You were wild once. Donât let them tame you.
Isadora Duncan (via wnq-writers)
Scout perched on a stone wall in the courtyard, her choppy blonde fringe in her eyes as her legs swung in the breeze. Reading through her charms text book to see what trouble she could cause. The sixth year Slytherin seeking a distraction from all the news that had been plaguing the papers, being a muggleborn meant she never had to deal with any of this before; it was all a bit overwhelming. But if hiding in the Room Of Requirement for the rest of the day and practicing pranks was going to solve that, she would eventually do it. Feeling someone walk into her light, she looked up from her book. âCan I help you?â She asked with a raised eyebrow.Â
tori looked at the girl, arms akimbo. after pausing for a moment, as though expecting scout to say something else, she reached into her bag and pulled out a ragged stuffed animal--a bunny of some kind, with the head torn off. âis this your handiwork?â she asked, âi found it on my pillow this morning. mr. floofers didnât deserve to die like this,â she said, her voice flat. it had been an unfortunate surprise, as she went to take a nap in the middle of the day and found her childhood toy desecrated on her bed. after prodding her roommates for information, she couldnât come up with any explanation--so the next person to interrogate was a notorious slytherin prankster.Â
I wanna run away with someone in the middle of the night and go on adventures and see the world and eat at cheap truck stops and sit on top of our car and look at the stars and just be somewhere other than here.Â
tori fell into her usual breathing pattern during cardio--it was second-nature, by now. she always resented the idea of being a dumb jock, considering the amount of thought and energy that went into her athleticism. a cool breeze blew by, and the girl shook her head, invigorated by it.
âhey, iâll keep you to that. i was able to sneak out and have fun a few times, but a lot of the time i would make it all the way to the front door, just for caleb to be standing there and telling me to go back to bed. i have no idea how youâre such good friends with him,â tori said, rolling her eyes. she had always suspected that there was another layer to niamh and calebâs relationship (though, she had suspected the same thing about caleb and all of his female friends), but other than the occasional little sister teasing, had never really confronted either party about it.
tori was happy to spend some more time with niamh--the two had several things in common, such as their love for quidditch, rebellious streaks, and a strong sense of loyalty.
âthanks,â she said, giving the other girl a cutesy grin. âwell, weâll see about that. câmon, iâm dying to keep going,â tori said, starting to jog in place, her energy already on the rise. exercising was one of the things that brought tori the most joy, and being able to show off her athletic prowess made her even happier.
though tori would have rather had caleb looking out for her than hating her like some older siblings did, between he and their father, she could sometimes feel suffocated by their protective tendencies. granted, she felt just as protective over her brother--in the face of danger, he was always the first person who she would turn to. when caleb put his arm around her, tori gave his ribs a quick jab with her elbow, being playful. âweâre not a duo,âshe said pointedly, her smirk matching her brotherâs, âyouâre my sidekick.â
it always amazed tori how someone as mentally and emotionally strong as margaery could be so physically weak. the way that her eyes had widened when tori held her down, realizing that she was pinned--it was actually kind of hot. when it came to intellect, margaery usually had the other girl beat, especially when it came to things like strategy. she had half expected the blonde to turn around, angry at her laughing, but felt a pleasant surprise when margaery let out a laugh, her lips curving into something that seemed like a genuinely sweet smile, until it turned sour, of course. âyou know in the muggle world we have these weird things that make us not sweaty and red, they even get the dirt off of you. theyâre called showers,â tori said, rolling her eyes, âi use magic to make my life easier in a lot of ways, but if somebody knocks your wand out of your hand, youâd better have a way to defend yourself. unless you can do wandless magic, but i donât think even youâre there just yet,â she added. when margaery nudged her along, the ravenclaw decided to play with her a bit, wanting to wipe the smugness off of her face. in one swift motion, she turned around, grabbing maggieâs wrists in her hands, pinning her left one above her head and the right one by her side--not hard enough to hurt her, but enough to keep her firmly in place. âitâll take a lot more than that to wipe this smile off of my face,â tori said, raising her brow in a playful expression. she was shorter than the blonde, and looked up at her in a half-lidded gaze. she only kept maggie pinned for about two seconds, not wanting to actually frighten the girl (as if that was even possible).
