I’m seeing a lot of Alec hate right now and I’m somewhat upset. I feel like many people get him entirely wrong as a character and focus too much on Clary, as in what she is and what she wants. But let’s be real for a moment, Alec has his reasons for acting the way he does. All of a sudden, there is this girl, coming out of nowhere and his parabatai, the person who should put Alec’s needs in front of his own, gets all caught up on her already before properly getting to know her. Suddenly, Jace is all over this girl, not giving a shit about the man who is more than a brother to him, treating Alec like a minion who’s supposed to risk his life for a girl several times , just by pure suspect that she might be on their side and that everything she is telling is true. Alec is the only person in this show trying to think logically. His thoughts make sense. I wouldn’t trust Clary either without knowing who exactly she was and where she suddenly came from. Then, all of a sudden, they figure that Clary is Valentine’s daughter and still, Alec is the only one with his head in the game and gets suspicious. He was right when he said she might be anything, maybe a spy, maybe really a clueless little girl. He still doesn’t trust her and it’s reasonable. And still he is willing to risk his life even more times for her, simply because his parabatai trusts Clary and because the last thing Alec would do is to let Jace down, because he loves him no matter how badly Jace treats Alec. So consider this: Alec Lightwood is the most selfless person in this entire show. Alec Lightwood has feelings. Alec Lightwood’s actions are 100% reasonable. Clary Fairchild is a stranger popping up out of the nowhere and he’s ought to risk his own life and the lives of the people he loves the most for someone he doesn’t know, Alec is not supposed to put his needs in front of hers. Yet he puts Jace’s needs in front of his own, and since Jace is a self-centered asshole, all he cares about is this little red-headed brat.
