time went on, it became a frequent occurrence. it was less of a sheepish request and became more of a routine for the two of them. sometimes twilight would even offer to do her hair as she got ready for work. he enjoyed the silk of her hair through his fingers anyway.

franky would inquire as to why twilight always had a hair tie on his wrist, and one of yor's headbands in his right coat pocket, where he would subsequently swoon when twilight revealed it was for yor and anya. "just in case," twilight would stammer out as franky continues to mercilessly tease him.

sometimes the opposite would happen. twilight would be reading peacefully, occasionally pushing his hair back away from his eyes, which catches yor's attention. "loid?" she says quietly, fiddling with a hair tie in her hands while taking a seat next to him. "do you want me to tie your hair up? i noticed you were pushing your bangs back so..." yor trails off sheepishly as twilight gives her an affectionate gaze. "i mean, if you don't want to it's okay! i'm sorry for overstepping, even if i AM supposed to be your wife-"

"i would love for you to tie my hair up, yor."

and so she does with an affirmative hum, gently bunching up his bangs and skillfully knotting the elastic through his blonde strands, before moving back and marveling at how adorable her husband is.

twilight doesn't care that he, the best spy of westalis, has his hair tied up like a palm tree on a sunny beach. twilight doesn't care that he's playing the role of loid forger to the fullest extent. twilight doesn't care about the warm feeling in his chest blooming like a rose bud, its thorns engulfing his thoughts and reminding him that this is all fake, a facade, a small stepping point in operation strix.

but it certainly doesn't hurt to pretend it's all real.

one panel in the manga that will consistently ruin me is where twilight is getting an apple tart for his fake wife (who really likes apples) and a nut cake for his fake daughter (who happens to particularly enjoy peanuts)

yes, they’re in a fake family, and all of the members of that family understand that they are in a familial relationship with him out of convenience. however, twilight doesn’t act like his family is fake. he has no need to remember his wife’s favorite fruit and daughter’s favorite food if they’re in a fake family. and yet, he doesn’t act like his family is fake. he tries. they all try.

one could argue that twilight was doing this to uphold his image as a doting husband and father, but any bystander wouldn’t know that. he’s a man at a bakery stand alone, and anyone can assume that he’s simply there after a long day of work to indulge in a few sweet treats. twilight could have also easily bought pastries solely for himself, but this is emphasis on how his daughter and wife never leave his mind. even if it’s a fake family, they have a real bond (pun intended). they have lived together, they have grown together, they’ve learned to be a part of a family, and they’ve experienced the highs and lows of daily life together.

living life in such unstable families and absent presences of parental figures makes it hard for them to recognize it, but this is truly what a family feels like.

& this is simply another point to add onto the list on how twilight is doing virtually everything “for the mission”

Someone in the inbox asked about Anya's hair. SxF is one of those series which is relatively good with Anya and Yor's hair - it's mostly tied up on occasions when it needs to be tied up.

So, here's a cute little detail, or well, it's my HC anyway... Yor ties Anya's hair up in ponytails, Twilight ties his daughter's hair up in pigtails.

When Anya trains with Yor in the dodgeball episode, we see her hair into ponytails or a little bun. This is also true in the latest Campbelldon episode, and the next one as well when Fiona challenges Yor. Anya is with Yor in all of these episodes - we can infer that it's mama who ties her hair up into ponytails. Which makes sense, as that's how Yor ties up her own hair when she needs to.

On the other hand, in the Stellar episode where Anya goes to the hospital to volunteer with Twilight, we see her hair in pigtails. She is, of course, also in pigtails at the end of the Cruise Arc when the family gets to spend a day playing together on the resort island. Yor had been busy throughout the trip doing... things. Twilight's the one who has to look after Anya. And well... pigtails.

they are literally within kiss distance; one little nudge from anya or bond and they are OVER. this is the worst case of slow burn i've ever encountered they are RIGHT THERE. all the romance animes with slow burn do not compare to whatever twiyor has going on like i need them to genuinely do something where yor isn't drunk, yuri isn't going crazy, and twilight isn't doing it "for the mission". can twilight reserve an anya head pat (tm) for yor i'm absolutely going crazy. the way this anime is a slice of life action anime and the main characters are like two protagonists in a romance where everyone and their mothers want them to get together... tatsuya endo please hear our pleas

loid "for the mission" forger, who proposes to his wife with a grenade pin, takes out his wife and daughter to experience the finest indulgences the town can offer, almost punch an interviewer for making his (fake) daughter cry, celebrate his daughter's acceptance to school by renting out an entire castle and asking his coworkers to assist him with making an elaborate obstacle course for her, ask his wife out on a date because her well-being is crucial to the mission, set up cheesy bedsheets and photoshopped couple pictures to make his relationship with his "wife" more believable, feels guilty after suspecting his wife for knowing information about her SSS brother, wins a giant penguin plush for his daughter, pretends to be a penguin with his "robot" wife to make his daughter happy, agrees to adopt a dog used by a terrorist group for his daughter, fawn over his daughter (along with his wife) as she falls asleep with the family dog, waits for his wife to come home so they can eat together as a family, indulges in his wife's stew (despite being fearful for his stomach), brags about how his daughter can "jump over two vaulting boxes" and "jump rope five times in a row" to his boss, attempts to change his daughter's test answers out of fear of her failing, invites his wife to lunch after bumping into her on the street, lets his daughter play with the sandbox in his office (before being increasingly worried about her happiness seeing the chaotic scene she made), becoming defensive when a fellow coworker suggests that his (fake) wife should be replaced, repairing his daughter's toy penguin, walking his dog alongside his daughter regularly, contemplates asking his fake wife to be his REAL wife, lets himself enjoy his wife's humming for a bit while lying on her lap unconscious, constantly reassuring his (fake!) wife that she's doing a wonderful job as a mother and wife, letting his emotions slip through his trained facade as a spy and seeping through his fond looks and smiles for his family, looking at his wife as if through a shoujo manga filter, spends the day with his daughter on a cruise and saying that it was "lonesome" his wife wasn't able to join them for dinner, having an entire family day filled with activities and carrying his sleeping daughter and wife at the same time and looking at them with loving exasperation and a soft smile before heading home together as a family, and writes an entire original manga series complete with voiceovers so his daughter can retain her school studies.

considering how long this took me to write, i have a feeling some of these things aren't too important for the mission, twilight