âhey, youâre preaching to the choir. everybodyâs walking around like somebody died or something. i know itâs a big deal, but weâre safer here than anywhere else,â tori said, giving a little shrug. she had been navigating around morose looking students all morning--it seems that everyone had seen the reactions of those actually impacted by the news and followed suit, copying them until even the first years were looking downtrodden. the mention of boxing took toriâs mind completely off the subject, and she got a competitive fire in her eyes that scorpius would have only seen during a fierce quidditch match. âyou box? i had no idea,â she said, clasping her hands together  as she resisted the urge to throw her broom to the ground. âcâmon, letâs go. the gymâll be totally empty,â she said, turning around and beginning to trot toward the gym without even waiting for the boyâs reaction.
seeing the blonde roll her eyes gave tori a little surge of delight; sometimes it was nice to see that the girl felt anything at all, even if it was negative. maybe the ravenclaw was just a glutton for punishment--or a sucker for blondes. ever since one of their (in)famous fights in dueling club that resulted in tori pinning the other girl to ground, she had noticed a lingering energy between the two of them. with most girls, tori tried to get them to giggle or blush, though she figured it may be a long-shot with margaery. of course, it probably wasnât helping that when tori heard margaeryâs threat about throwing her off of the astronomy tower, she stopped dead in her tracks and let out a much meaner laugh than she intended. âyou? throw me from the tower? have you seen your arms? you can hardly hold up your books,â tori laughed, practically doubled over.

âoh yes, iâve certainly got nothing better to do, between homework, leading the quidditch team to victory, and embarrassing you in dueling club...â tori mused, brow raised. truth be told, talking to maggie was sort of fun--some of the fifth year girls could be so sensitive that tori had to choose her words carefully to avoid creating drama. with maggie, the two could say (or do) almost anything to each other yet neither ever took offense to it. perhaps because despite the snark, there was never really that much maliciousness behind it--for tori, at least. she rarely considered what was going through margaeryâs head. âmaybe if you didnât stomp your feet whenever you walked--itâs not stalking if i can hear you a mile away,â she chided.
tori had been in dueling club with margaery long enough to know that the other girl couldnât resist a challenge. since tori was equally competitive, the two oftentimes ended up paired against each other, each trying to outdo (or sometimes subdue) the other. though she knew that margaery would probably just walk away from doing anything embarrassing, it would be fun to rile her up just by suggesting that margaery do something like lift weights. âoh, but youâre so fun to pester,â tori whined playfully, unable to hide her smirk that her plan had worked so well. âwhat were you doing walking alone, anyway? i usually never see you without the mental ward following you.â
it was strange to see toriâs usually laid-back attitude replaced with one of concern--and genuine concern, at that. she gave a faint smile an tried to shake it off in the presence of niamh, who usually indulged her more playful attributes.
âyeah,â she laughed, shaking her head, mocking herself for being silly, âit was probably one of the ghosts or something. i guess everybodyâs mood is starting to get to me,â she said, then looked at niamhâs clothes and realized that the redhead had probably also been getting prepared to run. âi guess itâs good that i ran into you--want to run together? iâll go easy on you.â
tori took a step ahead of maggie, not realizing at first that she had tugged away from her. she turned around, brows raised at the other girl. she tried not to let it show that the slytherinâs burn was actually pretty good--it almost made her crack a smile. she paused for a second, half ready to just abandon margaery there, until she got an idea. âletâs make it interesting, then,â tori said, crossing her arms at her chest, âyou do come with me and we use our combined intellect to figure out what it was. if itâs something stupid, iâll do one thing that you want as long as it isnât some dumb blood ritual or something. and if itâs not, you have to do something for me. deal?âÂ
