Cement is made through a multi-stage process that transforms naturally occurring minerals into a fine hydraulic powder, most commonly Portland cement, you start with the extraction of raw materials—primarily limestone like calcium carbonate, and clay or shale, sources of silica, alumina, and iron. which are crushed and blended in carefully controlled proportions to achieve the desired chemical composition, this raw mix is then ground into a fine powder and fed into a rotary kiln, a long, slightly inclined, rotating steel cylinder heated to about 1,450 °C, where it undergoes a series of chemical reactions: first the limestone decomposes into calcium oxide, and carbon dioxide, then the lime reacts with silica, alumina, and iron oxides to form new crystalline compounds known as clinker minerals. mainly alite, belite, aluminate, and ferrite. the resulting material exits the kiln as hard, dark gray nodules called clinker, which are rapidly cooled to preserve their reactive structure. after cooling, the clinker is finely ground in a cement mill along with a small, precisely measured amount of gypsum, which controls the setting time by regulating the hydration of aluminate phases. the final product is an extremely fine powder with high surface area that, when mixed with water, undergoes hydration reactions forming calcium silicate hydrate and calcium hydroxide, allowing the cement to harden and gain strength by binding aggregates together in concrete or mortar!
