Hi, Welcome aboard! Two4theroads is a travel blog by us, Krishna and Kasturi. We are an Indian couple who love to explore the world and take the roads less travelled Krishna joined the merchant navy very early in life and kasturi has lived in three different countries. It’s safe to say that we both caught the travel bug very early in life and were very lucky to find each other. We have been travelling and sailing for almost 8 months a year in the last 9 years and have been to over 90 countries and all the continents except Antarctica (we plan on doing that too). We believe in the saying ‘when in rome, do as the romans’ and so we explore a destination like a local. You will find a lot of interesting trivia about local cuisine and culture in our blog. You will also find helpful tips on how to reach, local transports, affordable accomodations, homestays, what to eat and sights to see. The two of us also happen to be movie buffs and borderline bookworms and so you may find a few book and movie reviews here. From walking through international land borders to sailing across the equator, from travelling all over Europe in buses to hiking the great wall of china and machu pichu, from seeing 3 countries in a day in Asia to spending a relaxed holiday in Srilanka soaking the sun, from swimming in the cenotes of central America to playing with sealions in the Galapagos islands, from trying out snakes in Vietnam to eating guinea pigs like a local in Peru we have our fair share of stories to tell. PORTO COVO – a hidden gem in Portugal
Porto Covo is a little fishing village perched atop the cliffs along the western Alentejo Coast of Portugal. All the cottages are painted white and blue with red doors. When we asked the locals , they told us that the municipality actually pays for all houses to be white washed to maintain the unique heritage.
Located 170 kms away from Lisbon, this could be a quick relaxing and unwinding weekend getaway from the bustling city life and all your travel excursions in Portugal. We travelled by taxi from the closeby city called Sines.
The best time to visit is in the summer when there are many festivals and cultural events held in this village. The sleepy hamlet is transformed into a bustling fairground and you will find entertainment till late into the night but all the while maintaining the tranquil atmosphere. During winter, however, the village is pretty deserted and you will hardly find anyone besides the 1500 people who have made Porto Covo their home.
The village centre of Porto Covo is a beautiful cobbled square which holds the Praca Marques de Pombal and the tiny buildings around it. During the summer this almost feels like a small fairground with little stalls selling charms, bracelets, souvenirs, cotton candies and street musicians and artists performing in the evening. There is also the beautiful Church of Porto Covo in the centre, a baroque style church which is typical of the Alentejo region. We were informed by the locals that the church hosts a 3 days religious festival in August in honour of Our Lady of Solitude. Dances, concerts and traditional fireworks are the usual spectacles every year during this festival.
While roamimg through the bylanes, we came across a tiny, unassuming and un-named shop that sold some of the best handmade pottery and ceramics.
On the way to the beach, the colourful shops sell really quirky household and beach items. We picked up quite a few aluminium posters which have a very retro look. Besides that you will find a variety of dream-catchers and jewelry made from sea-shells, semi-precious stones and even fossils like ammonites!
The biggest attraction of Porto Covo is the beaches and is a paradise for all beach lovers, windsurfers and water sports during summer. Three of its famous beaches are classified under the Blue Flag Beaches of Portugal which means that these beaches include lifeguard facilities. These beaches are at the edge of the village and are surrounded by caves. Once you get to the cliffs there is a boardwalk and series of wooden stairways which will lead you through the scenic path to the beaches.
Porto covo is famous for its seafood since it’s a traditional fishing village and a small population of it’s residents are still into fishing. We loved the baked crabs, grilled octopuses and choco frito (fried cuttle fishes) accompanied by a pitcher of sangria made from local regional wine.
After dinner, we sat at the village square enjoying the soothing music played by young camp tourists who had come from all over Europe.

This is a view of Machu Picchu seen from the opposite side...the side not frequented by many tourists. . Here we can see the terraced farms of the Incas...where they grew crops for their daily needs. . Interestingly, Machu Picchu was so isolated that even the Spanish invaders who colonized almost the whole of South and Central America were unable to find it!!! 😲 . The Moray terraces in Maras, Peru. . It's so incredible that the Incas managed to create such perfect concentric terraces...and what's even more incredible that they created such an efficient drainage system that even when it rains continuously for days, this terrace 'well' does not get flooded! . The temperature difference between the top and bottom is 15 degrees and the Incas brought soil from different parts of the empire for each terrace.
