As you can imagine, the legal landscape surrounding cross boarder surrogacy arrangements is a nightmare! Once all of the papers are signed, we’ll have contracts with the surrogate mother (Thailand), the surrogacy agency (Thailand), the egg donor (USA) and the egg donor agency (USA). As a precaution, we’ve decided to get the lawyers at Jensplus juridik (in Sweden) to look over our contracts. Wish us luck!
Our options as a gay couple who want to become parents in Sweden. Just thought I’d give you a short introduction about us. First of all, we’re a same-sex couple living in Sweden and we have been together for about 12 years. We have been talking about becoming parents for a few years now but it wasn’t until recently that we truly decided to go ahead. As you might be aware, adoption in Sweden is legal for same-sex couples however, it is practically impossible due to a few different reasons. Firstly, adoption of Swedish or even Scandinavian children is very rare and secondly, intercountry adoptions to gay couples is almost impossible due to the regulations of the country where the prospective adoptive child resides. So, where does that leave us want-to-be gay parents that live in Sweden? Either, we find a lesbian couple that is willing to share custody or we go the surrogacy route. As the former was not an option for us, we have chosen to go with the latter. Thus, we hope to share our journey with you the reader and hopefully we will be able to help other couples along the way. Our journey has ultimately taken us to Thailand where we will hopefully become pregnant with the help of a Thai surrogate using an American egg donor.
